Full Version: Anyone ever had blood test for DHEAS?

My blood test for DHEAS (sulfate), while in the normal range, was at the high end--188. Up to 200 is "normal."

I have been searching all avenues to try to find out why I have such fatigue (have had it for years but it is definitely progressing to near exhaustion), and I've read that the adrenal glands could be exhausted, but I thought that would mean the DHEAS would be low end, not high end.

I will see my doctor next Friday. I cant' find anything very definitive on the Internet, and of course this result is still in the normal range, but with this fatigue I expected it to be really low, not almost out of range high.

I'd appreciate anyone who has had this test posting what their value was, or if anyone has a better understanding of this hormone.

Thanks.

Thanks for the fast reply!

Are you postmenopausal? Do you remember your number?

It's so hard to be, like you say, clueless!

I have had my DHEAs and testosterone along with free T done countless times. Most times, it has been frankly elevated. Some women, in response to FSH/LH generate big amounts of androgens from both the ovaries AND the adrenals. Sometimes, the levels wane as we get further into meno..sometimes they don't.
Ed Klaiber's book, "Hormones and the Mind" talks about how women who have the toughest times with meno are women that have higher androgen levels.
I have had success getting my T down a bit with regular exercise and keeping my serum glucose stable and below 140..I don't follow a restricted carb diet, but most of the carbs I eat are either carefully portioned controlled OR complex. The only thing that helped (and I verified this three times with f/u serums) with elevated DHEAs that made me feel like my mind was flying apart/thoughts fragmented was cranio-sacral therapy. I would have levels in the 240-250 range, do some C-S and BOOM, down to 140's.

Thank you so much for your information. What you said about flying apart/fragmented thoughts describes how I have been feeling mentally. I always say to my husband, "I don't know, I just feel CRAZY today."

I am looking into alternative treatments, especially body work, like the crani-sacral and other methods. Dr. Weil talked about that. My problem is finding someone I don't have to drive 30 miles to get to. I've also developed a driving phobia since having an accident where I was injured.

I am extremely careful about diet. I eat so well and deny myself most every treat that I think I should feel a lot better than I do.

Menopause is maddening.

Thanks again. I will see if I can find that book you mention (probably used, since my library is worthless and because my husband has been unemployed for three months--which is so not helping my healh status).
