I mean seriously, why can't this fat grow into my small breasts. Why the belly? And how the heck can one get rid of it?

I'm with you peacesoul.

What is with this belly fat.

I woke up with it one day. It was not there when I went to bed the night before.

I know it's hormonal, but how does one get rid of it.

I eat properly, excersize more than I ever have yet I still got it AND can't get rid of it!!!

Add me to the list girls, it seems like all of a sudden a few years ago I started putting on weight in general but especially around the middle. It's gross and jiggles like pudding. UGH!!!!! I know it's hormonally driven (stress doesn't help because it increases our cortisol levels) but I've dieted, exercised, held my gut in and done just about everything I can think of that's legal or moral and lo and behold, it's still there! I've decided that it's not going away on it's own and I don't want to look at it anymore SOOOO, today I called and made an appt. with a plastic surgeon for Thursday afternoon. I'm looking at getting a "Mommy makeover" and I'm losing this gut even if it does cost several thousand dollars. I figure my husband owes me big! LOL If we stay together, I'll look great and he can "share" in the benefits. If we split up in the end, I'll look great anyway and he'll have paid for it. laugh.gif laugh.gif

OMG Jan!!! That is HILARIOUS!!! haha!!! laugh.gif biggrin.gif Good for YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was gonna say.....the only thing that will actually work to kill the meno belly I am sure is a tummy tuck. I am pretty sure you could exercise yourself half to death and go on a rigid diet, and still the belly would be there! I didn't have one until I was over 40, I used to be so proud of that nice flat belly. But alas, those days are gone for me.
WriterMom
I read somewhere that when our body starts to produce less Estrogen, that our body wants to store what Estrogen we have (for a rainy day maybe?) and it stores it in our bellies.

I hate it too. That's where most of my weight gain has gone. I won't let anyone photograph me from the side. It's too awful. Maybe that's why the previous generation wore girdles and Spanx are so popular.

biggrin.gif Yeah, I used to have such a nice tight body back in the day. Boobs weren't REAL big, a C cup but pretty perky until I had my last child at 36. Well, after about 40 it all started to go to hell in a hand basket pretty quick. When I had my cervical disc surgery about 8 years ago I was immobile for about 13 weeks pre and post op. I gained 40 lbs. and all was lost at that point. Nothing I did made any difference. The only good thing is that my boobs went to a D cup but unfortunately it's all relative. If I had those and a tiny tummy it might look ok but alas it's all like tapioca now! dry.gif The Mommy makeover will address the tummy and the breasts as well. I've decided I can't stand the lost volume and the fact that they spend so much time looking down at my feet. I always feel like I need to paint my toenails just so my breasts have something nice to look at! I also figure I'll get my spider veins zapped while I'm asleep too, just for good measure! biggrin.gif This is all going to run about $12,000 but he owes me BIG!!!! Normally he would be commenting on the cost but amazingly he's not said anything at all. This ladies, is called striking while the iron is hot! laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

I'm pretty sure he'll give me a professional discount too which would be nice. Even if it's just a little bit, every little bit helps. I'll put it away for lasik next year! hahaha!

I sure know what you all are talking about! I recently have lost about 36 pounds. I am fairly happy with my "new" body...except my breasts have almost disappeared, AND, even with losing all this weight, I still have a somewhat rounded tummy!! Especially when I sit down...I still have those rolls! AAGH! It's not fair! No amount of exercise will totally get rid of it!! Plus, I have had 3 c-sections, which I am sure contributes to the problem!

I would love to be able to afford a tummy tuck!!

Jan,

I knew you were a kind thoughtful person from reading your posts, but to paint your toenails so your "breasts have something nice to look at" WOW that is something laugh.gif biggrin.gif laugh.gif Aaaaaah just toooooo funny.

That was the same with me, It really felt like I woke up one day and it was there. I've been a size 3 or 5 for 11 yrs and over the last few months, I'm having to buy size 7 or 9 which fits my fat belly great, but sags off my behind...hahah!

I also exercise A LOT and eat so clean (ok maybe some chocolate once and a while), but unless I starve myself, these CHUB is not moving!

Well, start thinking about how you would do it. My surgeon is charging $7,000 for the tummy tuck w/ anesthesia, etc. so that's not too bad. You can also get a loan for it through your plastic surgeon and a lot of them are interest free for up to 18 months. HMMMMM....got you thinking now, eh? biggrin.gif

Yeah, I'm getting my sense of humor back. I've laughed more in the last few days than I have in the previous month and a half. It feels good to laugh!

