Full Version: Itchy breasts--Which hormone is causing?

I think i posted this once before, but I'm going insane with this symptom that comes every now and then. Has anyone got an idea which hormone is off when you start to get the itchies. For me it's usually only my boobs.

I'm taking .75mg of Estrogel and 1.25mg bi-est almost every day, so I would think I have enough estrogen, right? I just finished my 14 days on prometrium but this month I took just 100mg a night b/c I keep thinking my weight issues may be from the higher dose of prometrium.

Is it low estrogen, or low progesterone? ANyone have an idea?

Hey Corky,

Since you just fiished your round of prometrium, it could be a reaction to that... My daughter itches during the luteal phase of her cycle, when progesterone is highest and I know other women who have this reaction as well! Sounds like your progesterone is higher right now...

corky,

I used to go insane with the itchy boobs before BHRT, since I started the hormones, no more itchies (THANK GAWD!!). I would scratch so hard I would leave welts that would last for days!!

I switched the prometrium to vaginal about a week ago because of liver function issues, and since I did this my monster appetite has settle right down (and here I thought it was Paxil causing it!!) and I have dropped 7 pounds (fluid retention perhaps?) and my liver function is much improved over only a few short days. I sure hope the itchies don't return though....it is scary to mess with something that appeared to be working...but apparently wasn't!! mad.gif

I've been dealing with the itchy boobs for the last couple of weeks. First it was the back to back hot flashes...that has subsided only to be replaced with the itching.

Floater you are the only person, that I can remember smile.gif, besides myself who had some liver function issues while taking prometrium orally. I used prometrium years ago and also ended up switching to using it vaginally...which fixed whatever was going on with my liver.

Hi Corky,
I get itchy breasts when my estrogen drops, either because my estrogen levels have dropped or my estrogen receptors are being blocked by progesterone (I take Prometrium cyclically). Lots of times my back will be itchy then too. I bet if you increased your Estrogel dose, the itching would disappear.

Oh wow, I am glad to hear someone else reacted the same way as me! Not that I am glad you had problems, but it is good to know I am not alone. I am also hoping the switch to vaginal went well. So far so good for me, but it hasn't been that long. I am slightly concerned I might go thru a withdrawal phase. Did you suffer from that at all??

Wow! That's quite interesting Floater about the prometrium and the weight gain...congrats on the loss! I know that progesterone does cause me to gain weight as well and I have been upping my estrogen during the luteal phase trying to get rid of the increased appetite and balance things out more...was a little more succeessful this round but I would imagine I need to increase it significantly during the luteal phase to see a difference for me! Yes, that bloated feeling is as diffficult as the itchies... I'm currently working on helping my dd eliminate that as well!

I've increased my Estradiol from .25mg a day to 1mg and the estriol to 1mg and yet I still get the itchiness. It comes and then goes. Weird.

hi Floater,

I think I will ask for the vaginal myself. Also how did you know you had a liver issue? DId it come back on the blood test or did you have symptoms?

WOW!
I am so glad to see someone post about itchy boobs!! ohmy.gif
I had this problem back about a month ago and it had lasted for a few months. I rarely have a period anymore, but about the time they stopped itching I had a period...mostly stress related, but after the period things have calmed down and I don't itch anymore.
I'm not on any HRT so you could say I'm going through this journey naturally!
At least if it happens again I'll know its related to the meno crap!!

Corky,

I had routine blood work done and it showed liver enzymes were elevated (so was cholesterol and sugar). I switched the Prometrium to vaginal and had the blood retested about 4 days later and all the liver enzymes had gone back to normal except for the GGT, which the doc figures will continue to come down over the next few weeks. I had to say the change was dramatic and rapid. So I would say try it vaginally. I also feel more energetic, perhaps the P was making me tired. And dumped 7 pounds...poof....gone!! And the monster appetite, gone.

TJ, you know I never once suspected the Prometrium might be the culprit in the weight gain (which has been significant) and the monster appetite!! I honestly blamed it on the Paxil. I have found it almost surreal, how much that appetite has been tamed!! I don't feel the need to eat and eat and eat, its weird. But nice!! And the energy is better. I am not having to be laying down by 7pm anymore. I can stay busy all day, and into the evening. I hope you can figure out what is up with you and "fix" it.

Hey Floater,

My body is naturally making too much P from day 23 until I have my period and the P is making me have the extreme cravings! I really think it is the adrenals putting out too much! So during that time I do not supplement with P. I'm tweaking the estrogen in hopes that I find a dose that works best during that time! It may take a while, but I have faith that I'll get there!

Interesting that you are having the itching as well...you must have ovulated and your progesterone levels were high which caused the itching and the bleed. It happens to my dd every month and after her period it goes away but it drives us both batty while it is happening...puberty and peri at the same time how blessed am I!!! rolleyes.gif

I'm going to give it a try too. Thanks, Floater.

It was so many peri years ago smile.gif, but I don't recall having any withdrawals. I can not remember why I stopped using Prometrium..hmm...
