gosh, it seems that most of my posts are about pain! I am so tired of this! Now I don't know if this is peri, or hormonal related, but it seems that about a week or so ago, my RIGHT leg (which is unusual for me, since everything is always on my left!) around the knee, and up the thigh, started to ache. I've had that before actually, but NOT THIS BAD.
It is somewhat on the knee cap, but mainly, on the outer side of the knee, that bone that 's there. When I bend my knee, it hurts! I also have aching up the thigh muscle. I have been staying off it, laying down as much as possible...using heating pads, and even my hair dryer on low to warm it up. That gives SOME relief, but not to much. I've had to take Tylenol and advil. I may have done "something" to my leg I suppose, I don't know. This doesn't hurt just sitting there, but when I bend it, it hurts! The thigh muscle however, aches. I would say this started up about a week ago, and I just got my period today, so, maybe it's hormonal.....

does anyone else get this?

I can relate... knee trouble is a chronic problem for me and both of my younger sisters.
My pain is usually concentrated on the right knee (particularly on bending, it feels like I get resistance when bending it.. hard to describe.) along with pain in the front of my thigh.

Anyhow, I've found that stretching in a warm tub helps. Also, if you get those resistance bands and are able to lie on the floor... you can wrap the band around your foot and stretch your leg straight up, and let it fall slowly to the side. That stretch really seems to make a difference in my knee pain.

This is also helpful for foot pains like those related to plantar fasciitis.. I have exceptionally high arches, and I work on my feet 8-12 hours a day, so I know this makes a big difference for achy feet.

You also have points directly above and below your kneecap. I usually take my thumb and index finger and run them along the thigh above my kneecap in a circular motion, and then in a downward motion with my knuckles under my kneecap (usually I just run it along my tibia). That seems helpful as well, just about any kind of massage makes me feel better... so that may be all there is to it. lol.

Hope this helps. Worth a shot smile.gif

I should add that when stretching your leg, play around a little.. see if you notice relief from moving your leg in different ways and try those too.

thank you "neffie"....lol....I like that name! I have already tried your suggestion, it seems to help somewhat ...hey, even THAT is better than outright PAIN!!!! THANK YOU AGAIN!~

TheOnlyNeffie
Oh good, hopefully the more you do it the more it helps. Best of luck to you with that.. I know how aggravating it can be.

"Neffie" is one of those bizarre things that stuck from childhood when a little girl couldn't pronounce "Stephanie". Somehow, it just hung on for dear life over all those years. lol.

I have always had a right leg pain always(since the began mensturating) a few days before my period. In fact, it was this right leg pain that made me always say, "oh oh, I"m about to get my period". Now that I believe that I'm in peri, I don't always get the leg pain...go figure....but I still get it occasionally. It would seem to me that it is hormonal because if I got it during PMS and PMS being and up and down of hormones as is Perimenopause, I would suggest to you that the most likely thing is that it is just your hormones.

Hi - I too have had some bad leg pain lately. I thought it was going to manifest itself into full-blown sciatica but thankfully that was kept at bay. I find that if I take lotsa flax seed oil - it helps immeasurably with my aches and pains. Otherwise I find myself starting to stiffen up...argh growing old!!!! I am not ready...geesh. If you are going to take tylenol - please watch your alcohol consumption...abstain in fact - very dangerous. Especially at this time of year, it is ubiquitous the alcohol...so watch your medications.

Sincerely,
Suzanne

UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! .. that's all I can say anymore! I still have this right leg pain, and it's truly bad around the knee, and that joint/bone on the outer side of the knee....esp. when I try to sit down, or get up, which makes me wonder if it's maybe muscular, i don't know! I just don't know what to think anymore!!! I take Tylenol for it, but I'm almost afraid to take that all the time! I was worse a few days ago, the ache was bad, and it was aching, just for the heck of it. Now, it's really just if i have to bend it, say, to sit down, and then get up again....BAD! (around the knee, and that outer side bone that runs down along the outer side of the knee). I have to almost lower myself down slowly, holding onto smething else, like I"m 90! If I don't, the pain in that outer side knee bone, is bad! I also use Ben Gay, which i stated before...but that doens't do that much. I take flaxseed oil, but I'll just have to take more I guess. I do the heating pad thing as well, but again, not to much relief. I can feel it wanting to stiffen up! Then, I get all panicky, thinking it's something serious!

thank you guys for responding..............when peri first hit, i had SUCH HORRIBLE LEG PAIN....oh my gosh!
but that was muscular, i could tell. THIS, is around the knee, as if its cartiledge or something, and that outer bone, so what is that then? is that hormonal too? I don't know how long this should last either. I end up almost limping, and walking really slow, THIS IS PATHETIC! I have to climb the stairs, one at a time!!!!!

