Ok time to fine tune here. I have been about 8-10 pounds overweight ever since I did fertility treatments about 5 years ago. Or perhaps it was just perimenopause? Or the happiness of finally getting married in my forties and indulging in too much fine dining? What finally helped me get back to my ideal weight was going to a doctor and drinking this healthy protein rice shake thing -- which I now crave -- I drink it instead of having cereal in the morning. It's Dr. Jeffrey Morrison's detox shake (www.themorrisoncenter.com). It has got the full complement of vitamins and enzymes. (It's kind of expensive though.) This doctor made me realize that so called healthy cereal with milk in the morning is really not the best thing for me. Turns out my body didn't like that milk or that wheat/oat combo, nor the raisins or bananas on top either. Becoming attuned to one's food sensitivities is a big issue for feeling energetic and also for weight loss. For me, it was about doing this and following the doctor's orders and cutting out sugar and alcohol and dairy, I lost about a pound a week and am feeling better than I did when I was a kid (so young and healthy, but those snickers bars knocked me out). My husband has a more serious weight problem than I do and he started drinking the stuff because I was -- he went from 242 to 218 in two months. He is totally into this, so am I. If this is too expensive, I hear whey protein shakes in the morning work for many. Also I think Dr. Mercola (check out his website) is onto something when he says that we are all genetically different and should follow the eating pattern that suits our genetics. Some naturally flourish on a more protein/vegetable diet while others are more carbohydrate driven.

Bottom line for me? Eat a hard boiled egg or two instead of a bowl of cereal and milk, better still eat the eggs for lunch and drink a protein shake for breakfast. Kill the alcohol (so hard!). Don't put any sweetener in my morning tea (ouch!) or milk (ok, lemon is almost as good), bread now becomes a rare rare treat. One subsists on good proteins and vegetables. I did this for a month and felt so fantastic!

Now I am on vacation and have lapsed a bit. But I feel the difference. It is not so much the weight but the feeling of pumping energy I miss.

Most of the processed cereals contain lots of sugar. I used to love Corn Chex until I saw how much sugar they contain. If you look at the ingredient list on a box of cereal, the ingredients are listed according to how much of the ingredient is in the product. In most cereals, sugar is listed second. This means that there is a lot of sugar in the product. They also contain high-fructose, another type of sugar.

I wouldn't give up the dairy altogether - just go with fat free or low fat dairy. The calcium is very good for you.

I try to eat more steel cut oats. I do them in the microwave. They have a wonderful, nutty flavor that is so much better, and better for you, than the processed oatmeals. Those 'instant' oatmeals have had all the good nutrition processed out of them.

My downfall is also carbs - I like potatoes any way they can be fixed. As well as white rice (turns to sugar in your body so I try to eat brown), corn, etc. I really notice a difference when I stay away from this stuff.

The "Sugar Busters Diet" is a good one to read. Even carrots have lots of sugar.

day seven for me today. got on the scale this morning and i'm down 4 1/2 pounds. measured and i'm down 1/4" in bust, waist and abdomen. slightly more in hips.

we're still staying faithful to this new way of eating. i think, for me, the battle began between my ears. i had to make up my mind that there really is no other option for me if i want to feel better, which i'm finally beginning to notice is happening little by little... actually, very little by little. it has helped that the family is on board with this, too. i have noticed that i'm not craving junk like i was in the beginning or on any other kind of weight loss program. i've been told my stomach will begin to shrink and it will become easier to get full, which i think has slowly begun to happen.

been trying these smoothies i came up with to help fill me up and for those of you that might be interested, they're quick, easy (my 11 year old dd makes them herself) and pretty filling so here is what we use:

1 banana
handfull blueberries
4 strawberries
1 tangerine (really good for digestive issues)
vanilla soymilk

put in blender and pour in enough soymilk in to cover the fruit mixture and blend. makes about one smoothie. really, really good!! i've been drinking them for breakfast.

if you're constipated, you can sprinkle a bit of wheat germ (odorless and tasteless) on it each time you drink one. it really works to help get things moving down there.

hang in there, girls! it really is do-able, i think... exercise, however, is still another story for me. hopefully next time i post, i will be able to report that i've started walking!!

Good Mooooorning Ladies! hehe!!

I'm still on track! Hubby and I were invited to a brunch this Sunday. I told hubby that I need some more time under my belt before I could face anything that started with "all you can eat" and he was great. We're not going.

Had my melon and blueberries for breakfast. I think it's getting easier. I'm sleeping so much better. I can't believe diet has that much to do with it, but I think it does. I've been on track for a couple weeks, but haven't weighed myself. I can't deal with the scale right now. I'm afraid it wont show a weight loss and I'll get discouraged, so I'm not getting near it!!

