Hi all,

Wondering if this can be peri? I am 41, have multiple fibroids and a uterus the size of a 12 week pregnancy and a complex ovarian cyst that will have to be removed. My doctor says not to worry about the fibroids, he seems to think I will make it to menopause with these. For the past two years, my periods have been getting lighter and shorter. The days between cycles have been jumping. I used to be 28 days and 7 days of pretty heavy bleeding with clots, but now they seem to be anywhere between 21 and 29. The last two cycles were at 29 days, went for 3 days and then some spotting for two days, and this most recent one, went for 4 days, cramps and came at 25 days. I have been getting hot and cold flashes - not at the same time(!), crying a lot, feeling unmotivated to do anything, have gained and lost abdominal fat, get tingling in fingers, feeling more tired than usual, often hard time sleeping, no interest in sex at all. My mom hit meno at 48, skipped many periods through the years, and had two children, was on birth control. My mom also had heavier cycles in her 30's. I am overweight, never had kids, never skipped periods, no birth control. OBGYN thought I might be too young to be going into peri, and he ordered a thyroid test. My thyroid was last tested 3 years ago, was fine. Is it possible I am in peri? How can I handle the mood swings- basically fears and crying? I am trying to keep the fibroids from growing and am taking a multi-vitamin, a B complex. COQ-10, Enzymes and acidphilous, and a product called Estro-sense. I am working on trying to reduce my estrogen load. I have given up fast food, soda, and pretty much only drink water, try to eat 25-30 grams of fiber a day. My mom had HER-2+ breast cancer- probably from taking HRT - she does have a gene alteration that makes her suspectible to estrogen.

Thanks for any help!

Hi Kelly:

Welcome to PS!!! It sounds like you are starting peri. You are not too young. As you read through here you will find women that were post menopause at age 32!!! I am 45 almost 46 and have been in peri since age 36. Most doctors dont agree with idea of peri or that women actually experience many changes before they stop having periods.

It is great that you are being aggressive about your fibroids and other stuff. Try to be patient with yourself. Keep coming back here and reading. You will find lots of information and many compassionate and caring women who are quite smart and can give you great advice.

Hugs to you,
Jeaninne

I may be in peri also so I feel your pain. Just try to hang in there.
