Ok well today is the 3rd I have been on YAZ and I don,t feel so well. Oddly enough the very first day I took it it knocked out all the anxiety and made me feel just kinda flat but gave me hard beating palpitations and a slight headache which has lasted for 3 days. well, by today I just feel sad.All the irritability and anxiety is gone but I am pretty sad and I dont like this feeling.I fealt the exact same way when I started using progesterone cream so I stopped.Could it have that much of an effect after only 3 days ?
The Dospirenone (progestin) is 3 MG and the estradiol is 0.02 MG so that seems likea really high progestin to estrogen ratio and maybe thats why I feel yucky... ??? any of you ladies have any thoughts ? Would love to hear them. I'm debating on just throwing them away and stopping today....

Why are you taking Yaz? Are you menopausal? How old are you? The reason I ask is that my doctor told me taking birth control pills during this stage is dangerous because it's much stronger levels of the synthetic hormones.

well I will be 32 in June, and I had a tubal 10 years ago.I have crazy cycles which used to be like clock work every 28 days and I have almost every dang peri symptom it has been this way for about a year.My labs came back with an elevated testosterone level and my PMS is terrible , this month I cycled twice. So my gyno gave me 3 months free of YAZ and I just dont feel well at all.

t - as indicated elsewhere, we all have such different reactions to any of these bcps, meds, etc. i do want to share my particular experience on yaz with you. i only lasted around 5 days. i call it my near psychotic flu incident. the 1st day i felt ok - kind of nauseous, tender breasts, no appetite, etc. then it swung into many different symptoms, including 1 day of severe hot/cold flashing & joint/muscle aches. another day i awoke & cried for around 4hours for no reason. i kept calling my ob/gyn's office about the breadth & severity of symptoms that i was experiencing & the nurse would call back & tell me that it was absolutely impossible that any of that was due to the bcp. finally, on the last day, i descended into a truly awful state - abject despair, excruciating painful reaction to all stimuli -light/sound,etc, disassociation from my body. i was nearly suicidal by that evening - i basically spent it rocking in a corner, covered by a blanket - trying to block out sensations, & telling myself that this would all pass & to just hang on. i stopped taking yaz at that point & returned to a better state the next day.
when i later talked to my then ob/gyn about it, she just shrugged & said that she had never heard of that type of reaction & said that maybe it was due to the synthetic progestin.
i share this not to scare you, but to provide an example of big effects in a short time frame - all of which were continuously discounted by the health providers. it may well be that somewhere down the road, i may find that i have something else going on that could have helped to provoke such a response (so far, all else has checked out fine). what i have continuously learned on this journey thus far is how little we (including the health/science community) truly know about this complicated & far reaching process. trust yourself & your instincts as you go on, even as you gain support & info here & elsewhere. some women have been able to tolerate initial side-effects & do better later. some, like myself, simply cannot.
whatever happens, best of luck to you.
hugs, ellen

geez, t, just seeing this now - so sorry that you're dealing with such cruddy symptoms at such a young age. i have read that yaz is often used for the high testosterone/pms symptoms combo, but again, there are obviously large variations in what works for each person. i know that there are websites about yaz - mostly used by those who have had problems with it & have had it prescribed because they had conditions like pcos & pmdd. in your case, the challenge is finding something that will provide treatment relief. i wonder if elizabeth vliet's books/website would be a helpful resource at all? though i think i recall that she talks about the use of yaz in circumstances like your own. but i do know that she recognizes that women react in vastly different fashions to bcps & may have recommendations as to how to find a combo that works.
good luck.

I hate it when doctors come out with this reasoning. It's like we're freaks or something!

I'm not a doctor, but if you're body is telling you it doesn't feel well I would listen.
There must be other options for you. If your doctor is taking a "beats me" attitude, it might be time to look for someone more enlightened.
Good luck to you!

i've gotten so many responses like that from doctors that you really do start to think that you are the freak. & maybe you really do need that psychiatrist. that particular episode was a turning point for me, i think. & that doctor was a menopause 'expert' who also proclaimed me too young to be peri. needless to say, she is no longer my doctor.

So very sorry you had a bad reaction to YAZ. Vliets books (and I think Redmonds) address finding a bcp for each particular womans physiology. Glad that you listened to your body and discontinued promptly. As long as the Yaz was the only new thing introduced into your system then you are able to pinpoint the cause. I too am sick of docs not listening to women and acting like we are all some type of oddities. I have had a lifelong bad reaction to even tiny doses of meds and was ignored. Recently I had some specialized bloodwork testing that proved my liver has an enyme pathway defect (don't clear or convert many meds). FINALLY, the Docs have to listen. Do what works for your body. Best Wishes, JZZ

Forgot to mention above: Have you checked out the earlymenopause site for any other suggestions regarding peri/meno? They are also a great resource. Hang in there. JZZ

It's earlymenopause.com. Might be helpful. Although it's an under 45 only crowd they talk about hormones and other health issues associated with early peri/meno. Hope it's helpful in some way. JZZ

With elevated Testosterone did your doctor ever mention the possibility of pcos? You get all the lovely symptoms that are very close to peri symptoms. I had very very very high T and it is now normal after only 8 weeks on just biodentical P. We did however rule out PCOS first.

Yeah she kind of did but said It is best treated with diet and excercise but can that just happen at any age, can PCOS just happen in your 30,s ?

I suppose pcos can happen at anytime. One of the main ways of treating it is with metformin the diabetic drug. My doctor takes everything one step at a time. The first step after the blood work was having an ultrasound to check out the ovaries for cysts. I did have a few small ones but it was inconclusive for PCOS. So we then just waited 8 weeks to see if the P lowered my T and it just happened to work in my case thank goodness. I also do a low sugar intake diet which maybe helps? I really think you need to push and question your doctor more or find a new one. BCP isn't always the answer.
