Hello!
I had a FSH test last week, waiting to see results next week.. but what are the ranges, I mean to BE IN peri?
Does anyone know?

Thanks..

Hi,

I believe that if your number is over 20 you are entering peri. The normal FSH for a women is a low number like 5-10 or something like that.

I think the first time I had it tested because I was feeling very peri about 5 yrs ago and it was at 23, now at the age of 50, my fsh was 39 last time tested. But, be sure to ask your doc about it.

Take care, Juliann

Hi L,

Yes make sure you ask for the number because they seem to say normal it seems no matter the reading.

When mine was tested 2 years ago it was 17 and the dr. gave me a chart stating anything above a 10 they consider fertility problems....he said this was peri at 17.........last April I had it checked again and it was 38 and this was my GP this time and she said this was normal sooo...

I had it tested back when I was 35 and it was 3 so.....

When I had it tested four months after I stopped having regular periods, it was 45, which my GP said meant I was "well into menopause". As it happened, peri and its erratic periods continued for another three years and I'm only now one year post menopause.

Hello ladies..
Ok so I will ask the reading number, but in our heads what number is considered peri? Your reading was high and your GP said you were normal??? hmm... what do you think?
I find out in 2 weeks.. ugg.
Thanks again!!!

Mikki,

So are you in peri or not, why would the doc say normal if it is that high? Any and all info helps me..
thanks!

Hi everyone - I might as well add my FSH number to the mix. Mine was 71 in Sept. 08. I was feeling awful, after a year of going through the mill with a gastrointestinal doc, I went to my OB/GYN who said that I was "well into menopause" with that number. In '08, I've had light 3 periods, the most recent was 2 weeks before I had the FSH test. She wanted me to have a transvaginal ultrasound to measure the thickness of my uterus to make sure it wasn't getting too thick. Everything came out fine. Now, I've just got to wait for my body to get through this mess. There seems to be such a wide range experiences of how we all pass through this REALLY trying, difficult passage. I am more than ready to get past it. Best of luck to all of you. It seems that time is the only thing that truly helps us all.

I'M A LITTLE CONCERNED NOW AFTER READING THIS PARTICULAR BOARD. IN THE PAST 6.5 MONTHS OR SO SINCE MY SURGERY I'VE BEEN EXPERIENCING IRREGULAR PERIODS; SKIPPED APRIL AND MAY; JUNE WAS LIGHT; THEN JULY CAME AND LASTED 4 WEEKS; I HAD 2 WEEKS CLEAR AND THEN SEPT CAME AND LASTED TIL OCT. THE 7TH TO BE EXACT. THEN 10/30 I GOT A PERIOD BUT WASN'T REAL PERIOD; IT LASTED 5 OR 6 DAYS AND WAS JUST THE OLD BLOOD. NOW ON 11/17 I GOT IT AGAIN; REGULAR CYCLE BUT NOW STARTING WEEK #2. LAST NIGHT I WENT HOME AND PULLED MY BLOOD WORK FROM MAY AND MY FSH WAS A 5. THERE WAS MORE BLOOD WORK DONE IN SEPTEMBER BUT IT DIDN'T HAVE FSH ON THERE. BUT DID SAY ESTROGEN LOW I THINK. MY QUESTION IS..... DOES MY FSH HAVE TO BE HIGH TO BE EXPERIENCING PERI SYMPTOMS?? I'M NOW GETTING PERIODS EVERY MONTH BUT THEY'RE LASTING FOREVER. NOW I'M THINKING I AM GOING CRAZY.

As far as FSH levels go, I think they change so often ( like minute to minute) that's it's really hard to go by those numbers. My doctor won't even test me. She said that I am still having periods ( I have been skipping months at a time for 3 years, since I was 41)....and the numbers wouldn't be accurate. I figure even if I do know the numbers what difference will it make anyway rolleyes.gif I will get through this when I get through this! I think ignorance is bliss in my case!

Your FSH can be all over the place in peri. Mine was measured 3 times in the past 2 years and it measured low end of normal each time.

