I've read some posts where people say their hot flashes come when periods are gone. I'm wondering is it normal to be constantly hot, or have hot flashes when you're still having periods? I seem to be hot all the time and at night I wake up a little bit sweaty and kick covers off. Usually takes awhile and then I cool off and cover myself back up. I'm still having periods.

Anyone experience that? Just want to make sure hot flahses aren't just for those who are missing periods.

Yes, what you have seems all part of the peri/meno journey.

I think that hot flashes are just a signal that oestrogen levels are compromised. I had mild hot flashes before my periods stopped and 6 months after I stopped menstruating, they became more like forest fires than hot flashes! Lol. Now they have gone back to being mild and very bearable. Get that industrial sized fan ready for when they really take hold!

I suffered with hot flashes for 3 years before periods stopped. I didn't get them everyday, they would come in spells, and usually went away before and during a period, and would return afterwards. Eventually they became by indicator as to when I was going to have a period....if the flashes stopped, I knew one was coming.

It is perfectly normal, just your body letting you know that menopause is coming.

I don't get what you'd call hot flashes during the day, but get extremely hot at night. I wake up, burning up and sweating, and throw the covers off. Then get chilled and pull them over me again. It gives my husband a good laugh!

I get hot flashes and night sweats and I am still having my period...having night sweats was what made me realize what was going on with me. I thought i was losing my mind until I connected it all together.

I haven't had a period in two months now and my first ever hot flashes started immediately after the end of the last one and are still a daily occurrence. Still no sigh of a period, though. I guess we all do it differently.

I had my first night sweats last month on day 2 of my period. I had two that night that woke me up sweating! I have hot flashes also, not very often though. So I guess, this is all just part of the journey, Fun Huh??!

So I am normal! Thank you all ladies! I just feel hot all the time. But worst of it is at night when I wake up at 230am. Last night (or should I say this morning) I woke up at 230am hot. Got up to go to the ladies; and mostly to cool off, came back and tried to go back to sleep with covers off. Got up, turned down termostat. Tossed and turned until 430 when it seemed just then the hot flash broke! Started to cool down and had to pull covers back on. Was just starting to feel drowsy again when at 5am the alarm went off and was time to get up.

This is just not right!

Nope, it kinda ***** doesn't it.

What happens to me a lot is on the other end of sleeping from you Nancy. When I am going to bed, I like to read for awhile and am just fine. Then more often than not, just after I turn the light off and am ready to nod off - boom, someone lit a fire inside of me.

AND - If I had a nickle for every time the covers were on/off during the night I would be one rich lady

LadyNRed, I also experienced intermittent hot flashes and night sweats while I was still menstruating. I feel I got some improvement from supplementing progesterone ... estradiol is really the hot flash hormone, but I think by supplementing progesterone I brought all of the hormones back into better sync. This was exemplified by tighter cycles, I was having irregular periods and after I started supplementing P they became more regular, sometimes completely normal (29-31 days).

I also got much better sleep while using progesterone.

So you might want to try progesterone supplementation. I use ProGest individual packets. You can buy them online.

You might also consider low-dose estradiol supplementation. My new gynecologist specializes in menopause and she said that even for women whose estradiol isn't necessarily low, supplementing a little bit can mitigate the hot flashes.

I haven't had a period for 2and half years and the hot/cold flushes are getting worse. They were mild during peri now I'm battling to find something to control them.

Oh Choco, me too, me too. I would have short bouts of them during Peri, but nothing like now. I haven't had a period for about 2 years FYI. I have found that magnesium supplements seem to be working for me (or, it is a big coincidence). I had been taking one tablet a day, and then started on 2 a day a couple of weeks ago when things were really getting bad for me. Although I am still having hot flashes, they don't seem to be as severe.

If hot flashes become too bothersome (or debilitating !), the gold standard treatment is estradiol supplementation. You can do low dose and get great effect, check out the BHRT section of the forum, we discuss estradiol in there.
