Hi ladies,
I'm new to this board as a poster although I've read the posts off and on for several years. I'm 48 years old and still having my period, but I've started keeping a journal and the cycles can be anywhere from 23-30 days. In the last several months I've noticed several things-extra anxiety which I take xanax for and these strange dizzy spells. They appear out of nowhwere and it's like a giant whoosh across my head..it's a momentary feeling of "I'm gonna faint". sometimes I grab onto what I am standing next to, only to have the feeling subside within 2 seconds. Often it is followed by an intense feeling of heat in my face or body and then it goes away. It is really starting to freak me out! Does anyone else get this. I take Repliva for anemia, but at my last dr visit in March my blood level was normal so it's doing it's job. This dizzy feeling is really worring me and it obviosly makes my anxiety increase. Can anyone relate?

I had dizzy spells too. Don't know about the meds you're on though. Maybe check those out with your docs. But, yes dizziness and the flushing can be part of Peri. Regards, JZZ

Dizziness, feeling off balance and feeling all floaty were my biggest symptoms of peri. In fact I found Power Surge when I googled menopause and dizziness! I had no idea, until I found this site, there was a connection. My dizziness became more prevalent the closer I got to meno. I went thru meno at 46/47. I am now 48, I take bio hormones and I am not dizzy anymore.

Thanks for the insight...it really helps knowing others have the same feelings. It's just such a strange sensation and any time I mention it to the dr. he just shurgs his shoulders and thinks I'm crazy..so I quit mentioning it! Like I said, my cycle is usually anywhere from 22-26 days but two periods ago it was 30 days then the next one bounced by to 21.

Oh the dizziness what a joy that has been for me. It has been one of my main problems through this time. I was really never dizzy before in my life and one morning I woke up, stood up and tipped over, I crawled across the floor until my husband took me to the ER, where they could find nothing and by that time it was going away. For a few days I had residual fogginess, this started my on/ off dizziness and several tests.....sometimes it is bad and other times I just feel woozy. I was in the middle of a heavy period when this first episode happened.....don't know if this was coincidental, but I sware it was related.
dizziness can be a precurser that a flash is coming because a hot flash affects the blood vessels, dizziness can be a side effect of that along with a headaches, tingling, numbness, detachment.
I get this just before a hotflash myself, sometimes it is more troublesome and others I never feel it before I get warm. The dizziness also showed up for me when my cycles became irregular. I wish mine only lasted a few seconds though because for me there were days that I would walk around like I had downed a whole bottle of cuagh syrup, felt drunk and then those days where I had to hang on to something for fear of tipping over. So my dizziness didn't seem to be just related to hotflashes...it got really rough the few day before a period and into and at ovulation...I think for me it would seem the sudden ups and down of my hormones also caused some of the problem.
I don't know the fix for it it just comes and goes without warning, I use a netti pot to keep my sinuses clear that is about it. I would still get it checked though to be sure nothing else is going on, but dizziness is more common thatn I knew during the transition. Hugs Mikki

Oh yes I still get the dizziness now-three years on from surgical menopause. It is usually the precurser of a flash coming.
I have regular acupuncture and my therapist said it is caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure. I find its much worse if I rush about and overdo it. Then my blood pressure drops and I have to grab on to something fast.
I try not to get anxious about it - it IS a horrid feeling but up to now I have never fainted once if that is any comfort to you.

It sounds to me like you are having hot flashes. I sometimes get a quick dizzy feeling followed by a feeling of heat in my chest and back and general weakness. Those are just one of my several types of hot flashes I experience.... lucky us huh?

