What a night! I was awaken again and again with a startle....then those awful adrenal surges! They just kept coming and coming.....I felt like I was trapped. My mind said to get up and take a xanax but I couldn't move or maybe I just kept falling back to sleep. I just hate these and why I get them at night I just don't understand. I drive myself crazy trying to figure out why my body does the things it does. Have any of you ladies that experience these figured it out? I could just feel the wave of "rush" come over me.....like the "fight or flight" feeling you get. I feel like a truck hit me today....spacey....body hurts and I felt like I was going to have a panic attack. I took a xanax and feel much better.... My hormones are doing something! I had two periods last month and so far nothing this month......

When I get these I tend to be fearful to go to sleep......does anyone out there struggle with these?

I so understand those long scary nights because I went through them big time. I had nights when I would fall asleep and jump awake with adrenaline surges. I had nights when I would have hot sweat after hot sweat, and nights when I would just lie awake so depressed, I couldn't sleep and just wished I could die.
Yes in the end I was fearful to go to bed. I used to get up and go to a spare bedroom so I wouldn't disturb my hubby, and lie there hour on hour in depression and terror.

Maybe you could ask your doctor for some sleeping pills? You need oblivion for a few hours so you wont be afraid of waking suddenly with those surges.

I can just reassure you that I am three years post-I had a TAH/BSO -and no HRT in all that time-and now I sleep fine. I do get the odd adrenaline surge on morning waking but that is all.

It is an unpleasant part of peri but completely normal I am afraid ohmy.gif

The good news is that it will pass so hold on-you will be fine smile.gif

Excellent advice Janet.

I wonder why we suffer so much at night time?

I grew to dread having to climb those stairs and go to bed.
I am 2 years post and I can confirm that it does get better but it is a slooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow process. I have fond memories of when I was younger. I would go up to bed fulfilled and tired. After reading for a short while I would drift away gently and the next thing I knew about, was the alarm for getting up the next day.

Why did going to bed and trying to sleep become such a darned issue. blink.gif I blame it on changes in the endocrine system!

I get those same surges. I thought it was just anxiety (even though I didn't feel anxious...although the surges BRING ON anxiety!!) but now I'm thinking it's my hormones! Thing is I'm only 30. I keep reading trying to find people my age with similar issues.

Please look under my post under insomnia "klonopin not working". I have been getting the same thing. And the more you get it, the more you get it. Because you start dreading sleep which causes the anxiety and it's a vicious cylce. Hope one day we will sleep like we used to and look forward to sleep. At least I would have an escape from the anxiety when I would be sleeping. NOw I have no escape. Sometimes I lay down in the daytime and can finally drift off peacefully. I guess there is no pressure. For some reason night time has been a scary time for me. But at least you know you're not alone.

Adrenaline surge ladies:

I think I learned sometime ago, at the beginning of this journey, that in the absence (sp?) of estrogen our adrenals make cortisol for some stupid reason. Those of us with surges (sheeeeeeeesh me included happy.gif ) are making too much cortisol. I have many times been stuck in that state between awake and asleep, having had surge after surge, when you just can't get up and take something because you are almost "between worlds".

Is that what you mean Oars?

Best in misery.

Hey Andrea,

I'm 30 also, and I understand! I have been going through alot of hormone stuff for about 2 1/2 years now. Anxiety/panic, internal shaking, night sweats, general not feeling well, and the surges. It's a bizarre thing. My doctor has done several tests on me and nothing. But she has reassured that just because they can't find anything doesn't mean that it's not there it's just not showing up that day. She is a wonderful doctor!! So just hang in there, consider going and getting your thyroid and hormones tested, you never know they might find something and if not it probably is just hormone related. No matter what a doctor says we are NOT TO YOUNG to be going through this. Not everyone is a cookie cutter image of what the medical world thinks is "normal". I hope things have been better for and keep coming back here, there is a wonderful group of ladies here to support, help and offer advice.

Take Care,
Jenigirl
