I have been getting these stupid migraines with the vision disturbance right before I get hit with the headache! And I seem to get two or three of them in a week, and then don't get any for several weeks and then get them again.

I was getting them fairly regularly during the last year of peri, but once meno hit they went away for 18 months, and now they are back!! Why???

I hate them, and they hit me out of the blue. I can be feeling just fine and then WHAMMO....vision is messed up, and within a half hour I KNOW I will have a terrible headache. Happened on Saturday night, and then again this morning.

What causes them? Anybody have any ideas? I feel like a bag of crap, man, and I don't like it!! I have to work in 2 hours, and right now I don't know how I am going to manage that.

Hi Floater,

Sorry you're having to deal with this again.

My migraines (with colour aura and vision disturbance) were always hormone related but once I hit meno any I got seemed to be more stressed related.

I hope they go away and stay away this time.

Hugs,
Arla.

Maybe stress then.....

Some stress I just can't eliminate....so not fair!! Oh well, the pain has down graded from an 8 to a 4. I guess I can deal with it at this level, not that I really have a choice one way or the other!! huh.gif

I've only had about 4-5 migraines ever, and they seem to be connected with ingestion of aspartame for me. All of my migraines were preceded by the weird prism-like shimmering in one eye, then a sense of being out of body, and one time I also could not talk or understand what people were saying, the WHAMMO it was like suddenly getting hit with a sledgehammer. Being an ER nurse, of course I was sure I was having a stroke or tumor. Had an MRI and everything normal.

LOL biggrin.gif biggrin.gif I just realized you also used the word 'Whammo', Kathie. I guess it perfectly describes how fast and hard these migraines hit us.

Meant to also say that sometimes low blood sugar will do it.

Your post is almost too painful to reply to....I was having migraines 4 times a month...and I would be out of commission for 2 days per migraine. Add two heavy period days...and I was out for 10 days a month.

There are food triggers that can cause migraines. Keep a diary. Usually you crave food that you are allergic to??? .....isn't that odd?

I am allergic to vitamin C, lemon oil, red dye #3. ....but most of the migraines were due to out of balance hormones. Since starting bio indenticals, I have not had ANY migraines. I used to live in constant fear of getting them.

At least I had a 30 minute warning....light sparks...vision messed up...Then I start throwing up...It was horrible. ...and the pain....ouch!

My guess is that your hormones are still out of whack...or you have a food allergy?

I am going to stay on the bio hormones...My visions is always clear now.

I've had 3 or 4 aura migraines and I do think they are hormone related. I'm post now and would like to think they are gone!

My mother recently told me that during her late 40's and early 50's she had many migraine headaches and thinks it was menopause related. She didn't have a lot of other symptoms at the time. They have eased up for her now that she is in her 70's.

Hey Floater
I started having "aura" migraines at 25. They have all but stopped since going off birth control pills years ago. Occasionally I will get one from eye strain, but I'm nervous about hrt & whether or not this may bring them back. I feel bad that you are having them... they are horrid

(((Floats)))> migraines are the worse!

Sorry I don't know what causes them!

By the way....my great grandmother, grandmother, mother, and sisters all had/have migraines. I think that they are for the most part hormonal. Since starting bios, I have not had one. I am so very thankful!

I agree with Shebee, I would first suspect hormones, although I know you are taking them.

Also, MSG and aspartame (nutrasweet) are huge triggers. MSG seems to be in everything, and it hides under many different names.

Low blood sugar can also trigger them. Eat several small meals/day with protein at each one to keep the blood sugar even.

Are you drinking half your weight in oz. of water/day?

Oh geez, just realized this was an older thread, I'm sure Floater is no longer having problems now. And I most likely repeated myself rolleyes.gif

I have suffered from migraines for the better part of ten years until last year they changed from just the headache to auras and then severe vertigo which my ENT said can be explained on they just evolved to that point of with the hormone changes they became a different form.

I would recommend reading a book called "Heal Your Headache" that explains the headache and the different forms they can take and the things that will trigger them and how to control them with diet, and lifestyle changes. It is an easy read with a lot of really good information.

After following this advice I have not had a headache in many months although I still struggle with the vertigo issues I honestly believe that with lifestyle changes that some of this can be improved.

I was doing the same thing until I started bios. I have not had one since.

My doc says to watch and see at what time of the month they happen....ovulation and before my period is when they hit me. He says that if you will watch and see if there is a pattern, you should take extra E a day or two before. This will often alleviate the headaches. Although certain foods can cause a migraine, mine were purely hormonal. Perhaps your hormone levels are changing again?

Hope this helps!

I don't know if I've ever had a migraine, but I will tell you what has started happening just recently.

Sometimes.......when I get out in the wind, it feels like knives stabbing me all over the inside of my head. It's been very scarey a time or two and I have to get out of the wind FAAST!!

I couldn't go to the beach with my sister when she was here! It was horrid!

I have never had what I would think a migraine would be, where you cant open your eyes (well, maybe a time or two), but I've never had vomitting or had to go to the hospital.

I guess there are different types of migraines?

Hope you are feeling better, Kathie.

Well I have not had another one of those hideous headaches since I wrote the original post. Must have been a shift in hormones. I am currently off all forms of progesterone, I wonder if that could have been causing issues??

I am going to have to start again soon....but using transdermal instead of oral. Cross your fingers for me, that they don't return!!

Shebee, glad you are migraine free!! YAY!!!

Bev, that is kind of weird with the wind and pain, isn't it?? I wonder if it has anything to do with your ears? I know sometimes people have real trouble with wind and their ears....

Kathie, I am so glad your headaches are gone! What a nuisance they are!! Or worse!

Yea, it is weird about the wind, isn't it. I have had ear pain too, but I'm not feeling this particular pain in my ears, but who knows????

Just something else we have to deal with.

Hi Float, I've had migraines since I was 11...all have the aura..in a way it's lucky because if you are somewhere it can prepare you to either get home or some where safe. Lucky for me the furtherest I've been away from home my DD was on the way so I stopped off at her house til I could drive home. I've always been worried that it could happen when I was out and couldn't pick my kids u from school. I get them with the aura, numbness then I can't think (this was scarey) then the headache. They are the pits, touch wood I haven't had one for awhile!! (((FLOAT)))

Cheers choco
