Doc called and said with hemoglobin of 5.2 that I need a transfusion. Needless to say, I am scared to death of that option. I am worried about all the hidden things in a person's blood that might not show up until later. Has anyone here had a transfusion? Any advice? I am scheduled for this evening so hope to hear some kind of response.

I have not had a transfusion, but my hub has -- they screen the blood very carefully to make sure it is free of anything, so don't worry, hope this helps you.

Blood is screened very carefully these days as Barb says. I wouldn't be worried a jot and you will feel better immediately afterwards.
You will be fine

I didn't have time to donate my own blood for use during my hysterectomy and really didn't want a transfusion so I asked for a shot of procrit.I was given the shot a week or so prior to my surgery to boost my stores. I believe I had one after surgery. Procrit or epogen stimulates your own body's production of red blood cells. It can't hurt to ask but even this method has it's downside. Research it first.

I had one, in the early 80's during the AID's scare, and before they were testing for the virus, so I understand your concern. They DO screen the blood very carefully these days, but my concern would be about something they don't know about yet.

Can you have somebody in your family donate for you??
