hello everyone.
my gynecologist and i have noted for over the past year that i am probably perimenopausal because of my irregular periods. i've also had night sweats this year for the first time in my life (i thought i was running a fever that had mysteriously broken ~ duh! one of my coworkers clued me in that i was having night sweats.) over the past year i've also experience dizziness, ringing in my ears, vertigo, forgetfulness, and lack of libido.
my reason for coming to this board is because of a "rhythmic" humming or buzzing sensation in my lower leg. it doesn't hurt, and it doesn't feel the same as when your leg "falls asleep". i can't even describe it as a tingling feeling. it's almost as if someone has implanted a cell phone in my leg and has it set on "vibrate". when i'm up walking around, i don't really notice it. but it's affecting my sleep. last night, i literally went into a full-blown anxiety attack, started crying (which i never do) hysterically, and had a terrible time finally getting to sleep. (i'm already dreading trying to lay down in a few hours, having to feel "buzz", "buzz" , "buzz".)
i saw on another website that this type of feeling might be tied to low estrogen prior to starting your period. i am due to start this friday, which in all actuality means i could start at any minute. so perhaps low estrogen is the culprit and this will all pass. sometimes though, things feel like they will never pass at all...know what i mean?
if anyone else has experienced this humming or buzzing sensation, i would love to hear from you.
i just want to know that i'm not alone and that i'm not imagining this.
thanks so much.

Hi swingerofbirches:
I get the exact same thing in my legs and arms. It is annoying but other than that benign. I have been having it on and off with no pain or further problems for about a year and ahalf.
I am glad that you have a doctor who is listening to you.
Hugs to you and welcome to PS!

Yep. I have experienced the cell phone vibrate thing. It is an irritating little symptom. I equate it to the mother ship trying to make contact.
Stichnanny is right, this is a benign symptom of peri.
You are very lucky to have a doctor that recognizes peri symptoms.
Take care.

thanks so much for your replies. it's reaffirming to hear that others have experienced this symptom.
my last gyno appt. was in september. i'm wondering if i should call her about this symptom, or just chalk it up to peri and live with it.
if there is something that would stop the buzzing that would be great.

i've heard vitamin B or magnesium can be helpful.
any other suggestions or advice?
much love,

Hi,
I had exactly the same buzzing but in my hip, of all places! Just the left side....it was very strange. It would only last a few minutes but it was very irritating. I would say it lasted a few months and then it just went away. I never get it anymore

I can't believe you posted this since I just ovulated a few days ago and as usual when my progesterone is high and estrogen low, I start having weird things happen.
I was lying in bed the past 2 nights and I started getting these weird sensations in my feet, like one poster said, like a cell phone was vibrating. I also got a bunch of cold flashes that chilled me to the bone. I am so thankful for this site so that I don't majorly stress about these things, although I admit the thought of MS crossed my mind

Yes I have had this too but in my left hip/buttock! its like someone has flicked a switch to put me in vibrate mode!! I too have tinnitus(thank god its doesn't keep me awake. ) On one of the other posts I have mentioned my main symptoms but everyday something new happens. Sometimes along with the tinnitus i get an echo sensation in my ear its like someone has pushed a pocket of jellied air in my ear and then pulls it out!! it lasts for about 2 seconds but its weird. I have also developed a hightened sense of smell. I smell burning before anyone else does!! (not such a bad thing provided its not my own body about to spontaneously combust during a hot flush). I really do understand *swinger* and hope that you feel better soon!
I have only ever been cheered up on this web site and I am sure you feel the same about being here too!!

Yup---have had this! There have been times when i thought my cell phone was in my pocket because i would feel it in my upper thigh/hip area. It hasn't been enough to keep me up at night--just another pesky thing to deal with!

I have this all the time too. I have it in my arms. Sometimes when I'm out, I swear my cell phone is vibrating in my purse ( which is over my shoulder) and I take it out only to see that no one is calling me! Sometimes it happens several times a day. I never really kept track of when it was doing it ( if a period was coming, even though it seems it feels like it's coming every day of the month!).......When it first happend I came to this website, saw it happend to others and just added it to my long peri list!

Welcome to ps. Here you will find a tremendous amount of support, so dont' be afraid to ask anything, here, anything and everything is addressed.
Good luck.

Hi There,
I know exactly what you are talking about! About nine months ago I was waiting to go out to dinner with my husband, standing on a busy road in London and I felt a strange sensation in my left let. "Thats funny, I thought, must be road works going on" I took the road works to the restaurant ... And it was just as your described, a rythemic vibration, a few seconds on, a few off.
Over the following ten days it spread to my right leg and the sensation changed, it became a 'tingle'. Then it started in my right hand, complete with numbness. By this stage I was seriously concerned and to cut a long story short I saw a neurologist and over the next couple of months I had every test in the book. Right at the beginning the neurologist said he felt that there was nothing serious, but still we went through the tests. MRI's, (brain and whole back) bloods, nerve tests, visual evoked tests - the works.
And at the end of all that still nothing! Which is great news remained a mystery. Until I found this forum and discovered I was not alone, there were several cases over the years of ladies from all over the place discussing their own journies. Of course, I mentioned all this to the neuro, he said that it was "not commonly reported" but that all he could do was rule out anything dangerous and nasty - and he had done that.
Now the tingling comes and goes, there have been whole months were I am barely aware of it and all of sudden its back, but it is less severe than it was. I take magnesium and have had accupunture, both recommended on this board and I do feel better. I think it does get worse with stress, well everything does, doesn't it!
I wish you all the best, it sounds as if you are in the same boat and will be fine too. Personally, I had to go through the tests even reading all I was and knowing that I was probably fine, I had to do it because the symptoms were so strange and nebulous. Do contact me if I can be of any help.