Unless you're trying to get pregnant, I wouldn't even think about FSH if I were you. Estradiol will also be all over the place during peri. You might be able to measure your progesterone, which will likely get increasingly lower as you move through peri due to anovulatory cycles (which can occur even if you are still menstruating regularly).

Are you trying to figure out where you are in the peri phase ? Like to figure out how close you are to menopause ? I think there are better ways to tell.

Well I guess I want to know because of all the awful symptoms I am having.. and the docs say ANXIETY.. is it just that? My Mom went through it early and I will be 42 soon, soooo I am wanting to know if this is my problem so to speak.. lol.. How else can you tell?

thanks!!

Lady,

First of all you are NOT going crazy!! Second of all your FSH level means nothing, it was low the day you were tested....that is all it means. You are definitely in perimenopause. All the symptoms you have listed are classic. And the silly thing is what happens to one person isn the same as what happens the next. I am sure I started peri in my mid 30s as my periods became very heavy and my cycle was 24 days. Then at 44 I abruptly started having periods every 90 days like clockwork. That went on for 2 years and then they just stopped. Done. Finito. I was 46. During those peri years my doctor didn't test hormones either, said there was no point as the readings would be different from day to day. After 6 months without a period my FSH was finally tested and it was 56...definitely menopausal.

Peri is more of a symptomatic condition, at least until you are very near the end. Expect the unexpected. Nothing will be as it was. If this is the case, you are perfectly normal!!
SandraSmith
I looked back at your prior posts and I see that you are taking BCPs. That will mask some of the symptoms I was going to suggest you watch out for.

At 42 it's likely that you are in peri or are entering soon, but since you are taking BCPs it's hard to tell if the anxiety and other symptoms you complain about are due to peri or due to your BCPs. Did you perhaps switch BCPs recently ? Can you go off of them for a while to see where you're at with respect to peri ?

Nancy I was having peri symptoms when my fsh tested at 3 something 3 years ago and that is when I first insisted they test it and afterwards the results did make me feel like ok what is wrong then I knew what I was feeling..i did not know then that it would jump up and down. I think as you approach menopause it stays elevated on a more consistant bases though or at least that is what I was told so its fluctuations become less and less or at least less drastic like from 40 back down to 3....eventually it just doesn't go back down. I know something was up in my mid 30's, just because it didn't show up anywhere in tests, my body told me something was not working smoothly anymore and that is what you can trust more right now, not a #.

L,
I think unless my reading read maybe 300 or someting then she(my DR.) may have said hhhhmmmm why is this, but the # fell into post range so I think as long as it fell into a range it was considered normal....I guess if we really think about it it is normal because menopause for all of us is considered normal and even if the age varies greatly....I think we just want them to SAY it so we can be relieved somewhat yes yo are in peri and this is why you feel this way.
Yes I am in peri. About 4 months after the 3 reading my cycles went haywire and have been that way since. For 2 years they were very early and heavy, getting them 2x a month and in between there would be some normal cycles in the past few months they are everywhere...from late to spotting for weeks and weeks. They just have progressivly gotten more all over. The first DR. I went to when my reading was 17 was a obgyn and said that anything above a 10 means you ovaries are starting to fail...the number may come down the next month, but the higher reading just that one time still means your running out of productive eggs. Well, Hello ladies,
My understanding with the FSH levels is below 10, it's considered normal. Over 10 up to 49, that's the perimenapausal time. And above 50 is considered post meno. Basically the higher your numbers, your closer to the end of meno.

With the way the hormones are fluctuating - it's no wonder we feel wacky at times. Had a parital hyst. about 13 yrs. ago - so I ovulate, but I don't get a monthly period to track what my levels are other then symptoms and blood work. 6 months ago, my FSH was 39. I'm thinking Yeah, I'm getting close to post meno. And then 2 weeks ago - had another FSH test - it shows 8.3 - so my levels went down instead of up. I went close to post meno. to norm. My feeling is that one ovary is shutting down - and the other one is still fuctioning within norm. Oy Vey...our hormones can bring laughter and tears within 2 min.'s, geez laugh.gif

Oh, hot, then cold...hmmm dry.gif , have you had your thyroid level checked? If your more cold then hot, your thyroid level may be off a little bit. Just a thought.

