Hi all -

Two years ago I contracted the H-Pyloru stomach bug and prescibed the triple therapy by my GP. I took a proton-pump inhibitor, Clarythromycin and Metronidazole. I struggled but I managed okay. Two months ago, my dentist prescribed Metronidazole for an infected root canal - I took it for 4 days and had a horrible reaction to it. I dont know why I reacted so badly since I had very little problems before. A few days ago I was prescribed Erythromycin and after 2 days I couldn't continue because the side effects were just too much to deal with. I had a headache from hell, tiredness, terible stomach cramps and dry heaves, shooting pains everywhere, especially in my back and a horrible faintng feeling. I called my doctor who told me to stop taking them straight away. I told him I dont want anymore antibiotics as I feel I've become very sensitive to them for some reason and he agreed. I was just wondering if anyone else is having this problem? I am feeling like I have the flu right now, coupled with an enormous hangover!

Thanks!

Make no mistake these antibiotics can be very nasty on the system. It sounds as if you became sensitive to Metronidazole 2 years ago. Erythromycin is a horrible antibiotic. it is rarely the drug of choice because it is not nice on the system but is mainly used when you show sensitivity to the front line antibiotics. These antibiotics are good for dental or anaerobic infections. Are you taking other medications? Erythromycin is a devil for altering the pharmacokinetics of other drugs. What have the antibiotics been prescribed for this time?

I have a root canal that keeps flaring up everytime I menstruate, as silly as that sounds. Unbelievable isn't it? The dentist is hoping it will settle down but I'm getting pretty fed up. I have a new appointment with another dentist on the 8th June - but have to go private because there is a shortage of NHS dentists around here. I took Ibruprofen and the odd Paracetamol with the Erythromycin but thats about it. I feel so crappy sad.gif

I forgot to mention, I'm allergic to Penicillen -- i took it for a childhood illness - can't remember what for exactly - I was only 9 years old.

You poor thing. Dental pain is the pits. I had a root canal problem just as I came to menopause. I had surgery which cost a fortune but it was well worth it. I have been pain free since the work was done.
I think that you need to make sure that your obvious sensitivity to Metronidazole and Clarythromycin is well documented in your notes. Remember that Clarythromycin is a derivative of Erythromycin. You might react rather badly if you take it again.

There are other antibiotics for you to try as long as you do not have a sensitivity to penicillin.

I think that it will take you several days to feel better. Plenty of clear fluids will help.

My thoughts are with you..........

I'm allergic to Penicillen so I might be running out of options. I'll be very reluctant to take another antibiotic - thats how I feel at the moment anyway.

Thanks for your support XIII - I know you come from a pharmaceutical background - always useful on this board - rolleyes.gif

I hope you're still doing well! wub.gif

EP, I just hate this for you! Isn't the infection enough to have to deal with, without dealing with the side effects of the meds? I'm having the gastro problems while on antibiotics for the H Pylori bacteria, but I haven't had the headaches. Maybe because I'm sleeping all the time?

I hope you get well soon! This can be a total nightmare time of life to have to deal with everything dumped on ya all at once!!

In the last few years I've had allergic reactions ( hives, rash, etc.) to several antibiotics that I've been able to take in the past. So they're now on my list of no-nos.

However, I still can take other antibiotics without experience side effects.

Aww, thanks Bev. I'm sorry you're having the gastro problems - but that could also be due to the stomach bug sad.gif I hope you dont have the headaches- not fun --- hopefully, you will get better soon! As I mentioned before, the H-Pylori can make you very sick -- I think you'll feel loads better when it's cured. It can all be so overwheling this time of life--- I'm nearly ready for the funny farm mellow.gif

Thanks for your post. I'm not the only one who has a reaction to ABs then? If you dont mind me asking, how do you deal with an infection?

Hi EP...I feel so bad for you!! (((((EP)))))...I started having bad reactions to antibiotics when I started into peri. Before then I could take any antibiotic. I am no bio-chemist but it does seem a coincidence that when our hormone levels are all over the map, many of us can no longer take or do whatever we were doing before peri. I have not been able to tolerate an antibiotic for many years. I have myself on a good probiotic and a vitamin supplement. It took about 6 months for me to build up my immune system. To me, that's the key;the immune system.

I hope you get things straightened out soon. Prayers and positive vibes coming your way!

Hugs,
CG