We're all the the little engines that could!! WE CAN DO IT!!!

does anyone write down what they eat evryday/?I have started WW a few weeks ago,and have only lost about 5 lbs.total.I really thought I would be more vigilant with myself.Do you think the time of day that you eat have anything to do with weight loss?I am really down in the dumps about this.I have read your posts (many times over and over) and fell connected,I really hoped to be skinnier.Do you think insomnia ,can be a cause or effect .suggestions would be so apprecited.i have about 40 lbs to lose.

Hi ladies!

I know what works for me. RETAIL! Honest to God I have lost 11 pounds since I stated my new job. I can't begin to tell you all the running around I've done. I also cut out my eating out. That was hard. I love going out to dinner with my boyfriend after a long day of work! I think I may try to get into a yoga class. I hear it helps relieve stress and anxiety as well as being good for weight loss. I still try and swim as much as possible as that helps relax me and helps improve my mood if I'm having a bad day. Wow I didn't realize how draining Christmas can be and I didn't even put on the meal this time!

Still have yet to buy those scales, but sure already in a week I have lost some weight. My jeans were more loose today.

Not me. I have been eating everything that is not nailed down. I don't understand it. My Husband is taking me on a caribbean cruise in just 19 days. What am I to do?

I know what it is.. I don't want to go. He is so excited and he's so proud of himself for surprising me with it.. trouble is.. I don't want to go. And why don't I want to go? Because I'm in meno and all I want to do is stay at home and hibernate.

Any get-skinny-quick tips?

I am still trying. Battling the AD appetite. Its rough!! Today I am going to make some veggie soup and try snacking on that late at night. I really have an issue with wanting to eat at night. I try munching veggies, it isn't very satisfying!! Still having trouble eating breakfast too.

Ok, I am not really doing that great. I am drinking more water though!! YAY!!

Insomnia can lead to weight gain.

I suppose it is time to start to journal my daily food intake. Maybe that will help.

((Float))) would it help if you made a menu? Breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner and then just stuck with that? I know for me, I can't allow any options. I have to plan the next day out, and then stick with it, otherwise I'm driving thru Del Taco getting a #1 combo- LARGE!! LOL tongue.gif biggrin.gif

I would love to jump on this bandwagon. I need to lose 15lbs and have needed to lose it for years. Now that I am older, my clothes are fitting strangely. I really think taking off 15lbs would set them right again, LOL. Anyway, I have already jumpstarted my eating or lack of by giving up meat, bread and desserts. This is my 4th day so far and I haven't lost any weight, but have noticed that I'm not craving what I have chosen to give up. I am a sweetaholic and I haven't been craving sweets. This is amazing to me because I can honestly say that I have a habit of eating sweets daily. I feel that I must really want this badly. So, hopefully I will see some results soon. I do exercise approx 45 mins 3 times a week and I am drinking more water. I'll keep you posted!

some of you ladies have mentioned having ravenous appetites, some due to AD's or what have you... the humongous appetite and cravings, i do know something about and it's been something i've struggled with for several years. one thing i read to help curb your appetite is to juice vegetables so i did just that last week and to my amazement, it worked! all i did was put carrots, celery and cucumbers into the juicer, grind it up and drink it down. now, a word of warning: it was difficult to get down, but once it was down, i was good to go and NOT hungry anymore!

for those of you who try it, please let us know if you have success with it.

the elder
Anyone else notice that the more they think about dieting/change lifestyle, the hungrier they feel?

Seems when I let myself eat what I like I don't think of food as often, the minute I think cutting back, It's on my mind constantly!! AARRGGGHHH huh.gif

Congrats to those sticking with this wink.gif

Ok, I did pretty good today! 1200 calories. Drank 5 glasses of water. My worst time is from now until I go to bed. This is the test!! However I am not presently feeling hungry, which is good.

Gz, I don't have a juicer, and not sure I could drink it anyways. Wouldn't it do just as well to eat the celery, cucumber and carrots? I have a pretty hard time eating food I don't like. Or drinking things I don't like!

I thought I'd jump in here. My intent wasn't to lose weight, per se, but that was the result. I read a couple of amazing books. First one - The China Study by Campbell. It was STUNNING! It completely opened my eyes to the whole nurtrional "game" that is played in this country - and the companies with the money really rule - including the "pyramid" recommendations, etc. I also read "Crazy Sexy Cancer" (first) and it mentioned the China Study. I found both very enlightening.

