SISI
Hi,
Did any one tried these and which one make you feel better.....and how about royal jelly every body talks about, does it really give you energy ..... please give me your intake.

Thanks,

I've tried both as have a few others I know. The tryptophan seemed to be calming, but the 5HTP gave me a paradoxical reaction, causing anxiety. This happens to some people, but another woman takes it and loves it, it helps her sleep.

As for energy, they both are serotonin precursors, so they are more calming and sedating than energizing.

Thanks for the info, I actually have a bottle of 5HTP, haven't taken it cause I really haven't looked into it that much. I only try and take what I feel comfortable with. Would like to what others have tried as well....

What is Tryptophan, heard of it, but not sure what is..

Ya know they have so many things out there now, it's hard to decide. You walk into a store, and you like wow... ohmy.gif

Use as a dietary supplement
For some time, tryptophan has been available in health food stores as a dietary supplement. Many people found tryptophan to be a safe and reasonably effective sleep aid, probably due to its ability to increase brain levels of serotonin (a calming neurotransmitter when present in moderate levels)[18] and/or melatonin (a sleep-inducing hormone secreted by the pineal gland in response to darkness or low light levels).[19][20] Some users of ecstasy will eat tryptophan-containing foods to shorten the 'come down' effect of having lower levels of serotonin than usual (due to an extra large release caused by the drug).

Clinical research has shown mixed results with respect to tryptophan's effectiveness as a sleep aid, especially in normal patients[21][22][23] and for a growing variety of other conditions typically associated with low serotonin levels or activity in the brain[24] such as premenstrual dysphoric disorder [25] and seasonal affective disorder.[26][27] In particular, tryptophan has been showing considerable promise as an antidepressant alone,[28] and as an "augmenter" of antidepressant drugs.[28][29] However, the reliability of these clinical trials has been questioned.[30][31]

I have taken 5-htp for several years as needed as a sleep aid. It is a precursor to tryptophan...I have a friend whose doctor put her on 5-htp as a diet aid(helps with ocd issues) and she slept so much she fell asleep at work...he had never seen anyone do that BUT we are all different..
I have been delighted with it and have actually recommended it in her in another thread. biggrin.gif

I forgot to add you must never Never NEVER Ever take 5-htp, SamE, typtophan, St. John's Wort; or any other herbal that claims to be any sort of serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRIs)with ANY sort of precribed serotonin reuptake inhibitor(ie:paxil, prozac, celexa, lexapro, zoloft, luvox, symbyax--etc) as this would likely cause a serotinin overdose....remember if it works it is NOT benign even if it is "natural;" deadly nightshade is "natural" and the source of digitalis or just a plain old deadly poison...

The best description of L-Tryptophan and 5-HTP, how they are alike and how they are different that I've ever seen is at

I've ordered from them many times. I use the SlumberEz product - it helps me sleep but isn't the total answer.

I am so glad that you posted this as I just started taking L-tryptophan which was prescribed by my ND. The first night I took it I couldn't tell any difference the next day, then the next day I though I was feeling a bit better and after I took it the third night I had major brain fog all day yesterday until around 6:30pm. I was even afraid to drive anywhere and had a friend drive me to the Chiropractor's office as I didn't feel very secure in driving myself. Last night I took on a quarter of the usual dosage and I do feel a bit strange today but better than yesterday. I just don't know what to make of the stuff. Does this odd, foggy feeling go away eventually once your body gets used to it or what. I have had a problem with fogginess since this whole depression thing started anyway and this just put me over the edge. Any one else have this experience with L-tryptophan?
Thanks,
Bev

I've read alot of bad things about tryptophan, they even took it off the market for awhile. I just started taking 5-HTP, I'll let you know how that goes.
