I have been started on Prozac for my hot flashes. I started out at 10mg. 2 weeks ago and now am taking 30mg. It has helped but there is still room for improvement. I take 2 at night and one in the morning. Does it matter when you take them and how much is it going to take till i feel 100%

Nana,

Everyone is different and what works for some dosent for others, this may be as good as it will work for you, I dont know. As I said in another thread I was prescribed the 10mgs. of Prozac last week but have yet to take it. rolleyes.gif I always worry about anything I take for the first time, I also have liver disease so have to be careful and dont want to take anything unless I absolutely have to and Im starting to feel like it might be coming to that.
For me, if I take it and I only get 1 or 2 flashes a day ( 1 or 2 a week is preferred biggrin.gif ) thats a big improvement and I can live with that, especially if I dont get them at night.

As far as your dosage, I dont know but my neice took Prozac for a while and she said she started taking it in the morning otherwise she didnt sleep well (20 mgs ). At first they made her a little tired but then after a few days they seemed to give her more energy so morning was better for her. You need to talk to your Dr. about the dosage and maybe you should take 30 mgs. all at once?

I had a prescription for low dose of effexor last year for my flashes and took one and felt really strange, it made me groggy but then a few hours later woke me up and then I felt jittery and strange the rest of the day so never took another one and thats another reason why Im wierded out about the prozac.

Please keep us posted, I may break down and start Friday and see how it go's.

Dear 'Nana K'
It will often take up to three months to reap all the benefits of an AD.
I am not a Doctor but think hiking your dosage up so quickly is not always the best method
Yes it is great to start on a low dose then re-assess progress with Prescribing Doctor to see if and when the AD should be adjusted.
One more thing, again it is only my personal experience, there is no 100%.An AD at the right dose helps the patient to cope with life and find more enjoyment.
It is preferable to take your Prozac after breakfast as ADs may cause a raise in Anxiety as it kicks in
I repeat these are only my personal experiences.

Talk to your Doctor again and explain exactly what you are feeling
Warm Hugs

I tried the effexor also and it was terrible. It effected my vision, sleep and i really think i had more hot flashes. I was tired all the time and the sweat rolled off of me. So we now are trying prozac. I have the flashes bad. Ir is like one continuious one from morning till night. If the prozac doesn't work my next option is gabapenfin. Never heard of it and not sure what it will do but anything is worth a try for me.
Thanks again
Helen
