Hi all--

I have read a lot already on this wonderful site about hotflashes but as a newcomer to the world of hotflashes I just wanted to share my experience and ask for advice. I'm 45 and the past few months I have been getting night sweats on and off. Some nights they can wake my up every couple of hours and it takes a while to get back to sleep. What is most disturbing is that they are accompanied by a feeling of intense anxiety and either the anxiety or hormones make me have to get up and pee--often a few times one after the other. Arrgh! Does this sound familiar?

I'm on celexa and just started a low dose bcp and hope these will help. Did anyone in fact find some relief on bcps? any success stories welcome.. I have xanax but I don't like to use them unless I really really need them. Are hot flashes a sign that you are getting close to menopause itself (as I just read somewhere) or can they happen anytime in peri? Thanks so much!

There are plenty of gals that got relief from BCP. I was one of them but discontinued them because of other health issues. My hot flashes always were hand and hand with anxiety. Actually I think the hot flash triggered the anxiety because I started worrying about what possibly could be wrong with me. Give the BCP a couple of months to work unless of course you have significant side effects. I was able to come off of the AD after starting BCP but I kept my xanax on hand at all times (still do even though I don't use it). I now take biodentical progesterone and it has completely stopped my hot flash hell.

I, like davinci, have the stupid hotflashes/nightsweats too and they definitely bring on the intense anxiety for me.

Hugs to you and welcome to PS.

I don't have severe hot flashes -- I get them once in awhile, but they cannot be as bad as what you are describing, and they don't lead to feelings of anxiety.. I have not sought ways to prevent hotflashes, but I have found a palliative that helps when you do get them. Whether this would help with really really severe hotflashes, I don't know, but here goes: I really like using the facial spritzers put out by Evian and Aquafina. They are for spritzing over your makeup to help set it and refresh it throughout the day, and they are not just water but nutrients/moisturizers that help your skin also (supposedly lol). Anyway, they really do feel refreshing when you spritz them on, hotflash or no hotflash, and they are great also when you're on a plane, with all the dry air. I bought this product because of what it is actually advertised to do, but discovered the hotflash taming properties just by accident one day when I was having one and suddenly thought to spritz. There's a small 1.7 oz size that fits nicely in your purse. So maybe worth a try.

The same exact thing happens to me every night. Except I dont seem to have much anxiety ( thank God ) But thats how it happens, a hot flash wakes me up and then I have to go pee. sometimes 4-5 times a night. I take ambien at least 4 nights a week and on those nights I might get lucky and only have to get up once or twice but its rare I only get up once. the thing about the ambien for me though, is that it helps me fall back asleep quickly after getting up. I dont know how it is for you but I also have to run downstairs to the bathroom and practically do it with my eyes shut so as to try and not wake myself up to much. biggrin.gif

I pray everynight that this will all be a bad memory soon. laugh.gif

Helen--

Well now I am feeling lucky that my bathroom is at least right next to the bedroom wink.gif . I wonder if it is the anxiety or the hormones that are confusing my bladder so much.

Thank you all for your comments so far--I am so grateful as I feel alone in this. My mother says she went into menopause at 51 without so much as a hotflash, but I think I am destined for the full buffet of symptoms......

Dear sissy The night sweats are very common during the Menopausal transition. They are also very exhausting as you miss a lot of much needed sleep.
I do not know if this means you are getting close to Menopause as some ladies do continue to have the night sweats Post- Menopausal though the degree and intensity is less.
The anxiety is another common symptom and if it is too unbearable taking a small dose of Xanax, with a doctor's prescription ,can certainly help a lot.
Diagnosed.Post Menopausal at 39 was put onto the HRT immediately. It has worked for me.
I know nothing about celexa personally but have a daily dose of 20mgs of Prozac which suits me well.

So please keep coming back and sharing
It is always amazing the amount of great information I keep gaining on this Forum

Warm Wishes
