Hi Gia
I used to be an avon lady and still wear lots of that. Lately I have been into Clinique and Lancome. Its hard to find the right foundation but I like Clinique and Revlon. I buy the stuff that's water based as I can not wear oil because my skin somethimes act up. (will I ever grow out of zits?). For mascara I still love L'oreal (Black)and for nails I love OPI. My eyes are green so I tend to wear violet, burgundy or grey eyeliner. Brown makes me look tired and Black is just too harsh on me. I've found that wearing a peach eyeshadow and violet or burgundy eyeliner really makes my eyes pop. As for lipstick I think I have tried just about every cosmetic line out there! My present favorite is maybelline extreme moisure in petal. It's a pinkish red color that really brings out my eyes. The only thing I find though is that although maybelline may be cheaper than some of the other brands it wears off fast. Whereas my Clinique and Lancome and even Avon I can go for hours without having to reapply no matter what I'm doing. JMO. Fun thread!
Have a good night

Lets see now..... I didn't really start wearing makeup until my late 30's...old hippie dontcha know

BUT NOW.....I am having such fun purchasing and wearing makeup. I have my own makeup consultant.....a 'gal' that I work with always looks amazing so she has been helping me to buy the 'right stuff' I love buying makeup with a friend that will be honest with how I look.
I don't wear mascara...so I use
Lancome black eye liner.....a little on the top and just a dab on the bottom lid. Plus I have been turned on to
Smashbox Under Eye Brightener to illuminate my eyes. A wee bit in the corner of my eyes and some on the bottom...really makes me 'appear' awake!

I use
Lancome Concealer for those red marks that STILL appear from time to time.

My makeup consultant has turned me on to
Smashbox.....and I LOVE IT!!
Smashbox photo finish foundation primer - excellent!!
I use the
Halo hydrating perfecting powder on my entire face. It is a powder foundation that is glorious! My first ever foundation and I am in love. NO unnatural goopy or thick foundation for this Meno-Mama.
My blush is
Lancome, and my lipstick is
Revlon ColorStay Overtime. Excellent product! You just need to add the gloss from time to time as the colour stays on ALL day.
Occasionally I use
Smashbox Lip Enhancing Gloss.

This is fun, and informative, since I'm finding my drier skin requires a change in foundation so I'm looking for one.
Mascara: Maybelline "Full n Soft I've used many, from drugstore to high end, including Lancome Defincils and Estee Lauder's 'More Than Mascara'. I finally went back to Maybelline "Full n Soft". It never clumps, or goes on gloppy, or flakes, and even lasts longer than the more pricey ones I've used. It also consistently gets good ratings on MakeUpAlley. And it won't break the bank.
Eyeliner: Various. Currently just wetting a stiff angle fine brush and using Bobbie Brown's shadows as eyeliners. I like BB gel eyeliner, but it quickly seems to dry out after a month and get very hard to apply, making it unuseable with much of it left, and it's pricey. I've noticed many reviewers complain about the same thing, so I won't be repurchasing.
Eyeshadow: Bobbie Brown It's almost impossible to find good matte eyeshadows, and the shiny, shimmery ones accentuate the wrinkles and look awful on us mature women, and BB has a good selection of matte eyeshadows. Also, Urban Decay has some matte ones, but not much selection.
Eyeshadow Primer: Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion This is without a doubt the best primer to keep every cheap eyeshadows from creasing and fading. I found out about this from the rave reviews on MakeUpAlley, and it truly is amazing. My eyeshadow lasts all day without settling into the creases. I had tried many, many others and none works as well as this.
Blush: Studio Gear Gel Blush Love this. Studio Gear is a line carried at Ulta Stores. The blush is not shiny, is not drying nor greasy, and stays in place.
Foundation: Like Gia, still looking. I need recommendations for a good foundation for dry, mature skin that covers well without silicones that will make my complexion look smooth and minimize the dark spots. Bare Minerals is too drying and shiny, and many of the liquids are full of silicones, which feel good, but are also quite drying for my skin. Currently using Paula's Choice foundation (so-so) and also Studio Gear (not bad)
Concealer: Don't use anymore. They are either too drying or too greasy and don't have staying power. I would use one if anyone has found one that works well on mature, dry skin.
Nail polish: Don't use.
Lipstick: Bare Escentuals Ripe Fig, Revlon Colorstay, Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick. Not really loyal to any particular one.

