Hi there,
I think that nasty niffs in the urine department are something that you should keep an eye on. Freshly voided urine should never be particularly smelly or unpleasant. Obviously if it hangs around it will begin to smell horrible as it undergoes decomposition in the air. We have all experienced the joys of the odour around the back stairs of a multi storey car parks! Yuk!
I think that there are two types of odour, one is changed/odd and the other is slightly foul smelling.
If the urine smell overly 'fishy' or plain horrible there is likely to be infection present. This often comes with bladder discomfort/burning when you void urine. Cystitis and kidney infection are the culprits here. The bacteria that cause these infections cause altered decomposition of the urine and can smell foul. When the infection is advanced it can actually make you gag, believe me. E Coli makes the urine stink! Wow this is a nice subject......................
Then there is changed urine smells which can be caused by many things:
Certain foods and vitamin supplements especially the B group vitamins can cause an awful pong. If a supplement other than the B group is causing a really strong odour perhaps you should consider whether you body is actually coping with the supplement you are taking.
If I eat breakfast cereals with lots of artificially added vitamins the smell of my urine changes quite alarmingly. If I choose more natural organic cereals, I have no problem. If I eat the UK brealfast cereal called Sugar Puffs, the next day my urine smells exactly like them. Ewwwwww!
Obviously metabolic problems like diabetes can cause a change in urine odour.
During hormone fluctuations I think that we get changes in gut wall permeability which can lead to the common symptoms of IBS and leaky bowel problems. This could be what you are suffering. Also have you noticed how at this time your arm pits can become very stinky out of the blue. If hormones are capable of doing that, they are also quite capable of changing the smell of the urine.
Hopefully flushing the system with lots of clear water should solve most problems. I would advise that really foul smelling urine should never be just ignored..........
