Hi ladies,

Well, I couldnt' get the bottom part of my blood pressure down. Been taking it at home, been to the doc's once a week for the last 3 weeks and couldnt' get the bottom numbers down. Always stays up in the high 80's to middle 90's. Top number between 130's and 140's. So today, he said we had to add a water pill, prescribed me 12.5mg and said it was a very small dose, checked with pharmacist he said the same. So, here we go with the med phobia again, I'm scared to take it. I talked to someone and she told me that she had to take it when she was pregnant because she was retaining water, I'm figuring it's safe , ( I hope).
Can any of you ladies please reply and reassure me that this stuff is okay. Apparently, the pharmacist said, NO side effects just eat a banana every day because it does lower your potasium levels.
I would appreciate any comments from by beloved PS sisters.

Hugs and Love,

Moozie

i've been on this med before - for several years, in fact. it is just a water pill. absolutely NO side effects, well, except for having to pee like a race horse quite often!

how are you holding up with the wedding getting closer? been thinking about you - praying you're not letting anything stress you too much!!

Any diuretic can cause you to loose potassium and magnesium, so be sure to get plenty of those.

My husband takes that in combination with another BP med. It has helped him alot. Give it a try, can it hurt??? Don't stress over it hon, added stress you don't need! He also drinks alot of water and eats his banana every morning. If that has anything to do with it I haven't a clue.
Give it a try, relax smile.gif

Gyz, Anna,

Thanks for the replies. The wedding plans are coming along fine, everything with that is not a problem. I'm just thinking my BP isnt' that high to have to take it but I guess I will.

I'll keep you posted.

I took that in combination with something else for my BP. I took it for 2 years, and yes, had to pee like crazy, especially in the mornings after I took it. Don't take it at night! I also had to watch my potassium. But I got tired of having to contend with the going to the bathroom all the time, and got my doctor to switch me to a beta blocker. My bottom BP number is now usually about 82 on this, with the top number at 128 last time I was in. And I get the white coat syndrome.

But I do feel like I retain water now, and sometimes wish I were back on it. But it played havock with my work schedule. If I wanted to travel, it was a hassle because it really makes you go!

Maybe you won't have to take it for long.

Moozie,
I for one am really an antimed person, have alot of reasons for it but wont go there for now, have been given stuff I found out on my own I didnt need.

Ok as far as the water pill I do take one and a pill for the potassium, I do eat a banana a day and I take the water pill right in the morning so the first peeing thing gets out of my system.
You will get use to it take it in the early morning.
I didnt need BP meds only the water pill and that has done the trick so you might be pleasantly surprised and who knows maybe in the future he might be able to wean you off those meds if you do really well.

The doc did tell me I would be PEEING LIKE A RACE HORSE, and that visual always makes me laugh when I take that stupid, LOL, Pill in the morning.

Now I already was on some teas that help the ol pee go well because I have also suffered from UTI's in th past. I did my own research and fixed that one to.

I was having BP spikes around the time of my period and that is why I chose not to take the BP meds because I found I didnt have the spikes all month long.

All you have to do is try it for a while, adjust to it and then if you feel its not working then you have the last say right?
I will say deep breathing, taking a walk , exercising is really the best medicine.

So good luck,
God bless you
Dont worry just try it and see how it goes,

Tinkie,

Are you still taking it ? was that the only side effect. Remind me never to look up side effects on medication online, that's a huge no no, shouldnt' of done it. I took the first pill, now I'm bracing myself for some awful reactions. Oh what a day this will be.

I've taken HCT (along with an ace inhibitor) for 5 years. Absolutely no side effects. I don't even find that it makes me pee any more than I ever did. I did have trouble when a doctor actually gave me 3 (THREE!!!!) times the dose I should have been on. When a second doctor discovered it, he had to wean be down to the proper dose (12.5) and during that time I was told to rest and NOT SWEAT!!! Two weeks of having to avoid sweating! Crazy. Anyway, the 12.5 dosage doesn't affect me at all, and I'll be willing to bet you'll do great on it.
IrishLass
Oops, that should have said "wean me down", not "wean be down". smile.gif

Thanks TLassie,

that's what I'm on too 12.5mg, said it's a really low dose and might not even do anything.

I really appreciate responses...makes me feel better and I'm not freaking out as much.

Dear'moozie'

I was put on a diuretic many years ago.I was scared stiff to take the thing but eventually did as my legs had started to swell with retained water. It did the trick. And bananas are great to take.I always have one a day as enjoy them so much..

Don't forget to stay away from caffeine and sugary foods. Also avoid salt as these can raise blood pressure levels.

So take your medicine and do not worry.it is very important to lower your BP.

All the Best

tell me girls, will taking a water pill help reduce the puffiness i sometimes feel on occasion? no kidding, some mornings i wake up and feel swollen.

mooz, i hope all the meds/pills are working magic for you! my mil (age 75) takes a H2O pill but she doesn't seem to make frequent runs to the bathroom like many of you have indicated happens. wonder why that is; maybe she doesn't take-in enough water?
moozie
Thank you Joyce and angel,

Means so much that you are taking the time to respond and make me feel better. I took over an hour ago and feel okay, except for being a bit anxious about it. I hope one day I wont'have to take any of these meds.

Thanks again,

Moozie

Mooz....I have been on the hydro and two other meds for severe hypertension for going on 27 years. I have had absolutely no side effects! I have to be on the meds. My BP is very high without: 220/126. So, there was NO alternatives for me as my BP was uncontrolled without meds and was at stroke level. If I am off for just one week, my BP goes skyrocket!! So, give it a try. The hydro is the "old" standard of BP meds. That is what the Cardiologist told me.

Take Care!

CGirl,

THANK YOU !!...i'm starting to finally think i have to come to a point of acceptance with the way my body is aging. So many people have to take medication. Like my doc said, it's like diabetes and needs to be controlled. But for me, it's always the end of the world. I have to look at life differently now and start realizing this is they way things are.

Thanks again,

Hugs,

Hi
I take Benicar which is a combination drug and has the 12.5 that you are speaking of. Absoultley no side effects at all and believe me, if there were, I would be the first one to get them.
