I've had heart palpitations for almost 7 years and they still freak me out!! I started out with the pause and thump and now I have so many different things happening. Now I'm getting the racing heart out of the blue, flip flopping and the irregular heart beats. I'm trying sooo hard to not let them bother me but right now they are winning. I need someone to tell me this is all normal!!

Virginia,

This is all NORMAL!!! So many of us are experiencing these horrible palpitations, and I know just how difficult it is to remember that they are harmless (I'm assuming you've been checked-out by your doctor, and they found nothing wrong). When we get a break from them, we can think about it rationally and know that they are completely benign. When they are actually happening, well that's a different story, they're still so frightening. I'm sorry you are going through this, however; I'm here to tell you that I can relate only too well!

Hugs,
Karen

Listen to Karen, she KNOWS what she is talking about. I'm another palpette and I absolutely still get freaked out with them too, every single time. I was free of them for a few months, but they are back.
I hate to say it's normal, it sure doesnt' feel like it. But hang in there, I'm sure you have been to the docs to get checked out.

Hugs

Can I relate to you virginia. I've had all sorts or things happen over the last 15 years and I have PAC's, PVC's, and sinus tachycardia.

Although many of us have these terrible heart palps, I strongly suggest that you that you should always have them checked out by your doctor as they can be serious. It will give you some peace of mind too if you have had them checked out and they are indeed benign.

Hugs,
Karen

Hi Virginia -

Are you taking any Magnesium? You can take up to 1000mg a day to help with the heart symptoms...

Thanks for the replies ladies!! I agree that when your not experiencing them or at least only having a random thump once in awhile you can tell yourself it's fine and move on with your life but as soon as they start happening more and more often it's a whole different story. When I first started having the skipped beat I would get a couple a minute. I went to the ER and I was hooked up to whatever you call the machine that records what your heart is doing. After a few hours they unhooked me and sent me home. On the papers they sent home with me it said irrregular heart beat caused by caffeine an alcohol. I stopped both immediatley and after awhile the thumps for the most part did go away. Fast forward a few years and while I was exercising my heart decided to beat erratically for about 10 minutes. I called my doctor and he had me rush in 5 DAYS LATER!! When I went in they did a chest x-ray, blood work, ekg and then I went for a heart ultrasound. Everything checked out ok but no explanation of why it happened. I found this website and read many many posts about heart palpitations and felt much better. I can go months without much more then a flip flop here and there and can forget about those but then (like right now) I start getting them daily and they are never the same. Now I'm starting to get the racing heart for a few seconds at a time and the feeling like me heart wants to start beating erratically again. I can change positions and it stops but I keep waiting for it not to stop.

I went and bought Magnesium last night and goggled how much a person can take and all that did was make me nervous about taking them. It said if you get too much magnesium it could cause a irregular heart beat. Well that isn't what I'm looking for right now!!

Again thanks for your replies!! It helps so much to hear that other people are dealing with the same thing.

((((Virginia))))

I can certainly feel for you and sympathize. I was diagnosed in my late teens with Mitral valve prolapse. It took me years to get used to the fact that my heart was going to do wacky things and that I was not in danger of dying from it. After college, it basically started getting better and I had very few symptoms.

Fast forward to my 40s and Peri. Suddenly my heart symptoms are back with a vengeance. And not so much the skipped and extra beats I had learned to deal with before. Now I am having the racing heart thing. And it will go on for hours some times (probably due to the fact that I have made myself panic about it)

It is a scary thing, but, as you have been checked out, I would not be concerned about it (I know, easier said than done) I know how hard it is (since I am working on convincing myself again too) but it will eventually happen - not where it may be comfortable for you, but where at least you won't freak out every time it happens. I keep telling myself I was able to do it in the past, so I can do it again!

Best of luck to you (and I have to go read what you were saying about Magnesium) I have never heard it can cause an erratic heart beat.

Papitations sent me to the ER a couple of months ago. All my test came back normal including ekg blood work ,xray, ultrasound ,thyroid, heart monitor .. all normal. But the cardiologist put me on a beta blocker. I am taking a very small dose (12mg metroprolol) but no palps at all now. I am worried about taking any med, but my DR. said it would protect my heart and is a good med.

