Hi everyone, I WANT to exercise, but I can only do so much and I get so tired and feel like I'm going to die!!! Anyone else? I can do Curves, but at the end of the workout I am just exhausted! And also on the other days I do my 1 mile Leslie Sansone video, I want to do more than that, but I can't!! Is this because of all my extra weight I've put on in the last year?? I need to lose about 25 lbs. It is so hard, I have no motivation at night to eat correctly. I am fine during the day, and then blow it at night on chips or ice cream. Can someone help? Why am I so exhausted? I am 53 and in menopause.

Lisa,
This was my first indication something was not right with me. I exercised for years without problems, then several years ago suddenly I could barely get through a workout and I gained weight! I never lost a pound, really unlike me. A slow creeping on of pounds, when I had always been quite slim.

I eventually joined Curves thinking that was not quite as strenuous and I should be able to easily do it. Yet I could barely get through the workout. Women 70 years old were zipping around the circuit faster than me.

A lot more transpired, along with more symptoms but to make a long story short, last year I discovered I was hypothyroid. It took several months of tweaking my thyroid med doses, but now I can zip around the Curves circuit without a problem. Also, I increased my iron intake and that also helped.

If you do decide to get your thyroid checked let me know and I will tell you what tests need to be done and maybe even recommend a doc in your area.

Also, get your ferritin levels checked (iron storage)

Hi! I actually had a full blood workup about a month or so ago. Everything according to my doctor came back fine, and she specifically checked my iron and thyroid. So I don't know what to do. Can the tests come out wrong?? I hate this feeling. I have always been able to take weight off when I wanted to, and to get my endurance back up there, but now I can't seem to do that. I've been working out for almost three weeks now, and you would think there would be an improvement and I should be able to last longer. What to do??

Lisa,
Yes, docs frequently miss thyroid problems because they only look at one or two lab values, see that they are 'within normal limits' and pronounce you 'fine'.
However, a good doc will know that other tests must be done and that even though one's values can be in the 'normal' range, if they are in the lower or upper part that, along with obvious symptoms which scream 'hypothyroid', then a trial of thyroid meds is indicated. Can you post the actual test results along with the lab ranges?

Also, unless you had a ferritin test, you don't know for sure that you are not iron deficient, since iron levels fluctuate and ferritin is a more accurate measure of your iron status.

I don't care what your tests say, you are not 'OK' regardless of what your doc says. If you were, you would not be having these problems.

I also wanted to say that your choice of word--sluggish--is the perfect description for how I felt. Everything seemed to be an effort and I lost my motivation to do much of anything. Eventually I stopped exercising altogether, just got too sluggish and unmotivated. So of course the weight went on even faster.
