Hi. My latest symptom after a trial of BHRT (which I had to discontinue) is terrible tingling and numbness in my hands and feet. ALL the time. Not to mention that huge veins have popped up and surfaced on both my hands and feet that look terrible. It is as though it seems the blood is "pooling" up there and not making it to my fingers and toes.

While I was on my short trial of BHRT, I noticed my feet began to tingle every morning when I got up, then it continued to get worse, then one day when I really got stressed out about something, my feet and legs totally went numb and I could barely feel them to walk. It scared me to death and then I went into a panic attack and the panic attack just made the numbness worse. I discontinued the BHRT right then and there.

I tried to call my dr., but she never returned my calls. Anyone heard of Raynaurd's syndrome (don't know if I spelled it right).... a friend told me it sounds like that.

I also have Hashimoto's thyroiditis, made worse here a meno, so don't know if this is from that or not. I am SO scared I will have this forever. It is so painful and just adds to something else to worry about. All these symptoms are about to drive me crazy. I do not know what is serious and what is just hormonal. Sometimes I feel I cannot cope anymore.

Does this tingling and numbness go away after postmeno? How in the world does hormones cause this???? Does it have something to do w/ the adrenals?

Thanks for any replies.

Yes, I absolutely have this. I also have Hashimotos, and my t4 is off right now(had bloodwork done). I am in the process of upping my dose and the numbness and tingling are getting better. It also happens with the fibromylagia. It's all related.

This is a symptom of mine as well.On the weekend I had it in my feet and sometimes up my calf,I stood up and my toe went numb.It freaked me out,but when I looked back in my diary I saw I have had bouts of it before.Sometimes in hands ,feet even the back of my head but they passed. They say tingling can be a pre-hot flash thing.I do get it in my feet in the morning lately but it seams better today and I've had so many symptoms that I've worried about then they change so I'm working on my iron and B 12 which can also cause tingling and give it some time.I remember once having tingling in my face with numbness I thought for sure it was a stroke but that was a year ago and amazingly I'm still standing.Do you think it could be this formication[crawly skin]thing? My first symptoms aside from irratic cycles was tingling in many forms, mouth, tongue, face, arm, hands, bottom, legs, feet... Some attribute this to estrogen dominance, but it is most certainly a common issue for many of us on PS.

It has decreased over the years for me, or maybe my REACTION to it has been more stable. I was scared to death when I first had it and there were no answers.

Please check out all the threads on this symptom of peri. It will ease your mind. Do talk to a doc, too, so that any other condition can be ruled out.

Peace to all my PS sisters...

I had one had do the numb tingly thing early on in peri. Also, had the veins "pop up" in my hands and feet too. Then I saw a vascular surgeon who explained the painful veins would/might feel better once my hormone levels stabilized. And, that hormones are vasoconstrictive and affect veins, arteries, blood flow, etc. Now, they don't hurt like before but still aren't "pretty". Doc did say he could do something to make them look better but I'm holding off due to being sick of seeing doctors. lol Hope you get it all sorted out. Regards, JZZ

I bet you are thinking that you have MS................................... We all do it.

It is so complex that even the doctors have never got to grips with it. It is closely tied in with ovarian shut down and the reaction of the thyroid to all the changes. Your thyroid is already misbehaving so your problems are going to be magnified.

I find it very interesting how some women are acutely aware of things such as this and others just breeze along with no symptoms. Mind you, the other day I read a story of how a woman went along to her doctor feeling slightly 'off' and gave birth to healthy twins only days later. How could you not be 'aware' of a pregnancy and a twin one at that?
This illustrates the difference in the way individual women 'feel' hormonal changes. I experienced vast changes in my body and mind during my pregnancies and had morning sickness for the first 8 months of my 1st pregnancy. That was sheer hell. I should have known that I was going to suffer at menopause! rolleyes.gif

I just wish I was one of those individuals that blundered along in blissful ignorance................Sigh. sad.gif

enough
I have had them both too. My hands are so ugly with the veins popping out. It is scary too. You are not alone and it does seem to pass, but it is certainly freaky when it occurs.

I have had the numbness in my hands alot lately. I have also felt it in my upper arm. If does come and go---sometimes i don't notice it for months at a time---then i will feel it everyday for a while.
I believe it is symptom #1,658,896,876!!!!!!

Thanks everyone for replying.

It makes me very angry that I did this trial run of BHRT and the estrogen, I guess, caused this to magnify. I have read that estrogen can cause this vein issue and tingling and numbness in women who have the predisposition for it. I did not have one bit of it until I tried the BHRT. It must have been too strong. I have gotten to the point that I do not know what to do or who to believe! Today my feet are so numb, it is really scaring me. Also freaking out about all this and emotional stress just makes it worse!

Thanks for all your support and understanding.

Hi,
Yes, I have had the exact same symptoms of tingling and numbness in my hands and feet. I also get it in my face at times. It is a scary feeling that makes you think you're having a stroke or something! I have also felt panic with these episodes and the tingling gets worse with the panic. For me the episodes come and go. I think getting off the BHRT is smart if you're having such symptoms while taking hormones.

I have Raynaud's syndrome at times (my mom had it, too, and it got much worse when she went through menopause) - a finger, toe, or part of a hand or foot will become totally white and numb, like there's no blood flow there whatsoever. It feels and looks like that particular appendage is dead - it's so weird. I have to put my hand or foot into warm water and massage it until it gets blood flow back into the area. I never had it before it in my life until I began going through perimenopause. I believe it is hormone-related. Hormones are powerful chemicals that affect our bodies so much and work in very complex ways.

I wish I had answers for you regarding HOW hormones cause it, how the adrenals are involved, etc. but I have the same questions. Thyroid, adrenals, etc. all deal with hormones of various kinds, so no wonder there are so many bodily responses we go through! I trust that some women just have a harder time going through hormonal changes than others do. Just want you to know that you're not alone and others also experience such things.

Thanks Dizzy Dee. I really appreciate your post and understanding. I think I have Raynaud's syndrome. I may have had it for a while, but these crazy hormones have made it worse. It may have never really surfaced if not for taking that trial of BHRT. Here I thought I was helping things and everything I have taken has made me worse! This is all just way too much. Thanks again for your post.
