Hey there,
I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this for me. I've been on E and P for about 1 1/2 months now. Last week I got a period (hadn't had one for months), then last night had a whopper bout of the sweats with pounding heart and the panic feeling that woke me in the middle of the night. Needless to say, I didn't get back to sleep at all.
Why would these symptoms return while I'm on hormones??? I know that levels fluctuate, but last night was worse than before I started on them.
Any insight?
Thanks.

Maybe the hormones are finally in your system good and they aren't just what you need. Obviously if it has tossed you in to a period your own body is probably giving you a good dose of hormones too. You should call who ever prescribed them and see if they need to be regulated. As you probably know those things can be signs of Estrogen dominance. I would get it checked out for sure.

My doc prescribed them for me after much consideration. Also, my bloodwork in 07 showed that I was menopausal. It's weird because at first the HRT really stopped the night sweats so I was sleeping much better. Then this happened. I had trouble with Prometrium so I am trying Provera only because I can get it in a lower dose.
It is all very confusing.

I agree with Davinci....I'm sorry you are feeling poorly lately.... It's probably a matter of readjusting your dosage... It takes a while for the hormones be effective for some women, getting the dosage right can be frustrating...You might not be taking enough estrogen or perhaps you need to have your adrenals tested...but I would talk with your doctor and tell them about the symptoms and retest your levels to see where they are now...

Sounds like your E didn't get as high as it should after your period because those symptoms are those of low estrogen. Also, I've noticed that when I ovulate, the P surge from that requires me to use more E.

Hello Manyboys,

I am also on hormones, I have been on them for 3 yrs now. Last year I had only 2 periods the entire year. When I did get a period out of the blue, I did notice that I experienced a few hot flashes, so perhaps the periods brought back some weird chemistry change, then it should normalize, as it has for me.

I think that just because we are on the estrogen doesn't mean that we will never haved weird things happen, it's just that they happen less often???

Do you take the provera every day? Could that be the culprit?? I had to experiment and for a long time I had to stop the P altogether because it made me so PMS feeling. I know each of us is different.

Hope things get better soon for you.

Hey Sariah... I read that same thing in Dr. Vliet's book that some women have to use more estrogen during that time... Those are my two worst weeks of the month! A total nightmare! My estrogen was 60 during that time and it is supposed to be around 150-200 I think... Progestone was 25!

Thanks everyone....

I think what happened was I went from the Provera to Prometrium and that is what brought on the period. Your explanation of a "weird chemical change" during a period makes sense as to why I would get the hot flash.
I am supposed to take the P and E every day, but like you I had a terrible time on the Prometrium at first. My doctor and I talked about it and he suggested that I use less of the P, but with Prometrium the only way to do that is to cut the darned things in half which is next to impossible. That's where the Provera comes in.....I could take that in a smaller amount. But, I still don't like the progesterone and I guess I'm experimenting too.
What are you taking now, if I can ask? Do you take P? Have you found something/amount that works for you?

Hi Manyboys,

Using progesterone is very tricky for me. In the begining, I used it and didn't notice anything, but then I started to react to the P very badly. For me, I feel "drugged" while on it. I feel sluggish and depressed. I even tried squeezing some of the liquid out of the pill so that I could take less (I would prick it with a pin). My doc also suggested provera, but I never tried it.

My doctor said that as long as I am only using the topical estrogel, it was not a big deal to "need" progesterone. I have no idea if she is right about this, but I did get a couple of periods and felt like a cleansing. So, I think I will wait and if I don't have a period for another few months, then I may have to take a round of P just to see if I get a period. My doctor thinks I am crazy in desiring to have a period, but I worry about the uterus lining with only using the E.

I just can't take the P daily, it offsets all the good that I get from the estrogen. I did try a vaginal progesterone and it was in smaller dosage, but that didn't work so well either. I have no idea, I was even thinking of the cream, which is straight over the counter stuff, but heard that it may not protect the same.

Let me know if the provera works for you or how it makes you feel? I guess it's all trial and error.

Hi Juliann,

It sounds like we react the same way to P. I was getting very, very tired and somewhat depressed after awhile on the Prometrium. When I took the Provera I felt fine....I don't know whether it was because it was a very low dose or the formulation of it. I am going to speak to our local compounding pharmacist tomorrow to pick his brain about cream vs Prometrium vs Provera just to get another view on it all.
I definitely do want to have the balance of progesterone with the estrogen so I need to find the right type for me. My doctor tells me that I need not worry about taking the Provera (being that it is partially synthetic) because the amount is so small. It's just that little niggling voice in the back of my head that I need to ignore, I guess. It seems to be the best of all the P's I've tried so far in terms of side effects.
I'll let you know what the CP says tomorrow about the cream...

Cathy,

Seems like a few of us have this response to the P, please let me know what they tell you, I am very curious. Glad to hear that the provera works for you, what mg do you take??? Maybe at my next appt, I will follow up with something! Keep me posted, thanks!
