I was wondering if anyone can help me out on this one. Last night I woke up after being in bed for 2 and a half hours with a pain in my midback (around the area where the bottom of the bra strap is) and it went through to my stomache. I really don't know if it was coming from my stomache or my back but it was a deep pain, stabbing, piercing. I got up and went to the bathroom and once I was up for a while it lessened some. I got in the reclinder and put a heat pad on my tummy and then switched to my back and it went away. It hurt so bad. This is the second time this has happened to me. Last time being just a little over a month ago. Today my back and tummy area feels sore. This scared me last night. I am post menopause, I don't have my gallbladder anymore or my appendix. I can't figure out if this is a problem with my back or with my tummy. Has anyone else had this happen to them? All responses will be appreciated.

Sounds like GERD symptoms. Gastro esophogeal reflux disease aka heartburn but BAD. It can feel like you are being stabbed in the back with a knife! and the stomach pain can be horrid. Try some otc prilosec for a week or so and see what happens. I have been taking it for years and no problems anymore!

My first thought, because of the location, was hiatal hernia. I have that and it can be quite painful. Stress of any kind seems to make it worse. I try to avoid eating late at night before I go to bed, I avoid caffeine at all costs and even carbonated seltzer can sometimes aggravate it. I also sleep elevated which works for the hernia as well as the acid reflux issue.
Chiropractic manipulation keeps most of the symptoms at bay when I can find the time to get to him.

(I also don't have my gallbladder anymore, but sometimes I get horrible gas pains in that area, too, and it quite mimics gallbladder pain)

I do not want to scare you- but my cardiologist told me that pain that is in the upper middle stomach that radiates to the back can be a problem with your aorta. If it persists, you should really get it checked out, just to be safe.

Thank you for all your replies.

Jonesy,
I know you didn't want to scare me. I did have a nuclear stress test just one year ago and an echo which all came back ok. Did you mean it could be symptoms of a heart attack? I checked when the last time I had it before this happened two days ago and it was over a month ago.

Lizardlover,
I have been sitting at the computer for over an hour now and it is starting to hurt. Not as bad as the other night but I can feel it. I also can't sit at the computer long. I get it in my back and also in my neck. I have never taken HRT.

About the hiatal hernia, I wonder about that also because that day at work, I was doing alot of lifting, bending and carrying heavy boxes down stairs. About 6 hours straight of working like that non stop.

I do have gerd. I have had it for years. I am on nexium and have been for about 3 years. That's not fun either.

Thanks for your ladies responses. Anymore suggestions if you have them would be appreciated. I just am hoping and praying I never get that again. It seems like once I got out of bed and straightened myself out for a while, it lessened.
