Hi everyone,
If my hot flashes and night sweats get any worse, I will have to try to find something natural to take. I just cannot take the BHRT or the HRT nor do I want to start on ADs even though my depression is becoming debilitating.

There are so many things I cannot take due to this thyroid issue. Has anyone heard if you can take plant estrogens such as black cohosh or red clover, etc. if you have hypothyroidism? I have read where you are not supposed to consume soy, so I gave up my soymilk in my cereal and that is about the time the sweating started up with the hot flashes. (I am having about 20 or so during the day and about 4 or so in the night waking me up out of a deep sleep.)

I have some Remifemin here and want to take it but just do not know if I can or not .... I took it last year when I thought I was finished w/ periods and was flashing and lo and behold, it made me start up my periods again. This is one thing I definitely do not want! I guess all this health anxiety just has caused me to be SCARED of everything, synthetic or natural.

Thanks,

Hey I hear ya when it comes to what to take, and what not to take. I think it would be okay, but honestly I am not sure. Try doing a goggle search, sorry I so wish I could help more....

Just know that i get the same thing, when it comes taking stuff, want to make sure it aint going to hurt me. If you are not sure, don't take it until you have proof it is okay, cuz you know if it turns out to be okay.... If you take it before you know for sure, you will drive yourself crazy, I know I would.

Hopefully someone will answer that knows a little more about that... Good Luck...

so glad you asked this question! I have been hypothyroid for 33 years now..i'm on levoxyl .15 every day. when i entered peri I asked my dr and he said it was fine to take black cohash and some other herbs, like rosehips etc...

WELL....I had been within normal limits (euthroid ) on my meds for the past 10 years...no problem...TSH was always around 2.2 or so. Within four months of taking these herbs with some others to help peri, I started to gain more weight, got very puffy, low hourse voice etc...sure enough...the herbs BLOCKED the levoxyl from getting to my thyroid to help me and I had gone HYPO thyroid again....

SO Much so that my TSH, which is supposed to be under 5.0 and had been for years, shot up to 108 , that 's NOT a typo...108!! I was so Hypothyroid....so I had to stop all my wonderful herbs that helped with anxiety adn hotflashes and within 3 months my tsh was back down and I was losing weight and all my other symptoms of hypothyroidism..

have to live with the hot flashes anxiety etc...can'[t take anything..even any SOY products interfere with your thyroid...so be very careful and sometimes even the drs. don't know everything...my endochronologist learned a big lesson with me and peri and herbs!!

Hope this helps

I do believe that many of the herbs and soy products that have estrogenic properties also can interfere with thyroid function. Many phytoestrogens also seem to have goitrogenic properties. Nurselisa's experience is a good example.

Thanks Lisa,
I am so sorry that this happened to you! Last year when I took the Remifemin (black cohosh) for a little while, all my hypo symptoms were SO much worse and I gained weight, etc. Little did I know that I was just binding the Synthroid thyroid med. I guess that is what was happening and I did not know it. When I stopped the Remifemin, my TSH went way down. Seems like when our estrogen is the highest, the thyroid hormone is the lowest and vice versa. I just know that on all my labs, when the FSH is high, the TSH is low and vice versa. Guess I will just have to put up with these flashes and just wait it out! This is so frustrating, isn't it!

Thanks so much for replying and sharing your experience and glad your thyroid is better now.

I have not done well with herbs and my thyroid or hormones. I just had a terrible time with licorce root. It raised my blood pressure.
