Hi, Tina.....I'm not quite 50, only 47, but I work out for an hour or so every day. I alternate between a treadmill, exercise bike and free weights. I have never liked classes or the gym, but am fortunate enough to have the space and equipment I like at home, along with some great music and DVD's to help inspire me!

The important thing is to find something you enjoy so you will stick with it. Good luck!
Jonie
I play tennis.
I used to dance ballet and still do in the privacy of my home when the mood hits me and the music is right.
Exercise should be fun.
Line dancing - if there are no classes in your area - well, start your own group.
Put up notices, get in touch with the school, put an ad in your local newspaper...etc.
You might be surprised how many people are interested.
Have fun!
Jonie

I just turned 50 and like you would like to drop some pounds but despite all my efforts the pounds continue to hang around. I suppose my problem has more to do with my eating... I eat clean foods but most of that is in the form of natural peanut butter and rice cakes....

I do however work-out 5-6 days a week. I have a gym set up at home with a treadmill, weight sets and I use video/dvd workouts as well. I have Cathe, Firm, Tracy Long and some others. There are many dance fitness videos you can get if you prefer dance. CollageVideo is a great place to see what is available.

Happy 50!

thanks for all these replies!

Carol, I try to eat like you do...but that natural peanut butter is really yummy. I just received Dr. Fuhrmans Eat for Health 2 book set, but I know without the exercise, I just won't feel good or get the weight off...I think video's may be my only option since I also have animals, and work full time, 6 days a week...so I don't even know when I could go to a class if I found one since I feel bad not being home for the dogs and cats after working so many hours..I thought once the kids grew up I'd have more free time, but that hasn't proven to be the case. (and, the dogs can't walk long because one has a neck and leg issues..so I just let them out in the yard (fenced) and they come back inside within five minutes)

Hi Carol:

Try cutting out (or reducing) the natural peanut butter and rice cakes - you will be amazed at the weight loss - trust me -

Hey Tina- I will be 50 in July, AND my daughter is getting married 10 days before my birthday. I am determined to be fabulous! laugh.gif tongue.gif I haven't started consistantly yet, but my plan is to move in some form (walking, Yoga DVD, I'll join a gym if I have to!) for 60 minutes a day, and stay on about 1300 calories a day. I hate paying for Jenny Craig, or Nutrisystems, but I think I might because then I don't have to count calories. I'm not sure yet.

I KNOW what to do, it's actually consistantly doing it that trips me up. I'm hoping vanity takes over and inspires me after the holidays!! tongue.gif biggrin.gif

Leanne.........just be careful with nutrisystem........I did it for 3 months and thats when all my symptoms started........but it may be because I dont tolerate soy well and a lot of their foods are soy based.........but I ended up in hospital and was told that I have IBS and never to do nutri again..........but like everything else it varys with different folks..........Valerie

Thanks Valerie for the "heads up". I didn't realize they had so many soy based foods! I doubt I'll actually join anything. My g/f wrote out menu's for her to follow every week. That way she could count the calories, and not have to think about what she could eat because she had already done the math. I think I will give that a try first, before I go in to panic mode and start joining everything tongue.gif

I just need to stay away from restaurants!! It's just me and hubby now and he always wants to go out, and I must admit I rarley put up a fight! biggrin.gif

I'd highly recommend Karate or some form of martial arts. It's not only good for your body, it's great for your mind and memory. I've also found the discipline to make a big difference to my work performance. The manners required in martial arts carry forward to every part of your life.

The biggest reason I recommend this?? THere was this 70 year old guy who came into the class - a brown belt. Boy could that guy kick! I wanna be that 70 year old cool.gif

I'm 52...(feels weird claiming that age) but I'm indeed 52 (uhm wow) biggrin.gif

I recently returned to yoga classes, three time weekly, cleaned up my diet a bit, and started zumba classes... I've lost 15 pounds.

This shift has boosted my body confidence significantly... I'm more motivated than ever to drop another 20-30 pounds...

Good luck... wink.gif

A friend of mine was telling me she has been hearing alot about zumba. I watched some video's of it on youtube and it looks fun...I may try to find a class locally...as long as the people there are not all in their 20's with that size 5 body, I'll be fine..I also did order a dvd (not zumba, just exercise) that should be here monday..thanks.

Dear Ladies

I keep fit by doing quite a bit of walking-albeit not that brisk! Also I practise Yoga,in a group setting.I also try to use steps rather than elevators-partly because I am terrified of them!

I always have a good breakfast, moderate lunch and just a glass of warm milk and a bananna in the evening.Have cut out coffee, except for the very occasional cup,no alcohol.Try to avoid sugary foods but will always have a treat now and then

Aren't I boring!
But it does work
God Bless

In my 20's....cardio/isometric 90 minute classes 3 days per week.
In my 30's....cardio/isometric 60 minute classes 3 days per week.
In my 40's....walking 3 miles, 3 days per week and 30 minute isometric workouts.
Now in my 50's.....pilates, yoga, walking, and isometric workouts.

Have never liked carbs. Sugar makes me feel awful...bloated, irritable, etc. So the stuff that makes you pack on pounds, I thankfully have never had issues with.

I just bought a new treadmill last week. Boy did my husband and I have a blast putting that thing together! NOT! The salesman told us it was a cinch to put together. I'd like to go back to Sears and slap him silly! Not really....but it was a 5-hour job for us old f**ts. biggrin.gif I plan to walk on it every time I think about eating something I shouldn't! wink.gif

i am 56 now.. (how did i ever get this old!) 2 years post now. i have had a love/hate affair with the local gym for a few years... when i am not doing free weights, i use the Power Plate.. plus i have a small home gym, dumbbells and a stepper at home.. i try to walk regularly, fail more often than not, but still walk more than i ever have before.. shame it's winter now and the beach walks are just too cold! i have a Wii Fit, and have the new EA Sports Personal Trainer for the Wii on pre-order.. (it's out next week here in australia) The Fit isn't bad, i am able to do yoga poses now i couldn't do when i started, and standing on one leg while i do things with the other leg does not make me fall over now! lol...

it's all worth it, i may still have a bit of weight to lose, but at least i am stronger than ever, more flexible than i used to be, and more fit too.. and i feel so much better in my own skin. biggrin.gif

texasgirl... sounds like you had as much fun putting that together as my husband and i had putting the home gym thing together! lol...

I turned 50 in November. I try to something physical every day, but I usually work out about 5 days per week on average. I do some classes at the gym - spinning, weight lifting, yoga. I also walk about a 1/2 hour per day and jog twice a week. Now that its spring, however, I'm outside riding my bike and working in the yard. Everything counts!

I am not 50 yet but will be next year. I walk every day (about 2 miles) and I do yoga two to three times a week. I also do free weights a few times a week. I have noticed my arms are tightening up some so that is nice to see. I have always taken my exercise seriously but more so the last 10 years. I think i even feel better than I did in my 30's but then again, I don't have any babies keeping me up all the time. smile.gif

It is so good for us women to take care of our hearts as doctors don't seem to take heart disease seriously in women.
