I just got back home from having my uterine ultrasound. And by the way...no one told me it was INTERNAL! blink.gif I was watching the screen and almost immediately I saw a big solid looking spot. The woman kept focussing on this spot. Getting measurements and different angles. It is the size of a large egg, perfectly oval, smooth sides, and solid black on the screen. It looked very "out of place" to me. I know it wasn't an ovary because she pointed both of them out and they were much smaller. Then she did an external ultrasound and the same spot was there right in the middle of my lower abdomen, right above my hair line. I asked her what it was and of course, she was very vague. She just said, "We see all kinds of things. It might be a fibroid or something." Am I stupid, or isn't it true that fibroids are not perfectly smooth solid black spots? I'm not scheduled for a biopsy till April 8th. Does anyone here on this board have any clue what I might be up against? Should I be concerned about this spot? unsure.gif

While I do not have any experience with this I just wanted to send big hugs your way and tell you that you are in my prayers.I hope it is something normal or easy to take care of.GOD-bless

I wouldn't be too worried. When I had my sonogram the radiographer said "there is a thickening-the doctor will tell you what that means."
I then saw the doctor who diagnosed endometrial cancer. I had already had a biopsy the previous week and the sonogram confirmed it. I think if its cancer. the endometrial stripe is thickened beyond normal. It doesn't look like an egg shape. They called it a lesion which is more a long thickened shape attached to the uterine lining. That's what mine was like.
It sounds like yours is more likely a fibroid. It doesn't sound as though its attached to the uterus. Your won't know for certain until the biopsy of course but try not to worry too much.
It's a pity you have to wait so long !

You shouldn't jump to any conclusions because you really don't have any idea what you were looking at. I know it's very tempting to look at the screen, as I have done many times, but it really doesn't do you any good, as I have learned. It was probably just your uterus, and she was measuring your lining, which is what she was supposed to be doing. Try not to worry. You're probably just fine.

Thanks, but I'm not jumping to any conclusions yet. smile.gif The "thing" we were looking at was not my uterus. It was INSIDE my uterus. I just needed some feedback from those of you who have been through something similar to this.

I had a sonogram on my uterus,a polyp was found, It was oval shaped and long .A biopsy was done,it was negative, like most polyps are.I'm due to have it removed on April 24th,but I am having second thoughts, because I have no symptoms. no heavy bleeding, no pain, Try not to worry, you will be fine.

I've had two transvaginal ultrasounds in the past five months and I wasn't able to see the screen either time. I'm surprised that they even had it positioned so you could see; I would think most women would be looking at the images, trying to figure out what's going on in there, and, unless you're trained to do so, that's probably not a good idea. I know that my mind would be all over the place!

Also, each time, I was given the results within 15-20 minutes afterwards, from my doctor(s). Both times, it was a submucosal fibroid, which is attached to the uterine lining. I can't tell you how a fibroid looks on an ultrasound, but apparently they're distinct enough. I know it's hard not to worry - believe me, I know! - but if they thought it was something really serious, you would be on a fast track to having it investigated further. Did they give you a report afterward and tell you what they thought it was or have you not been told that yet?

I am told I have a submucosal fibroid and it looks that way on the film - a large smooth dark object almost like a ball. For years now, I have been told that my ovaries and endo stripe are not visible because of it which is a little worriesome but my doctor has never wanted to investigate further.

I've had the polyps and the fibroids and they looked the same to me, but the fibroids were larger so it could be a fibroid... Are you having any pain at all..back pain or abdominal pain or difficulty walking?

I have had so many ultrasounds I have lost count. I could never figure out what was on the screen. It didn't look like anything I could ever identify. I saw lots of dark images, etc. on the screen. It did leave me nervous and wanting to know what was on the ultrasound. One time the radiologist did the ultrasound himself and told me right then and there what he saw. At least I found out immediately what it was---an ovarian cyst. (I went to ER cuz the pain was horrible.) I think that leaving the "reading" of the ultrasound is best read by the experts. I know the waiting to hear the results is hard.

I'm not having any pain at all. Just very heavy periods, when I have them. Which is not that often anymore. I know one thing....I'm very sore and I feel bruised down low from that woman puching down SO HARD when she was looking at that black spot. Someone was wondering why the screen was within my eyesight....it was actually mounted on the wall right beside the exam table. I think it was there for pregnant women to see the baby when their ultrasounds are being done. smile.gif

Yes, it's unusual for them to allow you to see the screen. That obviously makes us much more anxious when we see something that we are uncertain of. Pressing on it does make the pain worse for a while, but it usually subsides with some tylenol. I hope everything works out well for you Texas...waiting always seems to be the hardest part!