For my 50th birthday my daughter took me to Nordstroms to buy me some foundation... lol!! I guess she thought I needed some help in that department!
At any rate, we settled on Virtual Skin by Prescriptives, along with Magic Powder also by Prescriptives. Having never worn foundation before, because I had never really found anything that I liked, I must admit: this stuff is quite wonderful! I'm hooked now and splurge and buy it myself!

Sariah,
The mineral makeup I use is not drying or shiny, nice texture.
Dermablend cover up is good for under eye circles, neither greasy or drying.
Youngblood eyeliner pencil is the best I've used, purrrfect!

All of the above! I have some very dry areas and really not so great looking skin, and the virtual skin seems to make an improvement!
My daughter who is 20 and having a terrible time with acne uses it as well. It has done a great job with coverage. Of course her formula is totally different than mine. Mine is more for drier skin and other mid-life skin issues...!! They seem to have formulas that accomodate all skin types and will work with you to find the best for you.

Sariah,
I have MMU from ***. The color names can be confusing, but the prices and product are nice. Also you can buy samples really cheap and email with questions.
The pencil from youngblood is so nice because the color is a dark gray which I prefer to black (although they have black) and the texture is nice. It glides on and stays put for me. Lots of pencils drag over more mature skin. If you check youngblood's site, they have a store location search feature. The products are generally sold in beauty shops or spas. The lipsticks are creamy and feel really good. They use very high-quality ingredients. ***

Bella,
Thanks for the info. I've have noticed that too--the liner pencils dragging over our crepey lids. I'm not happy with any of the ones I have, so I'm happy to know about the Youngblood and plan to buy one. I also like gray, black looks harsh and clownish on us mature women.
I will also check out that mineral makeup. Thanks again!

Lots of people were wondering about foundation, and what I've discovered is that I don't like foundation at all--instead I use tinted moisturizer. My favorite is Maybelline; it goes on really easy and gives just a tiny bit of coverage. It also is great for hydrating dry skin. I also use a little Cover Girl or Maybelline cover stick around my nose. I love every blush I've ever tried (as long as the color isn't too dark--I have fair skin) and I change it all the time for a little variety!

It's Mineral Veil by Bare Esscentials. I use the no color version. I am not a fan of mineral makeup at all (it made me look positively spooky!) , but the clear version seems to make my skin look flawless.

Wonderful , I always love to hear new idea's. I will probably check out some of the suggestions, as I am a makeup a-holic. Being in the beauty industry (hair stylist), I have worked with "skincare" gal's over the years.
First, I must explain that I have "freckles", although you probably wouldn't "see" them because I cover them up.
So, I use a very strong concealer, dermablend. This can be used for those tough spots that you want to vanish away. For foundation I use a line called "True", they are like a mineral makeup. They also have blushes, I use a cream blush in "nude", along with some "Cargo" for a hint of alumination. I use a bronzer most of the time.
For eyeliner, I've been using a black pencil from "Glow minerals", it's nice and stays put. And for lipstick, I have bags of every thing and am always trying to find that one shade that will change my life

Hi,
Has anyone tried the new "Organic wear" makeup by Physicians Formula? I just got some and like it. I like that it's natural, and free of harsh chemicals, parabens and preservatives. I have very sensitive skin, and so far, so good. I like the tinted moisturizer and blush. I get my lipstick at the health food store, Gabriel, it's also all natural, and the color looks great.