I always thought I'd eaten a pretty good diet - I was a vegetarian about 90% of the time until I read these books. Now I'm vegan and do much of my food raw. I also juice everday and all I can say is that I have never felt better! I have no cravings at all - including sweets and oh! how I loved chocolate and other desserts! I changed my complete way of eating about 3 months ago now and I've lost about 13 pounds. I feel very happy with what I"m eating. My only goal is to get more variety overall. For the most part, the only "cooked" meal I have on a daily basis is my dinner meal (by my choice) and I really am doing well with it. I know it sounds pretty drastic and I guess it is, but wow - after reading The China Study I really felt it was the right thing for me. Even my DH joined me - and he wasn't even vegetarian before! He too has been amazed that he has no cravings! He doesn't do most of his food raw as I do, but he too has lost weight and is feeling very good. We also have to laugh at home much of the grocery store is now "irrelevant" to us. Makes shopping a breeze! :-) It may not be for everyone, but thought I'd share.

I got thru the evening without snacking!!! YAY!! And I didn't even feel the NEED to snack, now that is progress!!

Has anyone tried a colon cleanse? I have been doing a lot of reading about them, and it sounds like weight loss can be a lot faster after doing one. You metabolism will speed up as your digestion will be more efficient afterwards. There just are so many to chose from, it is nuts!! According to the reading you are supposed to have no less that 2 - 3 BMs per day. If you feel tired or sluggish, could be from the colon, if you get headaches, could be from the colon, if you suffer from IBS, could be from the colon, if you have bloating and gas, could be from the colon..... Also you can lose 5 - 25 pounds just from a cleanse.....we are full of crap!!! ::laugh

So again, has anyone tried one? Or does anyone want to try one?

Yes, I blew it again today too and I had such hopes this morning. I know mine must be hormonal or something because it's a feeling that I can't seem to control. Mind you, I am quite disciplined by nature so this out of control eating, is just that. Out of control and beyond my scope of reigning it in.

I took one of my husband's zanex and am trying to calm it down and I will attempt the veggie juice when I get the urge to eat something so hopefully the entire day won't be a let down.

Angie, thanks for the encouragment on the trip. I'm sure you are right, I will enjoy it once I'm there and I have had one of those spanx underpanties in my Amazon cart for a week now... maybe I'll pull the trigger and go ahead and buy one. I did get my toenails painted so I have a visual reminder.

Off to take a nap... I can't eat when I'm sleeping..

Kathleen,

That book sounds interesting. Reminded me of Marion Nestle's book, What to Eat, eye opening about how supermarkets are set up to lead you down those aisles of crappy food and get trapped. I also feel good when I eat some raw, but have found that I need cooked, especially in winter, since I am a "cold" type that needs warming. Perfect dinner for me is grilled salmon with dandelion greens sauted in garlic and olive oil.

This talking about food is making me hungry. John Travolta, when he was in a "heavy" phase, once asked Cary Grant how he stayed so slim, and Grant said, "Food has to become unimportant." It is kind of against nature and, like Travolta, I am Italian, so it is counter to all I've been brought up with. Food will always be important to me, I am what you might call a foodie, but every once in a while I think of Cary Grant and the spirit in which he said that line. In that spirit I would say, I'll breathe this good clean air and drink this delicious sparkling water with lemon in it, then maybe I'll have sex and contemplate the heavens. Who needs food? rolleyes.gif

Hey Suz, You can eat peanut butter and crackers still, just not too many of them! I think to totally deprive yourself of stuff you love will only make you binge eat anyways. Besides peanut butter is a good source of protein. I always have an issue getting enough protein when I am watching my diet.

So why not PLAN those peanut butter snacks into your diet?? Then you can enjoy them, and not feel guilty!!

Carol,

I suspect that hormonal appetite is the same as the AD appetite! It is like a seperate being, that has a life of its own!! You can be self talking yourself to NOT eat, AS YOU ARE EATING!! It really is stupid. My dad's advice....RESIST RESIST RESIST...is the only advice I can offer, and it isn't very helpful!!! I figure, if you are making good choices SOME of the time, you are on the right road.

Well ladies yesterday I had the day off and had a friend over for tea. I put out the leftover cashews, cookies and chocolate out in hopes that she would take some home with her. No such luck she still has plenty of xmas goodies left too. When she left I plopped down on the couch and tin of cashews in hand preceded to watch television. Before I knew it the whole tin of cashews was gone. I know nuts are full of protein and good fats but should be eaten in moderation.Cashews and nestle smarties are my achilles heel.I especially love the honey roasted ones.

