Hi,

For the past week I've been having bright red rectal bleeding when I have a bowel movement. It's not there everytime, but about 80 percent of the time it is. I had a colonoscopy done two years ago at 50 as a screening and everything was fine except for internal and external hemorrhoids. I have no family history of colon cancer. The doctor suggested I get the internal hemorrhoids rubber banded which I did last year. I did start to have rectal bleeding sometimes before I had this done. Everything seemed good after I had the procedure done. Then in the summer I had some bleeding again. I went back to the doctor and he said there was a small one the just to try to up my fiber, take metamucil, and drink lots of water. I did and things seem to go away. Over the holidays, I ate very poorly and now have the bright red bleeding again. It looks like the type you get with a nose bleed. Now I'm eating lots of fiber, taking the metamucil and drinking water. I'm still bleeding. I've scared by myself into thinking I have colon or rectal cancer. Like I said the bleeding is bright red and not painful. It does drip into the toilet. It seems to start as soon as I start "pushing". Sometimes even before the stool comes out. Have any of you ever had anything similar? Do you think this warrants another trip to the doctor or will he think I'm a hypochondriac (which I probably am)?

Sunny:

I think I would check with my doctor (for peace of mind) since it has been going on for a week. He will not think you are a hypochondriac, you have a valid concern that you need to approach him about. Since you are susceptible to hemorrhoids, it may be just that. Do not strain or push. Please keep us posted.

Bright red blood usually means the source of bleeding is closer to the rectum, since the further up the bleeding is the darker the blood is. It sounds like the hemorrhoids.

I recently posted about 2 herbs that usually help:

1. rutin
2. collinsonia root

Taking both of these you should see a difference within a month.

Hi.
I dont know how much advice I can give. But when I started all this meno. stuff in July 08, I think it was in sept. that I went to use the bathroom and wow lots of red blood. I was freaked out. That had never happened to me ever. Then I wiped and sure enough...I didn't know where it was coming from. So I made an appt. Had a colonoscopy..I had 1 polyp, hemmorid. I am glad I did all that...I have had no bleeding since then. I believe that in the beginning of all my strong symptoms of meno, I had severe diaherra...all day for weeks....I think that had something to do with it personnelly... But Sunny. call dr check in with them...It is always good to see about bleeding...
Hope all is better soon.

That has happened to me periodically (same exact symptoms) and I too freaked out. I had my last colonoscopy in May, 2008 and I was told that I was even bleeding from hemmorhoids during the procedure. My doc assured me that there was nothing to worry about and that I should add fiber to my diet (can't say it has helped although I haven't been bleeding as much but still have bowel problems). She didn't think having any procedures to remove the hemms would make a difference. This gave me great comfort and I hope I can pass this along to you.

However, I would recommend seeing a doc just to give you peace of mind.

Good luck.

I agree with the other two posters...bright red blood is usually from hemorrhoids....dangerous rectal bleeding is usually profuse and dark colored. Still, it's scary to wipe and see blood. I'd check with your doctor just to make sure. We just can't get a break, can we?

Yep, that does sound like a hemmy, but get it checked so you will be at peace.

Hey Sunny,
I think I wrote about the exact thing a few months ago. If the blood is dark and grainy there may be a problem, but if it is bright red-then you might be straining with your bm and something tears. (sorry about being graphic). And hemorrhoids could cause that also.
Try not too worry too much, anxiety causes alot of elimination issues. Our woes and worries and anxiousness always settle in our intestines. I don't know why-but it's the way we're made.
I hope things start healing and you feel better.

Thanks so much for all your responses. I thought perhaps to bleeding would be gone today, but sure enough when I had a bowel movement it was still there. Like I said before it seems to start when I open my bowels. Not to be gross but this morning I went and then about 10 minutes later felt like there was still more. I went again and no blood came out. There is no blood in the stool at all ever, just in the water and on the toilet paper at the beginning of the bowel movement. I do know what people mean about stress. Now I'm so nervous, I'll see blood I can't really relax and wind up straining again.

Another thought came to mind. I was having spotting for a couple of months and my doctor put me on Aygestin (for 21 days to stop it. I had an endo. biopsy first which was fine thank goodness. The spotting stopped and I took the last Aygestin yesterday. Now I should get a period which will "clean me out" as the doctor said. I'm wondering if the Aygestin could cause the rectal bleeding.

I do plan to call the doctor tomorrow. Thanks again for all your support. I do feel better and really think it's probably just a hemorrhoid.

Soak in a warm tub and if you can also use Tuck suppositories. That may stop the bleeding.
