I am going to be faced with an endometrial biopsy. I have heard horror stories. Can anyone enlighten me with how painful this is. I am thinking I am going to ask for a D&C at the same time, so they put me out. Then I know I will be faced with hysterectomy? complete or partial. I am almost 51, bleeding is so erratic. But I just am not really excited about being thrown into a surgical menopause. If perimenopause is so horrid, I can't imagine what an instant surgical menopause would be.

Any help or suggestions is so appreciated.

Don't get too far ahead in your thought processes. I have had an endometrial biopsy and it is over so fast I couldn't imagine being put under anesthesia for it. I will not sugar coat it-it is uncomfortable, but over in a flash. Taking a xanax or valium prior may do the trick.

I agree. Take one step at a time. I just had a endometrial biopsy and it was uncomfortable but was over pretty quick. To me it wouldn't be worth being put under for.

Timebomb: I'm not sure why you're jumping to the conclusion that you will need a hysterectomy. There are other ways to address the erratic bleeding. It is highly unlikely that you have cancer. I know when you hear the word "biopsy," you automatically think there's a high probability you have cancer (I know I did), but in reality it's pretty normal to have the crazy bleeding at this time of life. If for some reason they are unable to do the endo biopsy, then you can always get the d & c instead, but for most it is such a quick in-office procedure that in my opinion you should try that first. As long as they find no abnormal cells, they can treat the bleeding with hormones, endometrial ablation, or d&c. Just take it one day at a time. I know how you feel because I've been there, but statistics are on your side that everything is ok.

Oh .. and also just wanted to say that you can't request and receive a d&c when you are there for your gyn visit. It's a surgical procedure that gets done in a surgical center or hospital because of the anesthesia. It would probably be a couple of weeks before they could schedule you, so it's must simpler to have the endo biopsy during the office visit.

Hi,

My daughter just had an endometrial biopsy done and she said it was a bit uncomfortable but nothing too painful. It just took a few minutes and was over before she knew it. The doctor was very kind and informed her of what he was doing to make her feel more relaxed. I'm sure it will be a relief to get the results.

I don't remember mine being that painful at all. It was over so quickly-so please don't worry about it. It wasn't much different than a smear test in my opinion. I think maybe it could be more painful if you had never given birth but I think it is the thought of it more than anything which freaks people out .
Certainly don't go looking for a D&C if it isn't unecessary! Come back and tell us once its done about how it wasn't that bad after all smile.gif