I'll keep you all posted on the makeover. I'm thinking September will be good for me and I can't wait. It's just too darned hot here until then to have to wear the support garments I'll need to wear. Well, let's put it this way...I've seen much larger "portions" of pudding on other women but I used to have hip bones and I want them back!!! biggrin.gif

I think I'll go down at least one pant size and probably two which would be great. I'm going to be 55 in a few months and I don't want this to look like I'm trying to be 25 again. I just don't want to look like THIS anymore. The only thing my husband has said is, "Don't do this for me". I've assured him that HE has nothing to do with this (other than paying the bill) and that I'm doing it for ME!

Oh, you all know that this will necessitate a new wardrobe because I doubt much of anything is going to fit me afterwards, both top and bottom. hahaha! I'm going to start taking care of myself from now on and he's going to be amazed at how good he had it back in the day when I put everyone else first. this time a tummy tuck, boob job and spider veins. Next time, lasik and maybe an eyebrow lift. I may never stop until I'm simply too gorgeous than he deserves. Mmwaaahhhaaa!

Really, is it necessary to bleep out the word "******" just because on occasion it is used in a negative way? Can't the censors take into consideration the context in which the word is used? It is NOT but general definition a bad or foul word and one really can see that in THIS particular context it's simply referring to the tightening of the abdominal muscles to make this woman's tummy appear flatter. What's so offensive about that????? What do we do with straws, it's not bad, just a mechanism to get the drink out of the glass. Have I made my point? Jeepers!!!

Girls - if you google Metabolic Syndrome, Adrenal Fatigue, Insulin Resistance, you'll find the ab fat right there in the list of symptoms.

I was dx'ed AF, Type II diabetes, and Syndrome X (which is a variation of Metabolic Syn) a few weeks ago. I am not gonna tell you all my belly fat probs went away because they don't. Unless it is surgically removed, I don't believe it ever goes away, but mine has lessened a little in 3 weeks. At least it's not gotten bigger tongue.gif which for a while there it was growing in leaps and bounds!

I'm doing high protein/low carb to keep blood sugar under control. Also taking something for my adrenals or cortisol level. I've lost 7 lbs - and most of it in my face and boobs alas............................

Freakin' hormones!
coastergirl
I turned 55 this winter. I've never had a weight problem, have weighed 105 pounds since high school, (I'm only 5'3"). I've exercised and played sports my entire life, so my body has always been toned.

THEN...when spring emerged....so did my little buddha belly. One morning, after pulling on my yoga pants, I pointed at it and said to hub...well crap...where did this come from??? He chuckled and said....your storing cortisol honey. I said...well how do I UNSTORE it? LOL

His answer...basically not much I can do about it....when my hormones finish balancing out....it will go away, or I could do lipo...but he said in my case......my body would very likely just build it back up again!!!! ohmy.gif How unfair is that@!

It hasn't caused me to go up a size in jeans/pants....it's just THERE...pooching out below my navel. I hate it!!
Fried
Mine is pooching out above and below my navel. I have no waist!!!!! I feel like a freakin' weeble.

Mother Nature is seriously playing with is women here ;-)

Replying to "So what's up with this belly fat?"

You are not going' like my answer. Nature plays a cruel trick on women
when we enter peri & meno.

When our Estrogen drops and is goin' on the roller coaster ride, our wonderful bodies have a way to compensate!
We start gaining weight...especially in the belly area. Fat can convert into Estrogen.

Then our adrenals and liver kicks in , too.

Why they are so nice that they steal our testosterone

to make...

Yes, you guessed it! ...ESTROGEN!

Now, without the testosterone, our bodies do not rebuild muscles very well.

Even our heart muscles get weak. That is why so many women after menopause age are having heart attacks. After the age of 65, we have the same risk as men for having a heart attack. The biggest killer of women over the age of 50 is not cancer, it’s heart disease. Google testosterone and heart health.

(Now we could discuss what changes have occurred in our food supply that contributes to declining hormones or why young men are developing breast ..hormones in meat & milk, but we shall leave that for another time. )

any way...to make a long post even longer....

Testosterone keeps us lean and strong.

Estrogen can be made by fat...and when we need more estrogen ...we just make more fat!

...unless we find a way to balance our hormones or supplement (by taking bios to replace dwindling hormones or find natural supplements?) As we age our hormone levels drop. Maybe you can get used to living without your hormones, but your body will show it. Just look at your Mom and Grandmother. Without our hormones at an optimum level, we, too, will soon have their body shape.

Oh, and if this was not enough...declining hormones messes with our thyroids! (As if we were not already a mess!)