What a great thread. I work is the cosmetic dept. at a pharmacy chain, & have the opportunity to try a lot of different cosmetics. These are my most favorites:
Mascara: Covergirl volume exact, its plastic bristles never clump. Loreal Lash tube technology, because even though it is one of those 2-step mascaras, it cleans up very easily. The mascara slides off your lashes in pieces rather than smudging all over.
Foundation: Almay smart shade. It comes out of the tube white, but adjusts to your natural skin tone. It is a minimal coverage foundation, very light. Evens out skin tone beautifully.
Powders & blush: Physician's formula mineral pallettes. I use w/big brushes, not the little one the compact comes w/. Also, Physician's formula has long staying power. Lasts all day!
Liner: Unfortunately my favorite has been discontinued, so I'll have to find a new one. Was using Loreal Kohl pencil in Black sable.
Shadow: Revlon colorstay quads & Loreal.
Lipstick: Too many to name

As I have gotten older, I've tried to avoid the temptation to add lots of makeup because it can look really aging if you aren't careful. Now that you know my "less is more" philosophy, here are my faves:
Tinted Moisturizer: Neutrogena Healthy Skin. Sheer, and loaded with anti-oxidants, with SPF30.
Pressed Powder: again, Neutrogena Healthy Skin (the one in the square gold compact). This can look a little artificial at first (like for 5 minutes) but after that it sinks right in and looks very natural. Sheer coverage that lasts for my entire work day!
Eyeshadow, Blush and Lips: I am a fan of Kohl's "American Beauty" palettes, and often buy these after Christmas when they are on sale for $5. My palette contains two shadows (I use the lighter one as a very natural concealer) blush (I like pink) and a rosy pink lipstick
Mascara: I don't use mascara very often, but I'm currently trying Neutrogena Natural Volume and having good luck with it.
Specialty: on days when my roseacea flares up, I add the following to the above list:
Physician's formula mosaic powder, in green, before applying my Neutrogena Healthy Skin pressed powder
Neutrogena 3 in 1 concealer
Dermarest medicated cream for psoriasis (contains salycylic sp? acid, which is a good anti-inflammatory that reduces redness). I apply this most often as a night cream.

I've reached the pinacle of less is more.
I'm into powder now! (My grandmothers are somewhere smiling).
I really like bronzer in the summertime.
I really like the new line of Jane "Be Pure" mineral line. All Natural I think. I'm hooked on the lip balms. Very nice! A touch of color. They don't last a real long time, but they make the lips feel quenched. I haven't had chapped lips all winter!!! (wow!) And they're relatively inexpensive. The clear peppermint is also nice.
I can't wear mascara anymore - I swear my eyelashes have thinned (oh no!).
And, I don't wear eye shadow anymore... Seems to not to blend well.
Does anyone miss Ultima lip stick as much as me???!!! (I'm still morning the loss).
This is fun!!

I have never really worn makeup since i was a teenager....but now that i'm in my mid 40's....I NEED IT.Even though i need it,i still don't wear it because i try to "play down" my eyes and mascara/liner,etc. just makes them more prominent. And i won't wear foundation/blush,etc. since i don't wear makeup on my eyes....
You see,i have 2 different colors of eyes, one is brown and the other is green( i should say one is VERY brown and the other is VERY green).....so if i do wear makeup i end up just looking weird...one eye will look great and the other doesn't.anyone else have this problem?(I hope) and if you do,what do you do?Don't get me wrong,i am not ashamed of my eyes, they make me who i am and i know i'm unique....i just look weird with makeup on them is all...

O.K. Here we go. I love makeup. I used to be asked by my friends back in my 20's to do their makeup before we all went out on a Fri. or Sat. night.

I love to look natural but I realize that we all need a little tweaking so I love what makeup can do.
I'm always looking for the next best thing and like to keep things fairly simple. I have "been there - done that" with the mineral makeups and loved them for a while. I tried both Bare Escentuals and Shear Cover. I began noticing that they made me look dry and cake-y and "made up". I love the show "What Not To Wear", and noticed that Carmindy always used the same spray foundation. I googled it and found out it is Classified Cosmetics ERA Face spray foundation. I was lucky to find a shop not that far from me that carries it and have been hooked ever since. It costs $50 but it lasted a year! I don't use it every single day so it lasts along time for me, and the stuff is amazing! Works on all kinds of skin. Your can go light or build for more coverage. I just took my girlfriend to the shop for her to check it out. She has eczema and very bad dry skin problems. She bought a can and loves it! I find the right kinds of brushes are really important also. Especially the smudge or stiff angle brushes to smudge in the liner/pencil close to your lash line.
The other "new makeup toy" that I love is the Too Faced Bronzed and Beautiful set.
I need to find a better mascara than the Maybelline Great lash that I have been using. I've tried others in the past but they all seem the same to me. And they all leave black raccoon eyes on me by the end of the day. Yuck! And I don't have oily skin. Between PS and Makeup Alley I'll see which one I should try next.