UGH!!!!!!! mad.gif

Hi there, I too have bad leg pain in both legs. My kneecap feels like it has a spike in it and I too take one stair at a time. Very hard and slow going when carrying laundry up the stairs. Oddly enough I am not too bad going down the stairs. My hips are also almost immobile. I did ride my bike all summer and rode right up to November 30, which is amazing here in wintery Canada. I do use a cream called Celadrin and it gives some relief from the muscular pain. Hope that you feel better! Celica2

Hi mydarling,
I was going to post something about this yesterday, then came across this today. I was going to ask about sciatica because that's what I think my problem is, but the more I read your description of symptoms the more mine sound like yours.
I had a really bad bout of it a couple of weeks ago that lasted for a long time. Last week it seemed to be better (mine is the left leg). It kind of starts in my buttock or immediately below it where my cheek meets the top of my leg. Then it goes down a bit, then picks back up exactly where you are describing, the outside of my knee and calf. When it's really bad, I have trouble getting up and down.
I am a power walker and my doc recommended I stop for a while to see if that helped and it didn't.
Mind you, I didn't walk every day last week and it was good. Walked yesterday and it came back in the afternoon. That's why I'm thinking it's some kind of weird nerve thing. My doctor showed me a "map" of the body's nerves and my pain follows along one that produces this pain route.
I'm going to up my fish oil amounts because I know it helps to reduce inflammation. I may also try some of that mag. oil that everyone's talking about.
Good luck and I hope you find relief soon. I know what you mean when you say you sometimes feel like you're an 80 year old.....

Thought I would add my two cents here. I have had sciatica (actually had surgery because the disc was ruptured and sitting on the sciatic nerve) Sciatic pain is overwhelming and constant. My experience has been that the sciatic pain (first bout ) lasted for six weeks or so---nonstop. The second episode did not end until surgery. I would think that if the pain was occasional---it may not be sciatica. Hope that helps!

THANK YOU LADIES...for all the posts! I have to be honest, and don't think i'm whining...but this is awful!
I know you're all experiencing the same thing, so I know you know the feeling. But, wow!!!!!!!

I still have this! I kept telling myself, it'll go away after my period..well, my period came and went, and it's still here!
It seems to be centering around the knee, .. that bone on the outer side that runs down along next to the knee cap.
Also, in that soft part of your knee. I still have TROUBLE sitting down, and getting up. There are times during the day, when it isn't as bad, and times when it's bad. But i've had this now for prob. about two weeks or so. I just don't know what to do.

OK, so are we saying it's hormonal? Sciatica I think, starts in the lower back, am I right? I know it tends to "shoot" down your rear end, and into your legs....I think that's how it works, but I'm not sure. This is not that. Sometimes it'll ache in the thigh muscle as well, but it's mainly around the knee area, those joints and muscles. I am taking EVENING PRIMROSE OIL, and the OMEGA 3's.....I will up the doseage I guess. I also know that organic apple cider vinegar (Braggs is the best brand), is very good for aching joints and such ... well, apple cider vinegar is great for so many things! So, I'm going to pick up another bottle tomorrow again, I let it go for a few mos. and I shouldn't have really..........you just mix 2 TBLS. with a glass of water and sip it down, slowly...so it absorbs. you can add raw, organic honey, or molasses to sweeten it up, plus that way you also get all your minerals as well.

I had some "old" apple cider vinegar in the fridge, so i grabbed it, and messaged it into my leg, and knee....it DID help some....I'm going to do that now. Just realize, after doing that, you won't smell to good..lol...but, who cares, i mean, the knee pain is worse! tongue.gif

ONE MORE THING...................does this sound like arthritis? does arthritis just start up one day out of the blue?
