I'm 49, still getting my period. Have been in perimenopause for a VERY long time, I think almost 10 years now. mad.gif

Symptoms, I've had them all - but here's a new one that reared its ugly head this past week. dry.gif

NAUSEA - fels like morning sickness all the time, 24/7. That queazy feeling where you only want to eat one particular food or type of food, anything else - even the thought - makes you fell nauseus.

OK, I know what my body is doing and I know I am nauseus, Went to my nurse practitioner yesterday because this is the final straw - I CANNOT be nauseous like this all the time and I KNOW it is hormonal because it started last week right before my period and has continued unceasingly. I also suffer hormonal migraines and this sick to my stomach feeling is accompanied by a low grade headache and extreme noise sensititivity - to the point where I almost went nuts in the grocery store thi week with all the music, TV ads, screaming kids, etc.

The nurse says no way is the nausea a symptom of peri - she has never heard anyone complain of that in peri. She says it must be post nasal drip. I know it's not.

So please = post nausea symptoms here so I'll know I'm not alone.

I used to get the nausea.....i still do sometimes as a matter of fact.Strange that the nurse said it wasn't a peri symptom.....my doctor asked me if i get nauseous around my period.Evidently all the people in the medical field have their own opinions.....

I do get bouts of nausea infact my appetite is out the window as we speak and has been for about a week.It goes in spells.I honestly think most doctors/nurses have no clue when it comes to peri..GRRRRR dry.gif

Yep, had the nausea and noise senstivity too. I think most docs are clueless in regard to Peri/meno. Also, for me, the nausea was the least of what I have had to deal with during peri. Didn't even bother mentioning the nausea or noise sensitivity to the docs. Luckily those 2 issues were shortlived. Regards, JZZ

Yes, I've got it right now...terrible stomach issues. The nausea, GERD, indigestion, constipation, bouts of diarrhea...all of it has become terrible. I feel yucky a lot of the time...I really really have to watch what I eat when I feel like eating. Several weeks ago I could only tolerate Club crackers and soda...had to be a carbonated beverage. Now I feel like eating more, but then the acid reflux and heartburn start, so it's just not worth it. Tonight it has been nausea too...I can also relate mine to how I felt during pregnancy, a different "smell" comes with it, this same smell I've only ever encountered with both of my pregnancies. I am finding that with this peri, and keep in mind that my dr. won't recognize the term peri and says that I'm too young, symptoms keep getting worse. I used to get some relief when my cycle would start, not any longer, no matter what time of the month, I can feel crappy.

Hope you're feeling better,
Tracey

I get the nausea too. I believe it is definitely hormone related and definitely a symptom of peri. doctors and the like dont know anything about peri. They assume it is a easy thing to blow through. They should all have to experience it biggrin.gif

I'll be 45 this year, still getting periods, and I, too, get nausea. I don't get it as often as you descibe, but it is definitely the same feeling I had when I was pregnant. I know it is hormonal. I get the other symptoms you describe, also (headache, sick to stomach) but I also get extreme sensitivity to smells. It's nuts. Just wanted you to know you're not alone!

Hi Margie,
Don't believe anyone who says nausea isn't part of peri! I've known so many women who have had it and from what I read on these boards it's not at all uncommon. I had it really bad for about a month when I had every pregnancy symptom I ever had while pregnant. It was the pits and I lost 5 pounds in less than a week (not a bad thing!) from not being able to eat. My NP was surprised by the complaint of nausea and suggested that I had a GI virus or something. Nope, I firmly believe it was a massive hormonal surge (a last hurrah of sorts!) before my ovaries went to sleep forever. The nausea and other "pregnancy" symptoms went away as quickly as they appeared. This probably isn't any help other than to know you are not crazy or imagining thing and definitely not suffering from some horrible disease. It's all part of the beginning of the next phase of your life. Try some peppermint tea...I hear it works for some women and hang in there. This too shall pass!

Hello Margie,

I am so sorry for what you are going through. I can truly sympathize as I too, have been going through peri for a long time, since summer of 96 I'm pretty certain.

For the past month now I've had nausea off and on most of each day. Lots of stomach burning, gas pressure and pain and acid reflux. I have been upping my water intake trying to put out the fire in the pit of my stomach and my throat.

It does make eating or even looking at food very unappealing. I've been trying to avoid carbonated beverages which seems to exacerbate the problem for me. Not hard to do since I prefer 2% milk to soft drinks anyday. I know milk bothers some people but for me it's one of the few things that does provide some relief.

Anyway I believe my stomach trouble is related to peri, I think it's kicking up my IBS to a whole 'nother level.

I truly think that nurse was mistaken about nausea not being related to peri. It amazes me how little the medical profession seems to understand peri and it's symptoms.

I wish you the best.
