not just you, it works wonders. Just make sure you're getting enough calcium with it

I would like to ask a question here. I take magnesium (150 mgs.) before bed because it helps me sleep BUT even that small amount gives me fairly loose stools the next morning (which is not a problem in itself, but can be annoying). Is it just me, or does it effect most people this way. I'm looking at this post and wondering how anyone could take 600 mgs. of mag. and not have it effect their bowels.

I use either topical oil or caps and both do the same thing to me.

Am I just hypersensitive?
WriterMom
I take 250 MG of magnesium at bedtime, and the next morning, after I drink water, I am in the bathroom with a BM. But it's just the one time a day. I think it keeps me from getting constipated.

People have different levels of tolerance.

hi -it's me ,princessgod
I was recommmended to take ONLY 'magnesiun glycinate'. --- something to do with other magnesiums making the depression even worse and loose bowels movements. what does your bottle say? maybe you are taking the wrong one? I don't know much about this, but it is almost 12:00 noon and I don't feel one ounce of depression!! i am soooooo calm today - I can't believe it!! good luck hon!

It gives me loose stool every time as well.
You can try to take Mag taurate. I hear it causes less loosen. I've not tried it yet though.
You can also try to take a good cold source high dose probitoc with it. It's helped me with the loose stools

Yes, it is wonderful. If you have leg cramps at night (even your kids) give them calcium & Magnesium along with a cookie and glass of milk. I take 400mgs. I like the liquid form. It seems to work immediately.

I do take calcium, too. Years ago they used to give IVs of Cal. & Mag. to relax people. Now they have drugs. LOL!

Also, my dear mother-in-law told me that a bath in Epsom Salts is very relaxing. (magnesium) I haven't tried one of those for a while. If you take an Epsom Salt bath you are suppose to start out with very hot water and stay there until it cools. It is suppose to draw the toxins & etc. out of your body.

I found this post last week and have been doing a lot of research. Yesterday I purchased magnesium glycinate and took 400mg last night. I slept like a rock (although I'm still only getting 6 hours of sleep) but I'm feeling a bit calmer this morning.

I had an appointment with a new gyn yesterday. I explained how I've been feeling and the options he gave me were bcp or AD, prozac to be exact. I took the script for bcp and after a very bad meltdown yesterday I was very close to calling him for the prozac script.

From my research it says you can safely take up to 1,000mg a day of magnesium suppliments. I'm going to go with 800mg (400mg twice a day) and see what happens.

I'll let you know how it goes.

I am wondering about the 400mg dose. Maybe you could check your bottle. Is it 400 mg of magnesium glycinate or a larger amount of magnesium glycinate containing 400 mg of elementalmagnesium? My supplement has 600mg of magnesium glycinate which contains 120 mg of elemental magnesium. The bottle says to take between 1 and 3 caps/day. I am currently taking 1 in the morning and 1 at night.

Caz,

Magnesium ALWAYS gives me loose bm's. If I take mag. it's always at night because it helps me sleep, but loose stools is one of the side effects for me. Always!

Me too Many Boys!!!!

and I take the Magnesium G with D3 and Calcium Every single night for years.. I put it in water and shake it up.
I had a very weird experience with Magnesium one summer, and I always take it out of the capsule, or use liquid too, but I don't like liquid.
I have not used any meds (except antihistmaines ) for years and it is the one I think works best for anything like sleeplessness, anxiety
like job interviews, Medical procedures etc.

The weird experience - and oh my gosh I will never take the capsule again. - kind of specific and graphic - but

I was doing yard work with Hubby and got a little but of palps - our neighbors were kind of messed up people, and
They were outside. I bopped in to take some Magnesium Capsules butI was tired and rushing, and only took a few sips of water, not a
full glass. Well I came back outside and picked up the weed trimmer again.

