I use to get really cold... almost like I had ice water in my veins... now that I'm on hormones I dont' have that anymore. I do still get hot flashes from time to time though...

It's definitely a symptom of Peri but it can also be caused by an under active thyroid so you may want to get those levels checked too.

Best of luck to you....

Yes, bimmergal, it's very normal! I use to sit in an almost fetal position everyday at the same time, in the heat of a Florida summer cause I was FROZEN to the bone!

I also have extreme hot flashes when everyone else is freezing half to death.

Oh JOY!!

Yes I had "cold Flushes" as well as hot.....would be freezing put layers of clothes on for about half an hour then my body would come back to normal then I'd have to take the layers off! I prefer these to Hot flushes they are the pits!!

cheers choco

Boy, can I identify with the this. I would get the hot flashes first though and then the chills right after. I would go from hot to cold all the time. I'm not having the cold chills as much anymore, just the hot flashes. The ice water in my veins is a perfect description CarolH. I think that's the adrenal surge.

I am just mostly cold, like it will come over me all of a sudden, the goosebumps and all.. Then at night with blankets I get to warm, not hot flashes but warm!

Yes ma'am! Had one just the other day. Temp felt comfortable in the house then suddenly I was shivering and frozen to the bone. Lasted about a minute and I was fine. Had one once where I was so cold I had to cover up with a blanket. In Houston. In August. Fell asleep, then woke up about an hour later sweating like I'd taken a nap under a broiler. Just one of many thrill rides at the Perimenopause Amusement Park...only it ain't very amusing, is it?

So it is normal to get the cold flashes in peri... I am now starting to feel clammy when I wake in the middle of the night.. not drenched just clammy.. is that how it starts too... smile.gif

The past few months, right before my period, I get frozen to the bone. My feet feel like ice cubes and the rest of me just feels freezing cold. I use to get a little chilled for a few days before my period, and it was always in the evening hours and right before bed. It would last a couple of hours and then be gone. But the past few months, it is different. I just feel frozen to the bone! Again, it happens only a few days before my period and in the evening. I told my husband to just feel how cold I am! He said I didn't feel cold at all. He was right. I didn't feel cold to the touch....my skin did not feel cold, but like someone here said, it felt like I had ice water running through my veins. To myself, I felt cold inside and out. I put on extra socks & put on a sweatshirt. I put flannel sheets on the bed with 3 blankets......still freezing! About 2 hours later, a surge of heat starts at my feet and goes through my whole body that feels wonderfully warm. Ahhhh, I finally feel warm and can try to go to sleep. But wait! Now, I am sweating and have to throw off covers and clothes. Geesh. Will it ever end??!! I'm 53 years old and still have periods....ugh! However, my periods have all of a suddenly gotten very short...about 1 and half to 2 days. Think this has anything to do with my temperture change?

I get cold chills often and i think they're worse than hot flashes.Mine feel like when you have the flu and start shivering...they make my insides vibrate and i'm always thinking i'm coming down with the flu.....it's hard for me to tell the difference anymore.

If you're going through perimenopause or menopause and experiencing these cold chills, it is very possibly an indicator that your thyroid is not balanced, which commonly occurs with an imbalance of estrogen and progesterone. Many doctors do not pick up on this with typical labs, because it is often subclinical, but can be treated with a low dose of T3 in some cases. Contact one of our consultant pharmacists and we can discuss with you further and suggest more specific labs that can be drawn and discuss your symptoms and make some recommendations for therapy for you to discuss with your doctor for a customized compounded prescription.

I'm freezing right now...I get hot flashes, night sweats and now really cold....it's so weird and my thyroid is fine. I get heart palps, bad anxiety, all sorts of crazy stuff. I'm 2 years without a period and I'm also experiencing a 3 year tension type headache and now, add to the mix, pains in my head and a headache in my forehead almost all day everyday on top of things. I try hormones and they make me feel sick. I had yet another visit to the ER Sunday for this headache situation and to my dr. today too. I'm in a nightmare...

Yes, Pete is right. I've been on this board for about a year trying to figure out the whole bio HRT thing, symptoms, etc. Most of my symptoms have always been, chills, cold hands and feet, losing hair at temples, no libido, no energy, weight creeping up, muscle pain, low and changing body temperatures, mood swings, and it goes on and on. I started the bio HRT in low doses and have been on it for almost 9 months and I hadn't noticed any big changes except I slept a bit better and my rages were better. I had been told by my primary and gynecologist that my thyroid blood tests were all normal and it was peri. So believed them. Well then figured these bios aren't working that well so I insisted on a songram of my thyroid and some antibody tests and sure enough I have complex cysts and nodules. A resulting trip to an endo and further blood tests revealed that I have low free T4, and very low ACTH (adrenals/pituitary) and low vitamin D and low Ferritin. The endo didn't mention any of this and said I didn't need to be treated. I was like the bios aren't helping, I'm freezing, gaining weight, feel sick, help me. He said no treatment needed to stay on the bio HRT. Well I read every book, research paper and I've been spending much time on another board about the thyroid/adrenals. I most likely have hypopituitary. I won't go on about all the details.

I just want to say check your thyroid, adrenals, pituitary, ferritin, iron, vitamin D and try to find a holistic, or naturpath because mainstream doctors won't treat subclinical adrenal and thyroid issues. So far I'm not feeling great yet and I've started Armour and Hydrocortisone. I think I may be allergic to one of them and I'm going to look into a compounded cortisone. But I'm convinced that many women who have problems around this time and are not benefiting from hormone treatment, or even if they're not on HRT, but have low thyroid symptoms: thinning hair, weight gain, depression, anxiety, thin nails, dry skin, etc. then you must get checked and take a trial on some treatment.