This process also messes with our blood suger...thus...syndrome X. ...and Women lose one half pound of muscle per year, but they gain at least 1 1/2+ pounds of FAT a year if they continue at the same activity level and the same food intake. So you either supplement with hormones or stop eating and start Marathon running! LOL! The alternative is to keep on getting fatter. (unless you are one of the lucky meno ladies.)

Serotonin and endorphin levels in our Brain go down when our estrogen is low. Just look at the post here. Everyone is depressed, Moody, & etc. This is why. In peri and meno we have too little estrogen and then the next hour/day we have too much. A roller-coaster Ride from He**. That is why I am on continuous BHRT. To keep me leveled out, I need a steady stream of hormones.

Too little Estrogen = I am hungry. Then we eat Chocolate or sugar or fat or carbs (Serotonin and endorphines go up,) This makes us feel better, at least temporally. Eating wrong and shoveling in sugar rebounds and makes us depressed. The cycle continues.

I know this cycle well. For the first 2 two weeks of my cycle I could diet. I had to go under 1000 calories a day (starvation mode...and yes, I know that we are suppose to eat more in order to keep our bodies from shutting down, but believe me, if this were the case I would have lost weight long ago...yep under 1000 calories!) to lose any wight. Then the next two weeks, I would put it back on. After bios (& with Testosterone,) I was easily able to convert fat into muscles and lose weight.

However if you choose not to do bios, then you must try to find something natural to supplement with foods that contain phytoestrogens. Cut way down on your food intake, take Omega 3's and exercise.

I told you you were not going to like my answer! I don't like it either.... LOL!

LOL! I am now a bio junkie.

This comes out of the lips of a person who hates even taking an aspirin. As for going "natural, no thanks. I woke up one morning and , and it was like I was old overnight. My skin and body has changed back. My quality of life has improved, and I just don't want to revert back to what I was like before. LOL! What a case for using bios, eh? LOL!

By the way Have a nice Day! LOL! (after this post, none of us will!)

Shebee

P.S. Here is the short answer:

Fat bellies in peri & meno women
is a sign of Estrogen deficiency.

coastergirl
thank God I still have plenty of testosterone. smile.gif I have no muscle mass issues....really fast metabolism....16% body fat....blood pressure in the range of 107/65 and pulse rate in the low 60's......still love romance, face is holding up...

so I guess.....I can deal with a temporary buddha belly.....and my father's eyebrows that I'm developing.....all in all....it could be much worse. Least that's how I convince myself to look at it from a positive instead of a negative. smile.gif

LOL! I know, it is crazy! The reason that I said bottom line...fat belly = lack of estrogen
is because this is where it all starts. (The root of the problem)

Because our bodies are scrambling to makes more estrogen, we put on fat. Fat make estrogen, then we become estrogen dominant. (which causes lots of symptoms)

However, having babies and gravity does take its toll. Exercise is still a must. Lipo suction an option! LOL!

It is really about a balance of ALL hormones, especially Estrogen, Progesterone, and Testosterone. Testing is vital, to be used as a Base Guideline. Docs should treat for the symptoms (hot flashes & etc.) using a dose that is effective. Yes, it is just like a dance!

If you don't use bios, then you need to research and find something that works; is a fact that our hormones decline.

Have a great day,

So Shebee,
I've always understood that when all the hormones settle down things will be better. So, does this not apply to belly fat and estrogen? My hormones are almost none existent except for my T level at 24 which I think explains my sex crazed mind set these days. How come I can't loose this blob of fat I'm carrying around if I'm so T dominant? I'm curious!

You can...

It really is a balance of all of our hormones. Believe me...I looked like I was pg...My legs and everything else was the right size, but not my belly. It is almost non-exsistent now. I am going to get out my 80's bikini and wear it (at home in our small pool. I knew I could wear it again! ...and look pretty good.)

Hormone balance will not do everything for us. (unfortunately!!!!) Cut down on calories. Hoodia is a good supplement and chromium balances our blood sugar and helps to stop cravings. Really, when your hormones are balanced, you can eat more and not gain weight. However, if you are already a few pound overweight, then you are going to have to eat less...at least for a while. When you lose weight, then treat yourself to a wonderful dinner. (Why is it that we reward ourselves with food?????) The big problem is that we don't plan our Food Day. By the time we get hungry, we don't give a care...We want Food and want it now.

By doing a few thing different, we can cut down on calories, feel full, and drop some lbs.

Shebee Diet...