It was if some hypnotic force was controlling my hands and mouth! Tara ....Tara ... Come eat me I'm in the top cupboard! LOL!

Yes.. you can lose 5-25 pounds from a cleanse, but it's not fat. And it's not mostly what you think tongue.gif It's mostly water. 2 days later after hydrating and eating normally, you put most of it back on.

I have a friend who does this dangerously too often.

If you're really serious about it, you should stick with just fruits and vegetables for 2-3 of days. The body cleanses naturally when you eat correctly.

If you want to cleanse because you think it will make you feel better.. have at it! But if your doing it for weight loss you'll be disappointed in the long run. Like I said.. it doesn't cleanse stored fat.

Check out some reputable doctor's websites and search it. I went to Dr. Wiels website, and Dr. Oz's. I also searched it out at the Mayo Clinic website when I was thinking about it. Commercial websites are just trying to sell you something.

Seriously though my brother's girlfriend had a colon cleanse and It didn't do anything for her. Mind you she eats healthy and weighs maybe 105lbs. dripping wet. I used to be 105 lbs ...MEMORIES....MEMORIES.......
CarolH
Well I won't say it again tongue.gif but will agree with everything Leanne said. It's a total waste of money. However.. eating the fruits and veggies for 2-3 days would make us feel lighter so I may try that as a jump-start.

Floater... you are so right.. it's as though there is another being taking over. A monster I have no control over. I have decided though I'm going to go off my estrogen and just use progesterone for a day or two and see if that calms that monster down. Only 18 days to go till my cruise... ughh... Do fat women go on cruises?

gyzwyf83
I have to agree with you, Kathleen... eating clean has certainly changed my appetite, eating habits, cravings, feeling of well being altogether. I haven't had a Xanax in about a week, when before, I was taking at least a half of one a day. Sleeping is so much better... deeper. I feel more refreshed when I wake up in the morning. My mind is clearer throughout the day, instead of just in spurts, here and there. I've also noticed that I don't get those blood sugar drops that lead to anxiety when I haven't eaten for a while, which is worth it all in itself! I'm hoping I've made it through the worst of the cleansing part as it got pretty rough there for a while. Am feeling so much better now.

I'm still struggling with drinking the one soda and a couple of glasses of sweetened teas a day, though. But, when I think back to before I changed over to eating this way, I was drinking 4-5 sodas a day. I'm getting there.

Walking is still on the agenda... one day soon, I hope!

OK Ladies!!

I too am jumping on the "I am NOT hungry- I am NOT hungry - I am NOT hungry' ....quickly followed by the "gotta lose some inches but does that mean that butter tarts are off the menu' ....band wagon!!

I never make New Years Resolutions...heck it took me 5 minutes to think of how to spell 'resolutions'.....but this year I decided to get healthy and lose those ...ahem...love handles. Not sure why they are called love handles cause I do NOT love them GRRRRRR.

I have a recipe that I want to share with you....excellent taste, easy to make and fabuliscious to boot!!

1 clove garlic
1lb fresh spinach, stemmed
1 tbsp sesame seeds
juice from half a lemon

Warm oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add garlic and stir until lightly browned (about 45 seconds). Add spinach (do in two batches if necessary)...and toss until wilted (about 2- 4 minutes) Sprinkle with sesame seeds and lemon juice.

YUMMY!!

I served this with a half baked sweet potato, and some baked chicken.

I have been reading your posts every day....and you have all inspired me to go the distance
Dottie
Whew..that is all the excerise that I can do today wink.gif

New Years Resolutions?

I like to think of myself as a realist, so doubt I will lose weight or give up junk food!

What I like to do in January is detox my body. No sugar No fast food etc!
Eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.

I have a smoothie for breakfast, orange juice (mostly fresh) and fruit blended together>> Yum really great!

I’m becoming addicted to watching movies instantly on Netflix and using my Body by Jake Firm-Flex or Thigh Master. I actually enjoy it!
Mostly for toning so hope it helps! About all I can manage for now well except taking my dogs for walks when it’s not so cold!

Hi - I didn't do so well today I am afraid. Just sitting around waiting and waiting and waiting for hospital time. Made pasta for dinner and then had a bowl of chocolate chips...ohman. I hope to be in a better frame of mind to take this more seriously once this situation is over Floats. I have to tell you that the best thing though for me is remembering your dad saying to you "resist, resist, resist" This will help me in my weight loss endeavour I feel.

Sincerely,
Suzanne

Suz, I understand!! When you are stressed out and dealing with a difficult situation the last thing on your mind is dieting. You probably NEED comfort food right now.