Thanks so much Floater! These are words I need to hear right now. I try to talk with some people at work and all I get is "you're too young for that! You're just a baby!" So then I start thinking I must be mental.

When I look back, I think I must've started at maybe 3-5 yrs ago. I just turned 40 this year. So about 35/38. But symptoms more mild than now. I would get hot flashes during night; covers on/off. But I wouldn't sweat, just get hot. NOW I sweat. Not profusely, but enough. My irritability at work increased; but I just thought it was the job. There were days i would ask myself, why am I so angry all the time? Now it's getting clearer.

Well I'm glad to hear I'm not going crazy. I just hope it gets easier.

Yes I have had the TSH test, but doc said that was normal!? However I have heard that the TSH test isnt always correct and I need more invasive testing.. anyone know about that? I agree I am not convinced it isnt my thyroid...but who knows..

thanks!

Hello,
Remember.....during peri menopause your estradiol and fsh levels can be all over the map. I am 46 and two years ago my fsh levels were at 84 (high) and all the nasty symptoms associated with menopause lasted three months. Just when I thought I was doomed at 44 to start menopause, I did bounce out of it for two years.
I had my fsh and estradiol levels checked in June of this year. My fsh was at 17 and estradiol was 104. Then in September, all those wonderful night sweats and drenching hot flashes returned. My fsh had shot up to 107 and my estradiol levels fell to 23. I experienced these much dreaded symptoms again until the end of Oct. I did get my period and have felt perfectly fine. So.....my point is, during peri menopause your fsh can fluctuate month to month.
Primrose
Hi,
I have a quick question about FSH. Does anybody know if it remains raised after menopause for the rest of your life?
Thanks
Primrose
Interactive
I wondered that Primrose. Does it go on increasing and increasing, trying to promote the closed down ovaries to produce an egg?

It's kind of annoying that one kind of hormone to do with reproduction (FSH) seems to go on increasing in abundance, whilst estrogen, progesterone and testosterone all decline significantly with all the effects that brings. Nature obviously intended there to be no opportunity of older women reproducing. Richard Dawkins in 'The Selfish Gene' explains this as a womans' genes standing a better chance of being passed on to future generations, once a woman passes a certain age, if the woman invests her efforts in her grandchildren surviving rather than in producing further children of her own.
SandraSmith
I think that FSH does stay permanently high after menopause. It might fluctuate a bit, but I think you'll never see the kinds of low values you saw prior to menopause.

I read that estradiol suppresses FSH. With the low estradiol of menopause, the FSH cannot be suppressed. I'm sure it's actually more complex than that.
Primrose
Thanks all for the replies. I would imagine it stays high too, and then this must have an effect on everything else, eg cholesterol, thyroid etc, so it's no wonder we are out of whack! I also think it must be put out in the urine, as everything in excess is excreted by the kidney, hence the bladder troubles which we mainly think of as UTI's.
bimmergal
Hello all..

Ok my FSH was at 5.0.? So does that mean I am not in peri?? I have so many symptoms it seems, and I am almost 42. I also wanted you all to know that I am grateful to have found this site, My anxiety is much lower lately it seems...
THANKS!

CuriousityandTheCat
I can't speak for anyone else...but I wonder if the FSH is really worth looking at in peri. I have two docs in disagreement as to whether or not I am in peri. One says my FSH wasn't high enough the other says hogwash because my progesterone was so low and my other host of symptoms scream perimenopause. I say, listen to the body and see what it's telling you. I do believe mine is telling me to buckle up because this is the start of perimenopause.

I have been having more weird clots in my period, my periods themselves are sometimes shorter sometimes longer...and a whole long sad list of other stuff that all is like a billboard stating "HORMONES FLUCTUATING: PROCEED WITH CAUTION" *heehee*
