I went thru chemo and radation and reconstricsion 3 years ago and of course after all of this my periods stopped and now all of the sudden I am starting to have hot flashes and break out in a sweat during the day or night. I get leg craps and not sleeping the best. Why after 3 years has this started all over again? I am confused. Any advice would be helpful! Has anyone else gone thru this?

I am pretty sure it is hormones, dear. Much to my surprise, I had a cycle after 11 months and a few days. The night sweats are back, I am hobbling around this morning because of a leg cramp/hip joint pain,
and I am waking briefly during the night. I thought I saw the light at the end of the tunnel after not having a cycle for so long. I did, but it was an oncoming hormone train. laugh.gif

I have not had a period in over 3 years and still have not had one but why now hot flashs in the middle of the night and during the day/ Does chemo have anything to do with it and why now I am so confused? I did not think this would happen after 3 years?

Dear'CAULSES'

Have no idea what could be causing this but just wanted to say I hope you feel better soon.Have you had a Gyno. check recently to get your hormone levels because it does sound hormonal.

I don't know if you are a candidate for hormone supplements, because of your cancer but there are lots of Herbal Supplements that could help.

Personally,I have come to the conclusion that anything is possible in this stage of our lives. For example, although on HRT for many years do get the occasional hot sweats and insomnia.

God Bless
And please keep us posted

Caulses: I honestly don't know if chemo has anything to do with the night and day hot flashes that you are experiencing now. I hope that someone on this board will be able to answer your question. Joyceveronica's suggestion of having your hormone levels checked might shed some light on this. I do hope you feel better soon.

Hi there, I have a friend that had a hysterectomy earlier in her life and when it was time for the change, she had hot flashes and a few other symptoms. I have heard that you can experience hot flashes and the like even if you have had medical intervention. Maybe this is what is happening with you?

I hope that you are feeling better soon.

It also appears that our bodies go thru hormone level "adjustments" even during the post years. There are women who will have a resurgence of hot flashes periodically all the way into their 70s. Other than being uncomfortable and inconvenient I doubt it is anything more than this. However it is never a bad idea to discuss these things with your doctor, just to rule out any other possibilities.

Caulese, I have been wondering the same thing. I am 2 years through menopause and the hot flashes stoped just about a year ago which was one year after my last period. Now, recently they have started up again along with all the othe unpleasent symptoms such as uncontrollable crying, and roller coaster emotions. So, it looks like they can start again even after not having a period for a couple years. I am very disappointed. Good luck to you.

Floater is right - I am also 3+ years post-menopausal, and most of the horrid peri symptoms are GONE.

However, every once in awhile I have a stretch of hot flashes... or a stretch of insomnia... or weepiness. These don't last long, thank God. I think that even in post-menopause, there are hormonal shifts and adjustments, just not as intense as they once were.

I have a friend who went through meno in her early 50's, used HRT for awhile and successfully weaned off it. Now she is 68 and is having what her Dr. calls secondary meno - her hot flashes have returned with a vengence so she just went back on HRT. Her words, " Why suffer? I'll just get my yearly mammo." (This is a woman who is now retired, but spent her career as a nurse in a children's oncology hospital.)
