Hello
I am getting electric shocks through my head and body and wondered if anyone else has them? They are really scary and stop me in my tracks.I have read that they are a symptom of the menopause but would like some reassurance please.
Thanks

I do now and then. And i get woke up at night with them. Feels like I stuck a finger in an electrical outlet. It's just WHAM...bolt right out of bed. Usually an intense hot flash hits also. I don't know why they happen except hormones doing it. I'm sure one of the ladies knows more why and will post.
Hope our brain cells don't get fried, I don't know about you but I need everyone I have! LOL
Hope knowing someone else has the same thing gives you a little comfort.

I too have had the 'stuck finger in electrical socket' feeling that is also accompanied by a buzz sound (not that I made a habit of this growing up!). Sometimes it just feels like a jolt and buzzing. LUCKILY, it doesn't happen often. If I hadn't read on this web site about some of the weird peri stuff that can happen, I would have TOTALLY freaked out! Now, I'm able to only slightly freak, remember that I saw it mentioned here, and start to calm down.
Welcome to the club!

Yes, I've had them in the past but haven't had any lately, knock on wood! Have you recently stopped any medications? That can also cause them...

Hi All
Thank you for your replies. I am taking seroxat for my anxiety which came with my menopause. They do say you get side effect from the meds but it just frightens me. I never wanted to take meds as they are might be hard to come off? I suppose we have just got to put up with the zaps, some days I get them for most of the day. Any pain in my head frightens me so these are awful.
I am so glad I found this wesite. You are so helpful. I have not had a period fgor pover a year so believe I am in menopause, I just wish I knew how long I have to put up with this.
Thank you

I agree that it is frightening...and it could be the seroxat...eventually it goes away!

I used to get them quite a bit and they scared the living daylights out of me. I nicknamed the head jolts "jitterbrain". Mine were mostly in my head and not so much anywhere else in the body. The wonderful ladies on this site helped me through some very scary times. Keep the faith----it will get better. You are in good company here.
Take care,

Hi Sharon, I experienced this when I stopped taking Prozac. It was maddening. It lasted for weeks and disappeared as quickly as it started. I do get those shocks in my back in the same place though every now and then. It boggles my mind and I try not to freak out about it. I am sure it's just another fine peri symptoms. Ask your physician if it continues. he probably won't have a clue either.....lol

I had one today in my upper lip while I was talking and immediately felt sick to my stomach. I was thinking it was a facial thing like tic delauroux, which I hear is awful. I have tmj so I wonder if that is the connection, or just plain menopause. I hope that it's meno, since that is a passing thing.

Yes I get these too! They were at their worst when trying to go to sleep. I still get a mild form of it now especially when I've lost sleep. I will doing things normal and all of a sudden zzzzzzztt...zapped!! I used to worry about it but not any more it's another thing to add to the list!
Cheers choco
Hi All
thank you so much for all your replies. it looks like we all get them. Its my worst side effect as I am not sure if its the meno or meds. hopefully I want to stop the meds soon as I would rather go down the natural rout and stop the anxiety myself(I know its hard).
Again many thanks.
Love to you all

Hi girls I'm new. Thanks to this site I know I am not the only one. This has happened to me twice during the night, I awoke from my sleep. My initial thought was that it was some sort of short circut going on in my brain. The brain is full of electricity it was wild. We are not crazy!! Good luck to everyone.

Hello You All,
Am I glad to find some recognition here ! The year I turned 50 ( three years ago), I got these anxiety-attacs out of an uncontrollable electric flash mounting from my uterus straight into the head , leaving me with tinnitus-like electric sounds which were absolutely maddeningly loud and hung in for days. I thought I was done for and was not prepared to live any further because of the loud and maddening noise.
Ofcourse I was sedated by my doctor (alprazolam) and took seroxat for half a year. My internal shakings were very heavy, especially in the mornings whilst showering.
I've come a long way, tried every supplement in the book ( the menopause supplement program in Dr. Christiane Northrup's) and was diagnosed hyperthyreoid after a year, which after another year has turned into hypo- ( I'm on 50mg thyroid hormone a day).
I have taken HRT for exactly one year, the depressions I got out of it were horrible, especially the week before menstruation. It's been two months now since I've stopped HRT and discovered DR Lee's book on perimenopause, which makes lots of sense to me, especially since I've had PMS all my life. By the way, against depression I take 500mg of St John's worth before going to bed.
Until 50 my lifestyle was between healthy and unhealthy, I didn't have much reason to bother. Upon becoming 50 that's all changed, I lost 15 kilos of my weight, that leaves me with a BMI of 23 which is the only good thing that came out of all this. I live very very healthy now, no _ines (cafeine, etc) or alcohol, no smoking , healthdiet.
The electric sounds in my head have gone down in intensity and frequency, first they came every second day, now every third. Brainfog and impossibility to think or remember are less severe as well.
Sleeping is an issue, I dont get much of it, but now I've started natural progesterone cream (serenity) and hope things will improve even more.
Menstruation has not come back since I've stopped HRT but I don't know if I'm menopausal or peri-.
For all you out there who suffer electric sounds and brainfog, this story is so elaborate especially for you, hopefully it'll help a bit, I feel for you !

Hi All
Thank you for your replies. just to let you all know i asked my doctor about them, guess what she was unsure, so she advised me to stop taking seroxat and gave me sertraline to start. I will start the sertraline tommorow and see how I get on.
The joys of being a woman. LOL
I will keep you all posted.
Thanks

Hi All
Just though I would give you an update to my never ending symptoms. I was put on sertraline about 3 weeks ago as soroxat was giving me too many side effects. I woke up a few days ago with bruises on my arms and legs. I rang the NHS helpline (for those of you not in the UK, we have a helpline we can phone for medical advice) who advised me to go to see the doctor. I went to see a doctor, who is not my usual one, who told me to come off the meds immedietly and go to see my own doctor on Monday.
I have decided that due to the side effects, I am not going to take AD,s anymore for my anxiety as I do not think they suit me. I want to go down the natural route and find an alternative. I am going to see my usual doctor tommorow to see what they say. If they offer me more meds I feel like asking them to take them as see how they feel with head zaps and feeling like a zombie. Sorry ladies feeling a bit down today as I feel they just want to write presciptions out.
Any advice on natural anxiety medication will be very much appretiated.
Love to you all
