My doctor prescribed me 200 mg. of prometrium to take for the next 3 months 14 days on and 14 days off to make sure that the hyperplasia doesn't return. Is this the normal dosage prescribed for this? Is it better to start with the 100 mgs. and see how I do or will I be okay on the 200 mg.? Anyone else experience this?

Hi Sunnylou,

Have you ever used a progesterone before? I have used prometrium, at 100mg and I took it before bedtime. It can make you sleepy and for some of us, it can make you feel groggy in the morning. I usually will feel this after being on it for a few days, it catches up with me. I would probably start at 100mg each night and see how you do, if all is well, then add the other pill. I don't know if I could take it during the day? It may or may not make you feel tired, I guess ask your doctor how he wants you to take it. But I would go easy at first to see how you do in the first week. Just MHO, good luck!

200 mg is standard dose for hyperplasia, although you need to see how your body reacts, but if it is used in theraupetic dose, 200 mg is normal.
You will never know how your body will react, try before bedtime, it surely helps with sleep, but in the morning you may be groggy.

How did things turn out? I may be facing this same dilemma and I am worried about side effects. I know it is only 3 months, but still nervous about it. Did it work for you?

I did the prometrium the first month and it gave me a few weird side effects, (no smell or taste, cramps) so my doctor actually switched me to a compounded vaginal progesterone (40 mgs.) and I just finished up my two weeks of that. I have one more month to go and then I will have to have another endometrial biopsy to make sure the hyperplasia has not returned and then go from there. I have found that the first few days starting the progesterone are a little rough with anxiety and nausea as the main complaints. And I just finished my last dose last night and the last couple of days I have had hot flashes and night sweats, headache and the anxiety and nausea is creeping back in. My period last month was real light so we will see what this month brings. let me Know what you find out.

Thanks sunnlou. It is all very worrisome. I am waiting for the results of the biopsy and then I guess I have to take it from there. I am NOt looking forward to the next biopsy, but I will ask to be perscribed a pain med and a valium before I have it done. the pain was God awful.