You now those little burps that you can hide, no burp, just kind of quiet?
They hit your throat but not come out of your mouth in a noise? Well I had one of those. I kid you not Powder came out of my nose like a cloud.
Yeah I ran inside unable to even tell hubbu why and he followed me in.
The magnesium Capsule apparently did dissolve in my stomach. But I think the magensium floated on top.
It burned my sinus and throat SO bad I was in the sink with a towel over my head trying to steam it out.
it took 2 hours before I was ok. No Dr needed. Just really very unpleasant, but I break them open from now on.
The part about them helping you sleep, OH Yeah. working regular hours myself from home, and having a Hubdy that worked 18 hours from home
the last 9 years (all but 2 months of our marriage so far) - I needed help - so I would not hear him on his late night pager calls and typing and such.
Earplugs help too. But then I don't hear the alarm to get up for work lol biggrin.gif

I hope this helps - I swear by it - I just prefer the capsule shaken in water or a bit of soy Milk ( I don't like the taste of Liquid)
and it floats on top and looks sort of like chalk - so shake it GOOD.

I recently switched to a Health Food thing I will write abotu soon here - it's supposed to be awesome for Bone health and had magnesium.

Hugs,
Mary Beth

Hi - I'm new here and just read your post about magnesium. I've never been able to get past 200 mg. without it causing extremely loose stool. A friend suggested I try the glycinate form and now I'm up to 400 mg. with no loose stool effects. I know I need to keep working my way up more but I'm going slow. Just a suggestion to try another form of magnesium and that might help.

I've also been using the topical and am not having any issues with that. Good luck.

Theresa

Good morning MB,

Did you get my PM?? Did the capsules you took contain Mag D, D3 AND calcium? If so where did you get them and how many mg did you take per day? I might PM you this question too. hugs, Mich

My mom used to take a liquid called Milk of Magnesia. I thought it was for hearburn (she would take it in the evening), but maybe it was some form of magnesium. Anyone else ever heard of it? I think it was mint flavored or something. She would take a spoonfull of it and then drink a glass of water.

LOL!!!! Oh, the same thing happened to me...only I took a calcium/mag. supplement. I really wanted it to absorb, so I chewed it up. A short time later, I burped and white smoke came out of my nostrils and mouth. It just would not stop!

I thought I was possessed! However, after much thought I realized that it was the supplement talking.

LOL! I like the liquid supplement best....but I don't take a full dose unless my legs are cramping.

Too much mag. can cause loose stools. Look on your Epson Salt box. I would Adjust your dose down if you are having problems. (Yes, it is the Lab Rat theory, again....experiment on yourself.)

I remember being given that when I was a child. It was used as an antacid and a laxative.

Me too...I was taking mag with calcium and having multiple/loose a day....stopped and so did that. Asked dcotor and he said: "Milk of Magnesium is used for what?" It's a laxative and I never gave it a thought or connected it til then. I also react to meds/otcs quickly and at much lower doses than most people so I cut back....now I take it 3-4 times a week and will notice it's effects sometimes still but not as bad....

Does the magnesium glycinate cause any problem for the stomach? The citrate form has caused my stomach to act up. Natural Calm in powder helps me relax but not worth the tummy woes. Where do you find the topical form? Thanks, if anyone can help .

Hi - I was having the same issues with magnesium until a friend recommended I take mag. glycinate. Now I'm up to 400 mg. of that with no problems regarding the loose stool that I had been dealing with when I was taking the other forms of mag. I am also using topical magnesium from this company http://www.ancient-minerals.com/ I haven't had any laxative effects from it and it helps TREMENDOUSLY with muscle pain and spasm. I only wish I could use the bioidentical hormones without side effects. If anyone has any suggestions there I'd appreciate it. My hormone levels are extremely low and I'm having odd reactions to the hormones.

Hi Theresa

I have had trouble getting on the bios as well. Nothing really to suggest except starting with the tiniest of doses and work up slowly. Which bios and delivery method are you using and what kinds of reactions have you been having. Are you peri or post?
