Someone might remember that a year ago I had a bad PAP - low grade dysplasia - no cancer. So, I had the LEEP procedure done. The following PAP came back ASCUS and after examination my doctor thought it was due to the cervix still healing from the LEEP. He saw no need for concern. I just had my second PAP and that came back as ASCUS again. I talked with him today and he feels it could still be the healing process or low estrogen. He was not concerned but I am going in next week for another colposcopy so he can look again. He said that ASCUS is actually a question mark that just needs an answer. I know I should not be overly concerned, but this has thrown me emotionally yet again - just one more thing hanging over me. I am past menopause. About 20 years ago I went through this and had cryosurgery done with fine PAPS until last year.
Has anyone experienced this? Anyone with some encouraging experience or insights? Really would appreciate the reassurance.
Thanks, Dor

Dear Dor,
I'm so sorry you have to suffer through the worry of this again. I've had cryosurgery and one bout of ASCUS, but was cleared after six months.
My understanding (and I'm by no means an expert) is that the ASCUS designation is incredibly vague and just means some type of abnormal cells. It's the mildest designation as there are degrees of ASCUS that can mean more suspicious findings, so that part of this should be positive.
What can cause the abnormal cells? Tons of things, which is probably why your doctor isn't in panic mode. It can be caused by yeast infections, irritation of any kind, as well as things like HPV or herpes. Yes, it can be a pre-cancer indicator as well, but don't go there yet as that's statistically low.
Still, it's hard not to worry and I feel for you in all the doctor's tests and visits. Such a pain!
Hugs to you and try to stay positive. Update us. O.K.?

Ahhh, thanks so much ladies. It means so much to have your kind notes and support. I will let you know what I find out. Hopefully the LEEP took care of things and this is just some minor issue. Thanks again for all of your caring. I am just going to be nervous for another week!

Had the colposcopy done today. The doctor said he didn't think he saw anything wrong at all. Did a small biopsy just to be sure, so have to wait on that again. And then redo pap in six months. Sure would like to get this behind me. Would love to hear from others who have "been there, done that". Thanks ladies for being there. Really appreciate it so much. Dor

Dear'Dor'
So sorry but must have missed your previous post.Have never had a colposcopy' but it does sound like you went through a lot.
Do hope that the results from the biopsy are negative and you will be able to put all this behind you and relax a little.
You are in my Prayers tonight, dear Sister
God Bless
