Have any of you read anything that explains why a woman might have more temperature control problems at night compared to daytime ?

I am supplementing estradiol. They have nearly completely eradicated my hot flashes. Those that do break through are greatly reduced in severity. I've noticed though that most occur overnight, I would say between 4am and my waking time, which ranges from 7am to 8am. What I find most odd is that they stop when I get out of bed, even before I've reapplied the estradiol. I would think I'd have more temp control problems when I'm exerting myself, not when I'm just lying in bed !

I'm mystified, and hoping that someone has read some kind of explanation and can point me to it.

I really can't say why it happens...but mine are almost always at night...I have some during the day...but I usually wake up in a sweat in the night...and then continue to have hot flashes until morning on and off. I was wondering the same thing honestly. I would love to know why it is that way as well.

Thanks

I don't know why it's worst at night but I wanted to add this---it gets better. I had horrible night sweats and hot flashes for about 5 or 6 months. I had horrible insomnia. (Told doc and he just grinned. grrrr.....) Then all of the sudden it stopped. Don't know why but I sure am glad it did stop. I didn't take anything for it, but found that taking my dose of calcium before I went to bed not only helped with acid reflux but the hot flashes too. Don't know why it helps but seemed to be better. It didn't help my insomnia tho.

I started taking a calcium pill with my breakfast, I'll switch it to my evening snack and see what happens.

Very good question -

I do have some hot flashes during the day, but nearly every single night, just after I start to nod off, I always get a whopper and start sweating like a pig (okay I know, pigs don't sweat) This has nothing to do with the amount of covers on or anything as I often read (laying on my stomach with the blankets pulled nearly over my head) for at least an hour before I go to sleep.

I know that I read something about this.....

My meno brain can't remember it of course, but at night, this is when the body regenerates. Cortisol levels drop and insulin does it's thing. I think this is what triggers more hot flashes. All the hormones shift gear at night, so once we hit peri/meno these are the signs.

I take my estrogen twice daily, once in the morning and once before bed, that has (in my case) fixed the problem.

one reason is that at night you are more of things.during the day you might not think about it that much, and i am sure the fact that things are SUPPOSED to be calmer has something to do with it.

Could have something to do with circadian rhythms. Body temperature drops at night and as our personal thermostat goes wonky at menopause, could be an exaggerated response in relation to that.
Like Juliann remember reading about it, but can't remember where. Sorry haven't got the scientific data but just google circadian rhythms.

Dear Sandra Smith'

I have been on HRT for many years but will have the occassional hot flush. It usually rears its ugly head when I am very anxious or sometimes for no particular reason. It also could be any time of day or evening but Thank God not at night

I too have no explanation for this

Warm Wishes
Elizabeth
P.s. Of course we could all go around singing "Come on baby light my fire"
Tried that once and my eldest son said Mum' I do love you but I think you have major issues!"

Hmm...interesting... I've been taking my calcium at night this week and haven't been having the night sweats and no hot flash...wondering if there is a connection too...

I think its a vasomotor issue related to why some who have anxiety as a primary symptom experience worst symptoms in the early AM. It might be related to the body's need to "cortisol up" in the morning and overproduction of adrenaline. I too have them the worst between 4 and 6 so therefore I am sweating and outside walking the dog at 6 am in 17 degree weather - yes, meno is sooooooo pleasant!!!!!!!!!