Hi ldmdream, I can so relate to the dizzy/woozy thing. It's driving me crazy. I am off balance all of the time and have to hold onto something just to put on shoes, pants or socks. Sometimes I spin in bed and it scares the crap right out of me and I have an anxiety attack. My sister also is having lots of fun with dizzy spells and neither of us have hot flashes at the same time. I am just woozy, off balance, light headed, fog headed, cotton headed and spaced out anymore. Geeeeeeeze!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks everyone-these spells are NOT FUN...they scare me.. but by the time I think twice about it they are gone...is there anything to take to help prevent them? They do seem to come more frequently when it's a few days before my period starts. Then there's times when they come while I'm bleeding and a while later I have a flooding episode. I'm also having problems with alot of anxiety and some days I feel like my body is running a race...I feel all hyped up like my body is running away. This is not fun at all... what can be done? I do have the xanax for anxiety and it seems like I have to take more of it at certain times of the month than others. Has anyone ever tried the meclizine for the dizziness and if so does it work? Yall are great!

I find my dizziness gets WORSE if I don't eat enough, almost like my blood sugar drops really low and it really makes me even dizzier and I really very spacey like I'm going to faint, but surprisingly I never faint, but I don't think the lack of food is the cause of the dizziness. Its definitely hormones because this whole problem started when I hit 45!

This is so irritating...The fleeting dizzy spells went away for a few days and now they are back. Nothing I do causes them to come on. I can bend over, squat down, tilt my head back and nothing happens. I'll just be standing working or sitting and wham..a fleeting feeling like.."wow I'm about to faint". But I don't. Sometimes I rarely get hot after this feeling. It's just there and then it's gone. It's so weird I wouldn't even know how to explain it to the Dr. Most of the time now my head feels like it's in a fog..like you do when you have a head cold, except I don't have one of those. My labs back in March were fine when I went to the Dr. It's just a weird, scary and annoying feeling. I can be feeling really great and then when these things hit it really scares me and depresses me. UGGGGH!

Hi ldm:
I get the exact same thing. I can be sitting up in bed reading and suddenly, I feel like everything is moving and boom it is gone. I get them at all times of day and some are worse than others but they always pass. I just assume it is peri because nothing is wrong with me that would cause this, doctors checked. It is still scary and I sure hope it goes completely away just as suddenly as it showed up!

I sure can relate!!! I've had dizziness problems for five years now. I also have almost all of the 34 symptoms of menopause, although I still have periods. I have the same feelings you describe. You're not alone, although what we all go through is AWFUL. Dizziness does make my anxiety worse- I feel so vulnerable when I've got a weird feeling in my head and am unstable.
Hang in there!

Yea that's me...I can be working or talking and just turn my head or move slightly and boom-split second woozy! Then it's gone...but the uncertaintly and anxiety it leaves behind are awful. Sometimes I don't even have to make any movements..it just comes. What gets me is that I rarely have the hot flash after it that some of yall talk about. That may happen once out of every 10 times and if it does its just a hot feeling..no sweating. THIS IS CRAZY!

What I have experienced sounds something like you are talking about. I referred to it as falling sensation while you are awake, similar to the falling sensation you get when sleeping. It would stop me in my tracks and come out of nowhere. The worst one of these things happened while I was eating dinner. I had this last year for the first time, and it lasted off and on for a month. I had the same thing happen last month. My doctor said it was hormone and anxiety related.

going on two years of perimenopause...my list of symptoms are long and what I thought were unusual. Growing up as a young girl, all I heard about this time of life was the words "hot flash". Come to find out there is so much more to this change of life thing. To address the issue at hand. In the beginning stages of my perimenopause journey, I went through a period of feeling dizzy or unbalanced. One of my jobs require much walking and I had weeks or months of actually needing to focus on my walking and feeling as though my balance was off and I might fall over. There would also be fleeting moments of feeling like I might pass out. This sensation has past, but I've come to learn that symptoms seem to come and go.

I don't use a neti pot but I can tell you, doing sinus irrigations have saved me. I used a baby ear cleaner I got at the dollar store. I used warm salt water. These kits in the pharmacy are a gimmic and a waste of money.
When I feel I have any infection and or inflamation, I add oil of oregano to the salt water.
I can tell you, since doing these irrigations, I have not had one sinus infection, cold and or ANY post nasal drip. It's been a wonderful healing tool for me
