Full Version: Am I really starting peri?

Over the past 6 months my period has become very irregular. I used to be every 28 days, with heavy bleeding and bad cramps. Now my periods have gone any where from 24 days apart to 32 days. Also my periods have become very light. Hardly any bleeding at all and no cramps.

I am also having hard trouble getting to sleep and when I do finally fall asleep, I mostly always wake up some time later and can't get back to sleep.

I have also had a couple of hot flashes episodes.

Now after reading nearly everything on here and other places on the web, it does sound to me like I am entering perimenopause.

But I'm only 31. Can I really be entering peri this early?

This is my first post here. My name is Sarah and I live in FL.

Hi Sara - Welcome to this wonderful community! After being well into this mess myself and hearing lots of stories on PowerSurge, it seems that nothing is impossible. Your symptoms sure sound par for the course. Why don't you make an appt. with your Dr. and ask for some blood tests to check your hormone levels. Best wishes for an easy journey through peri. The ladies here are very supportive and between all of us, we've seen practically everything there is to see in peri/meno.

Hi Sara:

The more I go through this journey the less surprised I am at how different everyone is and yet we all seem to go through similar runs during peri.

I started right after the birth of my son when I was 35 almost 36. So I have been having symptoms of peri for 10 years and my periods started being irregular about 2 years ago. All this after being a clock from the age of 8. I had not experienced the intense anxiety and panic attacks until then either.

I agree with sciencelady, go to the doctor and talk to them. Have you blood levels check and all that and explain your symptoms but dont be surprised if you hear that you are too young. I had several doctors tell me that and guess what? I was not too young.

Hope you are feeling better. Happy New Year.

Hi Sarah:

I'm sorry your feeling bad. I read your post and felt compelled to reply. When I was around 36 I started having what I thought where symptoms of peri, hot flashes, irregular periods, achiness, dry skin, itching, hair loss, irritable, and so many other things. I search the net and found PS then and thought oh finally I've found out whats wrong. I was wrong. I don't know if you have been to your doc, but I thought with your age maybe you should speak with them and maybe you should have your thyriod tested. When i went to my gyno back then and told him how I felt he suggested the thyriod testing. The thyriod can cause the exact same symptoms as peri, it can also cause a change in your period. I would ask them to test your TSH, Free T3, Free T4 and your antibodies. I know once I was diagnosed and got the thyriod hormones back ontrack the peri symptoms stopped, well until now and there back with a vengence.

I hope you find help and you feel better soon.

Patty.

Oh I'm from florida also, if you don't mind me asking where do you live, I'm in sarasota.

Sarah, I suppose it's possible you are perimenopausal, but if I were you I'd go see a good gynecologist and have your hormones checked. You might have some other kind of problem. You are kind of young for peri, full menopause is considered "normal" if it occurs between the ages of 40 and 60, and prior to menopause a woman can be peri for years, but 31 does seem a bit early. Go get checked out, just to be safe. Have your progesterone and estradiol measured, along with other tests.
