Hello,

I just joined today and want to see if there are any of you that are bipolar or have a depression disorder that got worse after menopause. I am post 2 years now and my bipolor has made me severly depressed with no hypomania. I still am on many antidepressants and mood disorder drugs but, I am worse and have been depressed for 2 years solid. Its so bad that I cant keep a job more than a day or two. I have been doing the same work for 20 years now, but have severe anxiety with the depression and have been suicidal many times in the past but that and the depresion only lasted a couple weeks before menopause. Now its just the opposite. I am going to try estrogen therapy. I tried it a year ago but I quit taking it because i was so depressed i thought it made me worse. Hard to tell.

I would love to hear from anyone who has these disorders and what happened after menopause.

I'm diagnosed BP...alhtough I think it was a misdiagnosis... Anyway, I'm in peri and things are pretty bad...has gotten worse in the past couple of years... It's difficult enough dealing with the ups and downs but add in vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, dry skin, hair falling out, crying every day, super chronic fatigue, chills, hot flashes recently, and constipation and well let's just say every day that I make it is a miracle...

I wish I had some suggestions other than getting your thyroid, adrenal glands, and female hormones checked out to see where you are in the process and possibly getting supplementation for all of those which is the journey I am on right now...

Best Wishes...

Hi TJ,

I must of hit the wrong thing because the message I was writing went to a quote and now i hit a key on my computer and it lost my message to you. I hope im doing this right.
I hope you get som kind of help I know how badly you feel. I had highs all the time and lows for short periods of time before menopause. Now just horribly depressed. I have not been able to write either I had 2 poetry books published. Last one about a year ago.I have no desire to do that nor anything much else. I am home all week since I had my car repossed, last year and walk a little in the day and try to keep my mind away from feeling this bad. I understand how you feel. Its so bad. I havenet had a manic episode for a year and a half. Only depression. All the psyche meds I take help a little but thats about it. Without a job makes it all so much worse. I have a job for a day or two thne they let me go because I cannot catch on and its the same stuff I have been doing for 20 years now. I just thnak God for my fiance, I would be on the street without him.
I even tried suicide last April. Took over 100 pills my psyche meds and I woke up a day or so later in the hospital.

So, if you get to that point talk to someone or me and it is hard times for us. I dont know why women have to suffer with this. I wish men did so they can understand what we are going through.

Thanks again for sharing your story with me.

My sister is bipolar and 45. YES, things got worse for her. She had so many more bad days than good and cannot see any kind of good in her life right now or the forseable future (even though they are doing just fine!)

Hi

Thank you for that info about your sister. I have no hope and it is hard. I tried suicide last April. I feel for your sister. I am so sorry that she has the same problem as me. If she wants to talk to me about her same issues please let me know. We could offer support to eachother.

Lauri, if you would like to pm me I would be happy to talk if you need to. One of my daycare moms is very open that she has BP and has and continues to share her wealth of info and her entire life with me. She does this unmedicated as they don't work for her. So far she functions well but I can she pain during her bad days. I have had depression issues all my life but cann not take meds because of side effects so I deal with it in other ways. I am so sorry this has taken you to the point of wanting out of life. I am praying you find a successful way to enjoy life and all it's beauty. If you want to talk please feel free to pm me anytime!

Hello Lauri,

Just checking in to say hello. Haven't been on the boards in a few days because I'm pretty down right now. Hope you're feeling much better though!

My dear Lauri

My heart goes out to you.I feel very sorry and worried to hear of your suffering.I have no knowledge of bipolar but have suffered from depression after being diagnosed Menopausal at 39.I was a real basket case, fears, phobias, depression and a feeling of being out of it.Prozac has helped and I still continue to use it.

I also take HRT,which when I first took it upped the anxiety. It takes about six weeks for the body to start adapting to the Estrogen.I used Xanax to zap the anxiety and always have it handy for very bad emotional times.

I am praying that you will get some relief
Please keep us posted

Warm Hugs
Elizabeth