Dear BL and others,
Thanks you so much for your stories and encouragement. Just knowing that this is a REAL symptom that has been felt by others makes me feel much better.
I am going to look into taking magnesium. I have a call in with my GYN right now, and am waiting to hear back from her.
All of you are so lovely. What a blessing you are to myself and others.
With much love and thanks,
Jodi

I've gotten this "cell phone buzz" (what a perfect way to describe it!) in both legs, my arms (especially my elbows), and, I'm embarrassed to say, in my buns. Feels like floating down a river with the fish nibbling forever!
But it always goes away.
And so far, it always seems to come back.

Its funny but not too long ago I was standing in a shop with my husband and I mentioned to him that it felt like the shop must be situated above an underground train tunnel and I could feel the vibration of the train. He couldn't feel a thing. This happened a long time before I found this web site and new nothing about the symptoms of menopause!!!
Keep on Keeping on.....

I've felt like crying this afternoon; both my family physician and the nurse in my OB-GYN office said that they have
never even heard of this symptom. I couldn't believe it. Of course, the nurse at my OB-GYN's office called me back after hours, and I got the impression SHE was answering my questions, not my OB-GYN. (did that make sense?)
My husband keeps telling me to relax, and it will go away. I can tell I'm PMS'ing because his suggestions make me want to knock him through a wall!
Thanks for the support. You guys rock.

Hello,
I just wanted to tell you that I too have those weird vibrations or buzzing feeling in my legs - calves are the worst!! I really notice it at night when trying to relax on the couch, during the day I am busy and moving around so I dont notice it all that much, but I am here to tell you that you are fine, I have had it 24-7 now for about 2 months, along with other annoying things.. I chalk it up to hormones!
Anyhow we are here so feel free to talk with us anytime!
hugs!!

Hello Swingerofbirches,
It's incredible isn't it? Doctor's looking in wide-eyed amazement when you describe your symptoms! But you know that you are not imagining it - and neither are all the other buzzy people on this site.
Come back and reassure yourself whenever this gets to you, I did, I did and it stopped me from really cracking up.
During my online searhes I did find a coloum written (or purported to be written) by a lady gynacologist in response to a question, I seem to remember she saying that tingling in the exremities was a perimenopause symptom casued by the same drop in hormone responsible for hot flushes.
But we know that, don't we!!

I buzz at times. In all honestly, if this was my only peri symptom, I would such a happy lady! This symptom is the least of my worries. I would take buzzing over anxiety, palps, depression, weird hot flashes, cold flashes, High bp, insomnia, tinnitus, etc.

What a great bunch of ladies we are buzzing away like bees! A hive of activity!
I get buzzing, tingling, numbness, skin crawling and hot-n-cold sensations in arms, legs and just about everywhere... including some very
private areas! Like areas where you wouldn't even expect to have areas!
The great thing about this board is that you can meet a bunch of others who are going through exactly the same and you know that you're not going mad.
I found that doing 10 minutes on a walking machine or other type of brisk exercise early in the day fires up the circulation so that it doesn't bother me so much during the day. (The tingling etc... not the madness - that's 24/7 I'm afraid!)

Hi,swingerofbirches,
Just to add my two penneth worth- I also had had the same feelings a couple of years ago. I used to get it in my earlobe, my groin and also my one foot. When it first started in my groin I thought it was related to always carrying my mobile around in my pocket. When it started in my ear, definitely thought it was too long on the mobile! - But when it went to my foot, I had to think again!
I am not meaning to belittle a real problem, as at the time I really was very concerned about it, as I am sure you are now. I imagined it was all sorts of dreadful diseases, possibly one that nobody had ever discovered!
However, I can tell you that with me, it passed, although it continued on and off for several months, and still occasionally returns but only very vaguely and for only a few moments.
As other ladies have said, the best medicine for these uncomfortable symptoms is to check in to this site. You will always find somebody else that is/had the same. Unfortunately most doctors do not seem to have heard of a good many of these symptoms - surely some of the lady doctors must have experienced them firsthand.

Hi Swingerofbirches,
Yep, I buzz too! And mine is often only in my legs. Just like I put my finger in an electrical outlet... zap, buzz, zap.
I told my gynecologist that exact description last year and she, also, did not believe me. But the more I read here, the
more convinced I am that it is related to peri.
I am like Pippin, where it was frequent for awhile, but as the journey through this continues, it is occasional and
vague.
So far no harm seems to have happened.
And you aren't imagining it. I will validate that.