1. Cut out BREAD, SUGAR, HIGH Fructose Corn Syrup. (That about covers everything that we eat, eh?) Crummy whole wheat crackers (10 or less) are ok.

2. Eat some kind of protein for every snack, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. EAT IT FIRST.

3. Only diet Mon.-Fri. You need a few days off. (What you will find is that you will feel so guilty because you have been eating less, that you will make better choices. LOL!) However...the week ends are yours. Oh, Rule number two will still apply...Protein First!

4. Keep salad in your refrig. Make up a vegetable tray...with cheese, of course.
When you are hungry....munch....

Breakfast....protein...lots...bacon & eggs... cottage cheese???? STEAK!

Lunch....Food is your enemy...but eat anyway. Salad and Veggies...then what ever you are craving. But, please refer to Rule number 2.

Dinner...Have what you want...only be sensible. Do Protein First...Veggies...and then have that Cheese cake! (Oh, but you will feel guilty....but that's ok.)

When you are goin' crazy at night....FIRST PROTEIN...Some crummy Veggies with Good Dip...not the low calorie stuff. Water.....Wait 20 minutes ...it is another Rule

and then eat that ice cream...or that whole pie... LOL!....Shebee Promise...you will not want it. LOL! But, if you do....have some.

5. Chocolate is a MUST. I read a study that if you will use hersey's coco and mix it with water, it will help you lose weight and curb cravings. When I am craving Chocolate, I will mix some with water, ice, and stevia. It sounds yucky, but works. I also buy the bars of organic premium chocolate. In case of an emergency, I am ready!

just,
Your Shebee

My dear Jan,
Your life is in turmoil, so you might as well concentrate on YOU. I bet that you can look really hot in a very short time. ....and why shouldn't you?

Okay...had to do a search on this one....I mean after all it's CHOCOLATE we're talking about here biggrin.gif

The funny thing is the other night I was beside myself with nausea....unable to keep anything down at all...and for some reason I thought of eating chocolate. I ate a small piece of a bar with 80% cocoa and within a few minutes felt much, much better. Strange.

Anyways....here's an interesting link describing many benefits of cocoa

Okay...had to do a search on this one....I mean after all it's CHOCOLATE we're talking about here biggrin.gif

The funny thing is the other night I was beside myself with nausea....unable to keep anything down at all...and for some reason I thought of eating chocolate. I ate a small piece of a bar with 80% cocoa and within a few minutes felt much, much better. Strange.

Anyways....here's an interesting link describing many benefits of cocoa

9 reasons why you should eat dark chocolate

What a excellent post! After all, it is about Chocolate, eh? I did not realize that it contained chromium. Chromiun is in almost ALL of the weight loss supplements at the store. No wonder it curbs you appetite. I am going to have to revise my Shebee Diet. It is going to begin with Chocolate. I suspect that I should be my own guinne pig first. If I gain 200lbs, lcypt, it will be your fault, and I will be very upset! However, if I lose a few more lbs., you will be my hero, and I will dedicate my first book to you!

LOL! Shebee

A direct quote from the article on the benefits of dark chocolate.

"If you do not like dark chocolate..."

WHAT????! NOT LIKE DARK CHOCOLATE. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE???? THAT IS ABSOLUTE MADNESS! laugh.gif

Acutally, I do not crave sweets at all and the ONLY chocolate I eat is dark mostly because it's NOT sickening sweet. I don't even like sweet wine! Shebee, I note your "Shebee diet" and I have to say I've tried all those things over the years with limited or no success. Chromium made no difference whatsoever for me, not sure why but it didn't. I also have what is termed "reactive hypoglycemia" so I stay away from sweets almost exclusively unless I'm eating a good meal with lots of proteins and some fats or I'll crash within an hour. Sugar is NOT my friend. SALT on the other hand is something I absolutley LOVE so I have a problem with craving things that are salty...chips and salsa, nachos, spicy foods, etc. Popcorn was my dessert of choice for a few years and I ate a huge bowl of it several nights a week. I haven't eaten any popcorn in a couple of months and while I've lost about 7 lbs. I doubt it's due to anything but the stress I've been experiencing of late. By the way, I don't recommend this as a weight loss strategy! LOL Anyway, I would kill to find a way of losing weight that actually works for me and doesn't make my blood sugar plummet.
Have a great weekend all!
xoxo

I woke up with it one day. It was not there when I went to bed the night before.

I know it's hormonal, but how does one get rid of it.

I eat properly, excersize more than I ever have yet I still got it AND can't get rid of it!!!