Alisa,
Thanks for sharing, I'm going to check out that spray foundation. I also notice the mineral makeup seems to leave me dry and wrinkled even with lots of moisturizer. And even though I've always had dry skin with no zits, I think it make my pores bigger after using it for several months. I need something that has good cover without drying yet will stay.
As for mascara, I've tried all the expensive and cheap ones and the best is Maybelline Full N Soft. It's highly rated on MakeUpAlley also. It doesn't smudge on my eyes and I love that it goes on without clumps. And it's cheap. I hated paying the high price for the high end ones and finding they clumped and smudged.

There are several Cvs stores that carry a line of makeup by Sally Hansen created w/Carmindy called Natural beauty. There are 5 shade of the spray foundation & it is much less $$$. Also, try Loreal's new double extend mascara beauty tube technology. It has a base you apply 1st, then the mascara over it. It slides off your lashes & doesn't leave any smudging at all.

Great thread,,
I LOVE makeup, and am addicted to lipsticks..have about 60..they are go to thing to purchase if I am having a bad day..
Foundation: Boots No7 in Vanilla (I always get compliments on my skin when I wear this)
Mascara: currently loving Estee Lauder Sumptious
Lipstick: Favorite this week: Lancome Color Design En Vouge (won't repurchase even though I love it as I found out they test on animals) Also love MAC "O"...(animal friendly company)..Boots Botanics lip gloss in loganberry and rosehip also are nice.
Eyeliner: Boots botonics eye liner in dark brown, or avon glimmersticks, in dark brown as well
Oh, my Best, wonderful concealer is Bobbi Brown Corrector in Bisque..(it's the CORRECTOR not concealer) It is wonderful, magic stuff for the dark circles under my eyes and broken cap's around my nosey!
Also love Bobbi Browns eye brightener..I use it not only on my eyes, but check bone as well, for that "I'm so awake and fresh look"
Eye shadow: I play with too many colors to list..
(for those who don't know, Boots is sold in target)

What a fun thread!
Here's my morning line-up:
Regenerist serum and Regenerist eye serum under it all
L'Oreal Visible Lift liquid makeup--I put it on with a wedge sponge and I swear it looks like I'm not wearing foundation at all, but it evens things out beautifully. I tried the minerals also, but they were just too drying for me, and very obvious. I've had lots of compliments (which I never got when I was wearing $40 foundation!!!!!)--even my MIL asks me all the time about it!

YSL stick concealer under the eyes, topped by their Touche Eclat highlighter (one of my FAVORITE products--it's great for a bit of brightening touch-up later in the day)
Estee Lauder Lucidity loose powder in "Translucent"--again, you can't tell it's there but it's a nice finish
Neutrogena powder blush in "Divine Wine"--very fine powder, so it's nice and light
Clinique eyebrow powder in "Wheat"--I am so, so fair that my brows and lashes look non-existent without help
Revlon Colorstay stick eyeliner--I put it on the lash line as opposed to the eyelid, as I have a teeny little skin tag between two lashes that I'm self-conscious about. With the bit of liner, you don't see it at all.
Eyeshadows vary--I have green eyes and sometimes use a khaki green and sometimes a plum color.
Cover Girl Volume Exact mascara--love it!!!!!!!! I've tried the Maybelline Great Lash more than once, as it gets such wonderful reviews, but it does absolutely nothing for my lashes. Weird!
Cover Girl Outlast lip color and gloss. It lasts all day (with gloss touchups) and never comes off on cups, clothes, etc. I absolutely love this product.

