Hi,
Yesterday I went to the doc's to follow up on my bp, before I left the house I checked it and it was 146/98 at doc's 155/100, sooooooo, being that we have tried just the water pill and no results he put me on
Avalide 100/12.5 ( this one has a water pill in it as well). So, this morning I was to start the med, but could only take 1/2 because I'm worried about the side effects. I asked the pharmacist about it and he said that I "might" be dizzy or lightheaded..that was enough to get me scared. I have all the "what if's" going on. What if i get dizzy, what if it lowers my blood pressure too much ? I hate being this way.
I would love to hear from any one who is taking this med and how it made them feel .
Thanks
Hugs and Love,
Moozie

I've been on Avalide for three years now, and it has been doing a good job of keeping my blood pressure under control. This after three years of trying various other drugs and combinations of drugs. The last year, with about 5% weight loss, I was able to reduce it by half, to about the dose you are taking.
My only complaint is that for the first two hours after I take it I don't plan on being far from a bathroom because of the water pill component!!
Kym
(Once I made the mistake of taking it at night because I read that BP meds are better taken at night. Well, that didn't work. Up,down, up, down)

Mooz...As a woman who has had severe hypertension for 37 years, I have been on just about every med for it. I finally found a combo which has controlled my pressure. At my last doctor visit, on Tuesday, my pressure was 116/68. Five weeks before it was 189/120 and that was with taking medication. So, I am older than you and as you get older, your arteries get stiffer with the pounding of high blood pressure. Please give the med some time. It normally takes three weeks for adjustment. You may have side effects or you may have none. I am on a heavy regimen of BP meds. I have to be as without it I would not still be here. The effects of NOT taking anything to get it under control can be devastating. High BP affects just about every organ in your body. Your dizzyness could be from your pressure being too high. Give it a try Mooz. Watch your sodium intake. If you need to lose weight, that brings BP down. Limit alcohol consumption. Exercise.. All help!

Hi CG,
I dont' drink, I need to lose about 5lbs, I weigh 120 lbs and I'm 5;5"... so I dont' think it's that. I'm not actually dizzy, I was just worried about that being a side effect. So far, I took it today and all is okay, I'm just scared of meds. I know that taking the meds is the only options, so I no choice, I'm doing it. LOL...I just have to rant my fears away

thanks for caring and taking the time to send me a note, I really appreciate it,

Hi Moozie,
I take Avalide and it has helped control my BP very well.
I was on other combinations of drugs but nothing controlled it like this one has.
I do get a little dizzy, but only if I stand up very quickly from a sitting position. Everyone is different and you may never experience this side effect.
It is a good drug and is great at controlling high BP.

Hi Arla,
I came on her this Sunday morning because i'm feeling anxious (what else is new

), anyways, I've been feeling more tired than usual on the new BP med about 2 hours after I take it I feel like I just have to lie down and total loss of energy, so then the wheels of panic start to kick in. I'm on day 4 of it and I know that it sometimes takes a few days to get used to this stuff as is did when I started taking the low dose of beta blockers that I am on for racing heart.
Has anyone else experienced feeling this way on BP meds ? So now, because I feel lousey i'm too afraid to take my blood pressure ( at home) in case it's too low ( see how crazy I am ). Why are these things happening. I always have to have something to worry about, I hate being in my head and I hate being in this body

...I just want to be normal and live a normal life. Arla, how long have you been on this medication ? I have heard good results from it, i'm on the 150/12.5 that the starting (lower) dose. I cant' imagine what the higher dose would do to me. On Tuesday, my blood pressure was 155/100 , same as at the doctor's on the same day. It would make me feel so much better to hear from you Arla.
Hugs and thank you

i'm so proud of you for biting the bullet and taking the new med! you mentioned being tired... i've been on several diff meds to try to control high b/p and they've all pretty much made me tired. this last one they started me on (a year ago) had me one the couch, sleeping most of the day for about a month, until i finally got adjusted! hang in there, you'll be ok, mooze!! just try to relax and go ahead and lay down if you need too.
i'll be thinking of you today!!

High BP is your worst enemy - I can function great when mine is as low as 100/65. I do check it at home because that was part of my "therapy", learning when to relax!!

Hi Mooze,
I take the same dose as you and yes, it did make me tired when I first started on it but I really don't notice it anymore. I have been on it for about 3 years now. I also take another beta blocker for the same reason as you, a racing heart. I am on metoprolol for that. I was hoping to wean off of beta blockers but my BP does not stay low enough to do so.
When I felt dizzy and tired I thought that my BP was too low but it was just normal or a bit below. This drug really does keep your BP in check. Try it for awhile and if you still don't feel well on it discuss it with your doctor. I was on Diovan before this and it did not agree with me at all. Hope this helps you feel a little better.

Arla.

Hi Arla,
I really appreciate your feedback. Thank you so much, I will keep on it, but I sure dont' feel that great, i feel like my ears are plugged and I seem more anxious. Of course , I looked the med up on the internet and it says it can cause anxiety/nervousness, great !!

NOT. what do I do now ?
Oh well, another day in the life of moozie.