I so hear you!! Just in the last 6 mths weight seems to have shifted to my middle. Hate it. Weight hasnt changed
so why is this happening now? Pants that fit then are too tight in the middle now. I eat right, exercise every day and it still there.

Hi sweet, I honestly couldn't tell you........my chinese doctor takes my pulse, looks at my eyes, checks my tongue and compares my body to an expensive foreign car "If you want it to drive like a Mercedes, you must treat it like one!!" The only thing I said to him was no shark fin and no bear or tiger or any endangered animal products. I am a conservationist and fierce advocate for the rights of animals.......Yep, he loves me cool.gif Ha!!

He then writes a script in chinese and passes it on to his wife who makes up the portions to cook at home........the thing is that I trust him implicitly which helps because I have no idea what I am putting in my gob......I only know that it works. It stinks and tastes awful, but you get past it. He also says " No mango, lychee, seafood(except fish), beef, chicken or pork(can eat lamb), brown alcohol, bean sprouts, icecream, hot or cold water(everything room temp), fruit juice, raw vegetables(lightly steamed) etc, etc.........and I pretty much stick to the diet till this day. It is quite easy to live without, but I do splurge occasionally......like he yells at me "Everything in moderation!!!" Then he smiles his face off at me........I LOVE him......

If you can find a good one, they are priceless.......accupuncture is great to for lymphatic drainage and the like......he does that as well.....

Have a search babe.......good luck! biggrin.gif

That sounds so interesting michah and I'd be into it, but have no idea where I'd start to find someone where I live. If I was downtown, it would be easy.
Glad to hear you found someone you trust. Definitely important when you're doing this kind of thing.

So, I just keep walking.....;-) And, it's not helping. I think I'm going to have to ramp up my excersize routine. I've got three excersize crazy men at home here (totally cut) and then there's me (nurse, cook and bottle washer with a big belly). I'm reminded of what a good body could look like all the time!!!

Hi Manyboys:

How long do you walk for and at what pace - it works for me - I walk every other day only for 30 mins and at 3.0 mph - maybe you are not watching what you eat - have you tried keeping a food diary? maybe after having kids its hard to lose weight - I don't have kids

Best

Hi there,

I've been walking for years. Usually I'm out for an hour but most days longer. I walk 5 days, maybe 6. I walk at a good clip to break a sweat. I think my body needs a change of pace. I can't run (unless I want to wear Depends or something along those lines.....;-), do a tough yoga class also twice a week. And, I paddle with a dragon boat team once, sometimes twice a week (not there's a workout). I think it's time to get myself a weight lifting program and start working on some upper body muscles. I'm looking into Pilates too. I'm pretty sure I know what I need to do, but this belly fat literally came out of nowhere, so it's freaked me out. I hate it. And, I haven't really gained weight anywhere else!
Part of the problem may be from Prometrium. I took it for a number of months, but have stopped and been off for around 3 months. While I was on it, I had terrible cravings for things I don't usually eat (I don't even usually have cravings except for odd things). It could be weight that I put on at this time and it just won't budge.

Yes, I have three children so my abdominals are pretty trashed, but that's not the issue.

As far as eating goes, I'm pretty good at watching my intake. And, honestly I am not prepared to and never have starved or deprived myself of anything. I believe in moderation.

Damned hormones.

So Shebee,
I've always understood that when all the hormones settle down things will be better. So, does this not apply to belly fat and estrogen? My hormones are almost none existent except for my T level at 24 which I think explains my sex crazed mind set these days. How come I can't loose this blob of fat I'm carrying around if I'm so T dominant? I'm curious!
Cheers,
Jan

Without hormone supplementation the principal source of E comes from body fat. Hence, the new meno belly. Regards, JZZ

Sheebee,

I like your truthful answer, find it well said and accurate. And, I agree with you. My own sources of research and doctors concur. Best regards, JZZ

I have that wee belly roll too... I'm resigned to not getting rid of it - never exactly had an athlete's flat tum anyway.

Since last year I've lost just over 2 stone - (about 30 lbs to you !) and the way I did it was by...

cutting out full fat anything (including cheese)
ditching mayonnaise
ditching anything sugary including chocolate (except on very special rare occasions), cakes, buns, biscuits etc.
ditching alcohol
going swimming every week - 1 hour in the pool, 60 lengths.
increasing intake of vegetables and fruit - trying for the 5 a day thing

So I've dropped 2 sizes, but the belly remains. Everything else - including my face, boobs and bum - has gone saggy. I also have "saddlebags" at the tops of my legs which won't go away at all.

Still, I'm happy - a year ago I was 2 sizes larger with very high cholesterol.