I don't care much about makeup brands. I wear a little cover cream, curl my eyelashes, fill in my brows and put on lipstick and that's about it. I look campy in too much makeup and older, definitely!
I guess I like stick makeup the best, foundation and blush, that is: dab, blend in, and you're done.

Love this thread...
Since say late 30's been having a HARD time w/make-up, mainly foundation. For powder I use Coty Loose Powder the most, tried many other brands, and really like it...
Tried bare minerals, and each time I wore it my son said it made me look older, and he was right.
Been taking better care of my skin lately, age will do that, so it looks pretty good naturally, though I love make up. But again, just can't find the right foundation. Everyone just seems to settle into those fine lines, and make them BIGGER.
I have switched over to Gabriel Lipstick, and OMG love it. It is all natural, and makes your lips soooo soft... But then again, I run into the problem of lip color....
I guess I am still stuck...
Every eyeline I use, runs, which I hate too. I have started putting liquid liner on the top lid, but haven't found anything for the bottom...
I have dark brown hair, w/brownish hazel eyes, and medium skin. Part Indian, and I usually end up buying foundation that is too light or too dark...
So any suggestions for foundation brand; lip color and/or eye liner, would appreciate. Wow you would think by age would know make up, but my skin has just changed so much. Now I have just resorted to, moisturizer w/Coty Loose Powder. Okay for everyday wear, but would love something for those rare occassions that we go out...

its weird, my face looks like a blank canvas without makeup, i scare myself!
mascara: maybeline colossall volume express
inside the lower rim of my eye prestige khol soft liner
lipstick: revlon
foundation: age rewind
eyeliner: loreal liquid liner
lipstick: i can't find one that stays on and is moist
powder: i love cornsilk, lately i cannot find it anywhere, it really covers and looks smooth and is cheap
some drugstores have a "if you don't like it, just keep the receipt and bring it back for a refund" i like that option

Becca - Your coloring sounds very similar to mine! I also have dark brown hair with golden brown/hazel eyes. I have medium skin coloring with yellow undertones and found my best match by having a cosmetic consultant at a better department store test through the palette. Do you have a Macy's nearby? They should be able to match your color for any brand there.
Due to my line of work I have to keep my make-up subtle, no 'garish' colors allowed per the dress code. I use:
Foundation - Prescriptives Flawless Skin
Powder - Prescriptives Magic
Blush - Prescriptives Colorscopes Ginger
Eye Shadow - Prescriptives Colorscopes Champagne (lid to brow) & Bean (lid)
Mascara - Prescriptives Lash Envy (Brown)
No eye liner - never could draw a straight line!
Lipstick - L'Oreal Volume Perfect in Shapely Sands (basically my natural lip color, only better)
Nails - Opi Nail Envy (clear) at hands & Opi Cocoa A Go Go at toes..no open toe shoes allowed so it's my secret!

My aunt talked me into trying the new one that Ellen uses. It is terrible! Don't suggest that foundation for one second. It may have worked on Ellen but not on this face!!

Thought I would share that Avon has out a new lip color line where you dial up your color. The pink one is awesome. I would say it is more of a gloss than a lipstick. Very nice if you want to have a shade a bit darker or lighter during the day. It's called spectra color lipstick. I was excited when I got mine today lol!

I'm new here, but thought I'd jump right in and ask about summer foundations...specifically, primers and foundations that won't run off with heavy perspiration, are hypoallergenic, and don't cake or crepe on 50 year old skin!
I don't live in the US, and to get the right colors in hypoallergenic products, I need to order online...so I'd really appreciate advice and BTDT stories!
I'm considering mineral make-up for summer - but some Maybelline I tried looked really crepy and made my skin itch a bit. Is there anybody around my age who likes mineral make-up, and if so, what brands?
I love tinted moisturizer in winter, but summer has me beat! Unfortunately, there are times when some minimal, basic make-up is just about compulsory. Primer helps, but getting a non-irritating one is the problem.
