There are also natural "herbal" options that help to increase your progesterone levels...but you can do the natural E options with a small amount of P if you prefer. I would suggest starting with a tiny dose, not the recommended dose of P...IMHO... As others have suggested, P was a godsend for me too five years ago and I still use it in small doses but I can tell when my body is getting too much because my yeast overgrowth starts to act up and I have difficulty sleeping...which is why I increase my E during that time! For example, I'm in the luteal phase of my cycle now so instead of taking it once a day, the E, I take it twice a day and use the P over-the-counter cream at night.

I'm an advocate of P, I just suggest using it carefully with your eyes open to what the side effects can be....

Hello, would you mind sharing about when our luteal Phase is. I no longer have periods and have heard that some women take different amount so E and P at different times of the month depending on their cycle. I cycle in P every other month for 14 days. But I take estrogel continuously--1/2 push of the pump (instead of a full push) 24/7. I AM SO CONFUSED ABOUT THE DIFFERENT PHASES OF OUR CYCLE AND WHEN TO INCREASE OR DECREASE THE ESTROGEN--WOULD YOU BE WILL TO EXPLAIN THIS TO ALL OF US WHO DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO THIS. THANKS AVALINA

Hi Avalina,

You do not have a luteal phase anymore because you are in Post Meno. So, following your docs advice, is to cycle in the P every onther month for 14 days. Just pick the same 14 days, Maybe mark a calendar so you don't forget. If you don't feel when during the time of using the P, then you can actually increase the E inorder to decrease some of the P side effects. (ie - use the full dose instead of the 1/2 pump of E). It is the rise, and subsequent drop of the P that might cause a withdrawal bleed. Bleed isn't important but goal is to get enough P onboard inorder to protect the uterine lining.

Some women who no longer menustrate do not have a luteal phase. However, other women continue to ovulate resulting in a slight discharge which can signal the beginning of this phase. Additionally, you can take your temperature every morning via the armpit (basal body temperature when completely at rest...first thing in a.m.) area to see how your temperature changes. My body temperature goes up at the beginning of ovulation and I have the discharge, so although my periods are further apart, that is the beginning of the luteal phase for me.

Also, in some women external sources of hormones can deplete the B Vitamins quickly so you may want to add a good B complex, Countrylife or Jarrow has good ones, and a good B12 Jarrow is a great one! The B Vitamins, including Zinc and Folic Acid help to PRODUCE hormones in the body....thyroid, female hormones, etc. B12 in particular, can have a HUGE impact on your cycle and HORMONE PRODUCTION! However, taking one of the B's without the others, can cause an imbalance in the other...sound familiar!

Finally, the path that progesterone takes in ones body depends on the person's current hormonal state. Excess progesterone in me turns directly into cortisol which does result in panic attacks, psychosis, anxiety, insomnia, etc.

Best of luck!

I am glad to see this has been brought back from earlier this year. Progesterone is not for everyone. It made my depression so very much worse as well as the detached feeling. I will never understand why some of us can take it and benefit from it and others simply cannot. Maybe it makes the E lower and in my case, I do not need the E any lower. I always tell myself that it is for gestation of a fetus... (pro-gestation) and at this age we no longer need it for that, so then I just get confused why we would need it!!! If we take the E, then we do need this to protect the uterus, but I wonder why we would need it by itself. Anyway, I think this is a great article and if you are on P and start to have some really weird side effects, that could be the reason.

Also, I do seem to remember that it affects the GABA receptors in the brain similar to a benzo and I cannot tolerate them either.... (central nervous system depressants)... some women can take these fine, but I cannot. The depression is so much worse and I cannot function for anything!!!

So for those of you able to tolerate the P and doing great on it, I am happy for you, but it is poison for me!
