Hello everyone,

I guess this might be my first post....although I've been lurking for a long time.

I was wondering if anyone has experienced odd facial swelling? The last couple of weeks I've woken up occasionally with swelling in one place or another on my face. Once it was one cheek, or my chin, or a lip....last night i was up late, and actually felt this sudden surge of swelling in my upper lip, right side only. It got huge! I iced it, went to sleep and when I lay down i could feel the swelling move across my lip, following gravity, and spread out to the whole upper lip. It's freaky! This morning it's still swollen, and I look really weird. :( If it follows the pattern, it should be gone later today, but it's very annoying.

At first I equated this with certain foods I'd eaten, b/c my mom gets something similar, and has through all her meno years, and she associates it with eating anything with preservatives in it, esp MSG. And sometimes too much salt. And so far, every time it's happened, I've been able to think of something I ate late in the day which might have been a cause. But this time, it was just my own homemade taco soup, which MAY have been on the salty side, but nothing noticeable (and I'm not big on salty foods, so I would have noticed if it was oversalted).

Anyway, I haven't found any info on this yet here on the forums, so I thought I'd ask.

thanks for any info :)

Hi there and welcome smile.gif

I have never heard of this a symptom of menopause. It sounds as though you have an allergy to something. Maybe you could ask for an allergy testing from your doctor?

Hope someone else comes along who might be of more help anyway.

That was my first thought....an allergic reaction to something. These can be hard to track down sometimes. It could be air freshener, but more likely a food. Sometimes you can develop an allergy to something that you were have been eating all of your life. Next time it happens...take a benadryl. If it stops the reaction, then you can start tracking it down.

Also...when I take certain anti-biotics, I have had my face swell...puffy with water underneath. It was horrible! I could actually move the water around in my tissues. I stopped taking it and my face went back to normal.

kiki,

The same thing happened to me just a few weeks ago. I woke up with my face all swollen and feeling very strange for several days, then my feet and ankles started swelling too. I had been having shortness of breath for sometime, so this really scared me. Was put through all kinds of tests. Everything was fine. I was in the process of moving, so thought maybe the fact that I had to eat on the run had caused it, but I really have no idea. The swelling is gone for the most part and I am no closer to knowing why, than I was then. I don't touch my salt shaker. Didn't even know where it was at the time, so I don't think that was it, but who knows. Let me know if you come up with an answer. I'm just as perplexed as you are. Sorry I couldn't help.