It is funny you should mention my dad and his "RESIST RESIST RESIST" message, I am awake in the middle of the night and I really wanted to eat something! Well darned if I wasn't hearing his voice in my head....resist resist resist....so instead I had a glass of water. Maybe his message will help all of us!!

I did well again today, except only 3 glasses of water. As always when I cut calories, I didn't consume enough protein. I always have trouble with that one. When I got home from work, I really WANTED to break down and just eat.....but....resist resist resist was running through my head. I think I am developing a little willpower!! I am beating back the AD appetite. My concern is, can I maintain it, as it seems like a constant daily battle.

Ok.. today is a new day and I feel better today than I have in a week. I wish I knew what always throws me, is it my hormones out of balance? or is it the accidental gluten? It seems strange that gluten would cause the out of control eating and the leg aches yet I can usually trail it back to something I've ate... while my hormones, I tend to always take the same dose with the exception of P. Could a lack of P create the monster inside me and cause the achy upper thigh aches?

Anyway... wanted to let you know that I tried the veggie juice. I juiced one carrot, one celery, some green pepper and some lettuce... it was not tasty but I was able to get it down. I do often do the fruit juices and they are good with a combo of apple, orange & berries.. sometimes banana. I plan on trying to veg & fruit my way through the day today and see if that doesn't help me feel even better tomorrow.

Wishing everyone a successful day!

Good for you, Carol! Glad to hear you're juicing as there are so many benefits to it. I think you'll start feeling better soon, if you can hang in there and keep doing it. Before you know it, you'll be on your way to paradise on that big boat, enjoying every minute of it!

hugs!!

Hi!

A juice that Dr. Oz from Oprah recommends doesn't need a juicer....just a blender and I find the apple, even in a vegetable juice, makes it much more tolerable.

4 Stalks of Celery
1 Cucumber
1 Cup Spinach Leaves
Juice of 1 Lemon
Juice of 1 Lime
1 Apple, Peeled and Cored
1 Piece of Ginger (if you like the taste of Ginger, I don't)

Whirl in a blender. It has a lot of nutrition and takes away that hungry feeling.

Top 10 Detox foods
1. Green leafy vegetables. Eat them raw, throw them into a brot, add them to juices. Their chlorophyll helps swab out environmental toxins and is an all round liver protector.

2. Lemons You need to keep the fluids flowing to wash out the body and fresh lemonaide is ideal. Its Vitamin C - considered the Detox Vitamin - helps convert toxins into water - soluble form that's easily flushed away.

3. Watercress Put a handful into salads, soups, and sandwiches. The peppery little green leaves have a diuretic effect that helps move things through your system. And the 'cress' is rich in minerals too.

4. Garlic Add it to everything - salads, sauces, spreads. In addition to the bulbs cardio benefits, it activates liver enzymes that help filter out the 'junk'

5. Green Tea This antioxidant-rich brew is one of the healthiest ways to get more fluids into your system. Bonus; It contains catechins which speeds up liver activity.

6. Broccoli Sprouts Get 'em at your health food store. They pack 20 to 50 times more cancer fighting, enzyme stimulating activity into each bite than the 'grown up' version.

7. Sesame seeds. They are credited with protecting liver cells from the damaging effects of alcohol.... (who moi? - innocent look).....and other chemicals.

8. Cabbage There are two main detoxifying enzymes in the liver. This potent veggie helps activate both of them. Coleslaw anyone?

9. Psyllium A plant that is rich is soluble fibre, but more versatile. It mops up toxins (cholesterol too) and helps clear them out. Stir powdered psyllium into juice to help cleanse your colon, or have psyllium fortified Bran Buds for Brekkie.

10. Fruits- Fruits - Fruits They are full of almost all the good things above - Vitamin C, fibre, nutritious fluids and al kinds of antioxidants. Besides nothing tastes better than a ripe mango, fresh berries or that perfect pear.

WOW ladies... all your suggestions are great!! I spent a few minutes this morning writing this stuff down!! I plan on trying that smoothie this weekend, DianaJJ!! Sounds great!!!

Suz.. go easy on yourself. Really. Don't even worry about it. When my son broke both his arms when he was 15, I lived on hospital vending machine food. Not good. But you'll get back in a routine once the drama is over. Hang in there!! ((((hugs to you and your son!!)))

LOVED the resist-resist-resist way of thinking. I'll need that this weekend! Also.. I heard once that when you're feeling a bit hungry we should think of it as I'M LOSING WEIGHT RIGHT NOW. We should eat.. but thinking that way might help from OVER eating.

Anyway Ladies.. have a great weekend, and RESIST RESIST RESIST biggrin.gif wink.gif