I Hope so.
Still suffering with lots of other meno symptoms though.
I'm tired of all this stuff.....

OMGosh I guess I shouldn't be complaining about having my heart race for a few seconds now and then!! I get use to one thing and deal with it pretty well for the most part and then BAM something new happens and put me into a panic again. My heart has settled down again so I haven't taken any Magnesium pills yet but I did go buy some just in case. Now I have to get over being nervous about taking them!! I'm not good at taking any pills.

Bootsy Is that 12.5 mg? Do you take it once or twice a day. I used to take it twice a day. Then quarter that for while/hard to cut those tiny pills. Got off it last July. But wondering if I might need to go back on again. For elevated bp and heart rate/palps. Thanks, Pam

ohwhy
I recently started having weird heart things (what feels like skipped heart beats) a few weeks ago. So far, I have had 2 EKGs and blood work for magnesium, chol. I had had some weird chest pains 2 yrs ago so I had all the heart tests back then which were normal, EKGs, holter moniter, stress test, echocardiogram (and I think an xray with iodine...my memory is horrible now & it used to be excellent)...anyway, these palpitations, if that is what it is freak me out too. I am set to have another stress test this month and again the holter moniter next month (apparently there are a lot of people getting monitered or something). Tonight I was lying on the couch and I felt a slight jabbing pain in my right breast...all of this stuff ***** & really scares me. I used to come here 2 yrs ago when I had so many weird things happening to my body, but it all got better over time (that time I think was from fertility hormones wacking everything out). Now, I think I am really starting peri (I'm nearly 49), cuz I am feeling slight hot flashes. The heart thing is really nerve wracking. I feel it being weird all the time and worse when I am trying to go to sleep. It even wakes me in the night. Do all women experience this? I cut out the caffeine, alcohol (not that I drank much anyway) and started walking. I've been taking magnesium for a while, but now someone is saying even that will cause palps?
I'm trying to finally take care of myself now...I want this bad chest feeling to go away!!

The first thing I want to say is I'm the one that said something about magnesium causing heart palps and I read that on some website about magnesium. I have read many ladies on this site talk about magnesium helping them with heart palps so on one of those days my heart was acting up I decided to go buy some. I didn't know how much a person should take so I googled magnesium and found alot of information about how much to take and it did say magnesium helps with heart palps. My mistake was to google side effects of too much magnesium and that is when I read that too much can cause heart palpitations. I think it would be a good idea to listen to the ladies on here that have experience with magnesium and not a chicken like me that still hasn't taken any because my fear of taking almost anything!!

What you decribe your heart doing sounds like what I started out having and EVERYONE that I talked to said those are VERY VERY normal and that most people do have them but most people don't feel them. When I told my doctor what my heart did he didn't even think any testing was needed. I went back at another point because my heart started doing some other things and then he did run all the tests and everything was fine. I'm still not sure how a heart can do all these weird things but still be considered normal though!!

I totally agree with you and wish all the bad chest feeling would go away!!

This is one part of peri I think I hate the most. I get a few days with just a few that come and go or like today where they just keep on going! I've tried cutting out tea, coffee, alchohol etc but I get them regardless. I didn't find magnesium to be much help either as I still got them although did notice I had less once I stopped and wondered if there was a connection but as I still get them so it doesn't matter. I've had an echo and loads of ECG's and a 24 hour holter monitor - although I haven't had the results of that yet, everything else was fine thank heavens!

I am so grateful to have this site as I don't know anyone else that is going through this and you ladies always help to ease my mind. Bless you all!

Magnesium as with any VITAMIN or MINERAL, taken improperly or by someone who eats many magesium rich foods..may have issues..also some people already have heart issues. Too much VITAMIN E can be deadly for anyone with a heart condition of any kind. Just because its natural doesn't make it safe. You need to use common sense. saying that remember that if one person reacts badly to a drug or vitamin, its generally posted as a "side effect" this has no barring on how it will effect you. I NEVER took Magnesium before EVER....and I had the worse heart palpitations of my life, thought it was a heart attack and tossed 4 packs of smokes in the trash, quit cold turkey after 26 years because it scared the ^&%$ out of me.... ever since I have been on HRT, and my vitamins along with CHEALTED Magneisum, my paliptations have went from almost all the time to about 20%----its all trial & error......
