This is my first post since learning of these forums but I have been reading a lot and really feel glad to have found all of you. I'm 45 have been meno for approx 3 years (no periods) and after dealing with horrible hot flashes/night sweats for these last 3 years finally gave in and started lowest dose Evamist spray 3 months ago and dr. also prescribed prometrium for 10 days every 3 months. 1 month into the Evamist I felt wonderful and no flashes or night sweats, renewed energy... all was great. This is the 3rd month so started prometrium today, but I think I may have started on the wrong day. Had first period after 3 years of none Mar 15 and then 45 days later started extremely light bleed Apr 28 and still am extrememly light (not even worthy of more than a pantiliner and it's not every day). I decided to start the prometrium today, being the first of the month... I thought it would help me keep track of when to take since I'm not taking every month but reading posts today I realized that I maybe should have waited for a few more days after the light bleeding stops. At the time when prescribed I hadn't had a period or spotting for 3 yrs so dr. told me to start prometrium at a time of the month that would help me remember. Do you think it is OK that I started today? I have a call into the dr. but it's Friday late afternoon so I may not hear from her before Mon.

Also, didn't realize the side effects I would be feeling so I took in the AM and had horrible fatigue, dizziness and headache all day. Now after reading I will try the next dose before bed. I'm a little nervous as I take another medication at bedtime that also makes me sleepy for chronic headaches. I'm going to stop in and see the pharmacist this evening and see what he suggests about when to take.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi there,

You can start the Prometrium on the first of the month no problem. It will help you to remember when to take it. If you're not having periods you start when you want, but keep it the same day each month.
There should be no problem with taking it while you have spotting. I have done this before.

I used to take it after dinner so that most of it would be out of my system by the time I woke up. How much are you taking? I found it was very strong for me and the side effect of fatigue lingered a little too long the next day. This may not be a problem for you though.
Good idea to check with the pharm about the two medications. The P might even help with your headaches and it will definitely help you to sleep.
Good luck and let us know how you do with taking it at night.

Hi there! This is my first time posting. I need someone to help me understand why I should start taking prometrium today, next dose in Aug. and final dose in Nov. My dr. wants me to take it with my estradiol and in Nov. he'll pull my bloodwork and I'll probably start bioidenticals in Jan. I've been having my period since I was 6...yes ladies, since I was 6. I feel that if my body is done, it should be done. I'm having trouble trying to understand why he wants me to have 3 more periods. He said that it should help to remove the lining and to alleviate any break through bleeding. Can anyone shed any more light? Thanks much in advance, Donna

Thanks, Cathy, I appreciate your help. I expect to speak to the doctor on Monday and will keep in mind your experience when I talk to her. Thanks again,