Hi Mooz,
My Mom has battled High BP and so did my Dad.
My Mom has been on several different meds and combos, and the Ladies are describing what she goes through.
Mostly, it takes about 3 weeks for any change. A few of the meds made her lightheaded when she got out of bed, so she learned to be cautious
when rising. One made her so so so tired, but after a few weeks they added one more and it all balanced out.
She worries about taking them, too. But she gets checked by a RN with one Cuff ) to keep it uniform results,
and she's ok. It took about 6 weeks to really get it to where the BP was under control and she felt ok, too.
I hope you feel ok, AND get good results with your needed meds. I know how it stinx when you have no choice.
Love ya,
MB

Hi Mooz,
Yes, I had the plugged ears too (still do get it sometimes) but it does get better. I can appreciate not wanting to feel anxious, that was my worst peri symptom along with my racing heart!! Honestly, it took about 3-4 weeks (I know that sounds like forever on a new med) but it was worth it. Now every time I go to the doctor I'm not stressed about my BP as it's always perfect or even a bit lower. I also feel a lot better. Let me know what your next BP reading is. Most people get great results on this medication.
Hang in there.
Hugs,
Arla.

Thanks MB, that's very sweet of you to reply and try and calm me down, LOL
Arla,
Don't know what I would of done without you today

, you've been so kind , i've been really obsessing today that's for sure. I guess i'm just scared

Things in my life have been going well in the last month and I was quite shocked to see that it was that high. I think I need to start walking more , if I eat anymore salad I will turn into a rabbit, my diet has been pretty good for a long time. I think I would like to try COQ and see if that helps at all. I sure hope this Avalide helps me. Is is true that you can go off BP meds one day , if it gets better ?
Hugs MB and Arla,

New meds are scary for me. I am VERY sensitive. I always start on a TEENY DOSE. By teeny, I mean I can barely see it on the tip of my finger! That is the key, starting a small dose and seeing how it works first. At least for me.
I am using Benicar for BP. I was scared to death to try a third med. for BP, but his one is good. It is working with just a teeny bit on my finger. This is a tiny bit of a five mg. pill!!! ha.
Everyone is different so start low and add. Speak to the pharm. and doc to tell them if you do it. I don't do this with antibiotics, but it works with most all tablets. Good luck! Cut the salt also.

thanks Trudysmom,
I haven't used salt in years and years, and I watch what I eat and read every label. Must be genetic for me, what joy. I'm on day six of the Avalide, I feel very anxious still and worried. This stuff better work because I feel I cant' go through this trying another med. I see my doc next Tuesday, I hope he can tell me that my BP has come down by then, or maybe I will get brave and take it here at home and see.
Thanks for the reply,

Hi Moozie,
I have been reading your posts and I just wanted to send hugs and prayers. I have a stress test, a two week holter and an ultrasound coming up in September to see what's up with my racing heart so I am checking in here to see what is happening with everyone. The anxiety/panic is the worst isn't it! I too worry and look up side effects on a daily basis, this doesn't help I am sure but for those of us who end up being the 1% who get the side effects, what else can we do, it's not like we want to be this way!
I will be sending good vibes your way!
Blessings,
Meg
PS I have started using Bach Rescue Remedy spray and Hylands Nerve Tonic for my anxiety and it has helped me and with zero side effects, have you tried those? I read that they are safe to take with conventional medicines, and they answer email really quickly if you want to ask them about anything.

Moozie, just be careful eating out. That is the real culprit. Also spaghetti sauces etc.
If you have to try another, Benicar could be good for you. Of course, you ask you doctor. I seem to be able to take the tiny amounts fine. That is saying A LOT. I tried three before this one.
I am a worrier too. Sleepytime Tea, deep slow breathes help. You are going to be just fine. We can all give each other ideas to help.

Hi Mooze,
I'm sorry you're still feeling so anxious. I went through major anxiety with peri which led to full blown panic attacks. I'm also uptight about taking a new medications. I hope it all settles down for you and helps with your BP.
I had my racing heart checked out but nothing serious was found thank goodness. It seemed to get much better after menopause. Unfortunately my BP did not so I am still on my meds.
I know a couple of woman who actually were able to stop there BP meds after menopause. They're lucky as it seemed to only be a peri issue for them.
I also eat really well Moozie, actually I'm a vegetarian and have been for quite some time. High BP is genetic for me. Do others in your family have BP issues?
I have a BP monitor and I completely understand your apprehension of taking yours. I was always afraid that it would be sky-high and that I would die on the spot. Like you, I waited until I had a good reading at the doctor's office before I started to do mine at home.
I really hope that you start to feel better. Let us know how you make out at your next appointment.
Hugs,
Arla.

Hi Girls,
I cant' take this med, it's making me insane, I'm dry heaving in the morning, panic to the extreme all day, soar throat, coughing, my eyes are burning, indegestion, no way I can take this anymore. I'm going to see the doc in the morning. I hope I make it there and he doesnt' send me to the hospital.
I feel horrible. I'm so confused, is it anxiety ? or is it the med...I hate everything right now.

Oh Mooze,
I'm so sorry this has happened to you.
It is quite possible that it may be the medication especially the coughing.
Please let us know what the doctor says and I hope you're feeling better soon.
