Hello Ladies,

I have a question for you. Last week at school, one of our teachers, peri-aged, had a really severe headache. When she tried to stand up, she felt really light-headed. She started to write something on the board, but she said her hand wouldn't write what she wanted it to. It looked like a first-grader was writing, and then she just passed out. She came to only a few seconds later. Her husband was called and he took her to the hospital. She had tests and they could find nothing wrong with her.

Could this have just been another peri symptom, or maybe a result of stress? Have any of you experienced anything like this?

Thanks,
Deb

As of today I have had the worst headache on the left side of my head right over my ear. I pounds and throbs. I can even rub around that area and it fells sore. It also travels down my neck.. I started with these headaches in July 08 when i found out I was in meno...went on HRT and the went away..but now as of Dec 2 they have arrived again with a vengence..Do they have something to do with meno..Well actually I think they have something to do with the crazy hormones fluctuating all over the place. I say that because this is the third time they change my dosage of hormones...I still dont think it is right. I am on HRT (Activella). I still am anxious and down right feeling loosy..I dont know if there is a miracle hormone out there that will actually get us throught meno..If there is please let me know...My doctor said if this last dosage does not work she will try me on BHRT..All I know is if these heachaches dont go away...UGH. I eat advil all the time..I am thinking of calling my gyn and see if she is sympatecic to hormone headaches....I am sure I will need to go to regular dr....But the advil is not cutting it anymore...It is really bad when it wakes you up from sleep every night...
Good luck to your friend and to all us peri and meno women

I don't mean to scare you but that sounds so much like a mild stroke! Especially with her not being able to write normally. She might want to go to some kind of specialist and be tested more. unsure.gif

My thoughts too, Barbara.

I have to agree with Barbara and TW....further testing should be done. Did they do a CAT Scan or MRI on her head or anything? This doesn't sound like a usualy peri situation but one never knows.

I feel so bad I just went on and on about my headache and did not even address the issue with your friend.....
I am so sorry....Yes I to agree is does sound like the symptoms of a stroke...I hope it is not. But I would make sure by seeking another opinion.
Sorry for my blubbering...

Thank you for all of your replies. I don't know exactly what tests were done, but she did go to the hospital. You would think the doctors would have a clue what to look for if they suspected it was a mini stroke. To be honest, that's what a lot of us at school were thinking, too. She was back at school only a day later and she seemed just fine. I think everyone was reluctant to mention the word "stroke" to her. I know she's been through a lot of stress lately and her husband went in for knee replacement surgery 2 days later.

Could have been a TIA (transient ischemic attack). That can be a pre-cursor to a stroke. She really should see a neurologist and have them do further testing. Better safe than sorry.

I agree, it sounds like a TIA...She needs to see a neurologist for further testing.

I also agree with all the ladies and would suggest further testing. It is true that sever stress can present with similar symptoms but the hand not obeying her is rather odd.
Please keep us informed
Hope she is alright

Yup,I'm voting for TIA too. The headache, losing consciouness, then being unable to perform a simply task (ie writing on the board) are all classic signs. I really hope she sees a neurologist. She needs a CT scan of her head and maybe even a PET scan to determine if there are any blood flow problems in her brain.

If they've rule out stroke completely, I guess the it could have been a severe case of hypoglycemia. It can cause a person to pass out and be disoriented upon waking. Is this gal diabetic?

sisha: It sounds like you have a cluster headache...a form of migraine. They're miserable, I know. I hope you feel better soon.

No, she's not diabetic and she had eaten lunch only a couple hours before it happened. I know she had an appointment to see her regular doctor soon. Hopefully, he will take care of making sure she has further testing done. I will mention all of this to the lady who works with her all day. She's concerned, too, and I know she'll discuss it with her. Thanks, ladies.

Hi there. It could be some type of a migraine. I had that very same thing happen to me a few years ago while I was trying to write and my hand locked up and I got dizzy. It ended up being an occular migraine, but I didn't even have a headache, but did have the other symptoms, which can mimick a stroke or TIA. I was in the hosptial for 2 days having zillions of tests done (MRI's, MRA's, EKG, blood work/stroke panel, ultrasound of my carotid arteries, stress test and some kind of brain test with electrodes on my head!)... and that is what the neurologist came up with. I was only 38 or 39 at the time. It was very scary b/c I didn't know if I had a brain tumor, had a stroke or what. She should absolutely get it looked at in depth. Rika

I just had that for the last 3 days... it is a mirgraine! They even had something on The Today Show about it this morning. It gets worse when you move around... the throbbing intensifies. You should see a doctor and see about getting actual migraine medicine. Advil and Exedrin Migraine medicine didn't do jack for it either!
