Hi there,

This is not really a peri thing but can the symptoms can be exacerbated by this. I have peri and was dx with OBV yesterday by my Doc. I have had ear problems for about 4 years. I though it was the hormones making me lose my balance or muscle fatigue due to the thyroid side effects of "euthyroid" goiter. But no......some of things were due to severe damage to my inner ear from a stint of intravenous antibiotics in hospital for MRSA a few years ago. I have terrible symptoms from this. I feel unsafe walking outside, I have fallen over a couple of times and really hurt myself, I have pain, motion sickness and vertigo. Now i have an answer. Not saying that this is for everybody, but I know some people really suffer with ear problems........get a hearing check and balance check. I wish my old dr had listened to me more and not put it down to having "dirty" ears or "anxiety". I might not have had to live with not knowing what was wrong with my ears or my hearing for 4 years.

here is a link babes......

Have a good one....... biggrin.gif

Micah:

I am very glad that you got answers for yourself. I hate it that you are suffering from this. Will you be able to be treated for this? If so, I hope it comes quickly for you.

Hugs to you,
Jeaninne

Thanks girls!!

Unfortunately, there is no cure for this.......my Doc is a bit concerned because after 4 years it should be getting better, not worse. Its an indication of permanent damage, the little vestibular hairs will not grow back. But I reckon I will see my chiropractor( who is also a naturopath) and maybe talk about a course of acupuncture.......might help. Unfortunately the symptoms are debilitating at the moment and all I can really do is take stemetil for the motion sickness. I also have to do things more slowly(which does not suit my brain!!). Eventually, with rehabilitation exercises, you can train your eyes to be your "ears' without the mental fatigue associated with the concentration of standing upright. If my eyes work, I can balance in other words......but man, it is tiring!!

Pretty horrible for someone who was a ballerina for many years and has always prided herself on having good balance!!! Might have to hold off on the Yoga!!!! biggrin.gif

Michah, So sorry you're dealing with this. Thanks for posting the article. I developed tinnitus after a toxic level exposure of Antibiotics several years ago. It varies in intensity and I've learned to deal with it. But, you're article pointed out limiting simple drugs such as aspirin and ibuprohen due to their impact on the ears. Although my problem is differente from yours I appreciate any advice that can keep myself healthy. Hope things improve for you. Regards, JZZ

Hi JZZ, yep, I hear you. Thanks for telling me that you are learning to deal with it......I mean I have been living with it for 4 years so I guess it is no different now that I know......but I have done some silly things!! I used to fall into things at work, trip over for no reason and hurt myself. I swear everyone at work thought i was drunk!! And Ibuprofen plus codeine is the only thing that helps with period pain. Otherwise I have to take panadeine forte or Tramadol which are bad for the liver and for some reason with me they don'rt work as well. So I don't know what I am going to do with that.....

Anyway, it will get easier......thanks!! biggrin.gif

Michah, Codeine (or any of the morphine derivatives and many many other drugs) are also called "pro drugs". The liver needs to be able to convert a pro drug into the "active" form.....hence (pain relief) as in the case of the morphine family of drugs. My liver lacks a major enzymatic pathway and cannot clear OR convert many drugs. I cannot use morphine but you can. Listen to your body!!! The reason you can't tolerate the other 2 drugs may be a liver clearance and/or conversion issue. Or maybe you need a dosage adjustment.

I almost died 2 years ago from being an incorrect dose of Medication while in the hospital and no one could figure out why. Finally, I had some fairly specialized testing done and we discovered my genetic liver enzyme problem. My entire life I had problems with even tiny amounts of meds and couldn't take them. Now, FINALLY the docs listen to me because I have the test results to back it up with. I get so tired of hearing docs and people say to "just keep taking a med or supplement and their body will adjust." Not always. And the result can be toxic and or life altering. Sorry, I am rambling and an NOT trying to scare you. I just want everyone to make an informed decision and do what works best for their own body.

As one of my favorite docs used to say: "just because something hasn't been studied doesn't mean it doesn't exist (happen)." My liver enzyme problem was very real and no one would listen. Unfortunately it took a major error And a fairly new blood test to PROVE that my lifelong bad reactions to meds was a not to be ignored part of my own physiology.

Feel free to pm me if I can be of help. Best wishes, JZZ

Hi Michah,
Sorry you are having to deal with this. I was diagnosed with Menieres Disease over 20 years ago and still have bouts of dizziness from time to time. I lost hearing in one ear, have constant tinnitus. I have to say that even with being unsteady sometimes it has gotten better over the years. Like you said, your eyes compensate for your loss of balance and somehow you just get through it. I have found that there are still certain times or conditions when I cant function properly. I sometimes cant deal with flourescent lighting such as in a big store, busy patterns on carpet or wall paper, things on tv screen moving too fast, AND I hate when it is too noisey....causes an inability to focus. SO believe me when I say I TOTALLY understand where you are! When mine flares up it causes major anxiety and I'm usually down for a couple of days. The doctor that I saw at the House Ear clinic in LA said that xanax is prescribed because it is a vestibular suppressant. I only take it during a flare up and it has always helped me.

Here's wishing you days to come without dizziness!
