Full Version: Effect of Vit C on Cortisol

Does any one know whether the "internal tremors" can be caused by wacky coritsol levels? I tend to feel like I have had 10 cups of coffee in the a.m. even though I never ingest ANY caffine. I generally feel a bit better in the afternoon, when, I am guessing, my cortisol level decreases.

If cortisol levels are too blame, does Vit. C help? Has anyone tried this? I have tried Mag. supplements but no real improvement.

I am currently experiencing the high cortisol levels in the AM usually between 5-30 and 7-30am each morning due to withdrawal symptoms from coming off the AD I was taking for 18 months. From advice I have read on this board I started taking 1000mgs Vit C in the morning and 1000mgs at night to see if it would help and I think it has and I'm sure it has helped me stay healthy and free of coughs and colds so theres a bonus. I also take up to 600mgs of magnesium a day mainly at night as it gives me the runs during the day if I take it early on in the day. I think my cortisol level is also a bit high in the later evening just before bedtime like from 10-12pm as I am finding it hard to get to sleep most nights but then again I am suffering with insomnia since tapering off this AD.

My body has become sensitised to the least bit of stress now so any little bit of worry will set off the adrenaline flight or fight response in me. It's like our base line has been moved up a couple hundred notches so we react to stressors more intensely than a normal person. I have found just laying in bed doing my breathing exercises and NOT panicing over this feeling is the only way to get through it and not to feed on it, but has been annoying to say the least that it wakes me so early every darn morning as I have never been a morning person in my life and I don't like it one little bit. I drink chamomile tea daily to help relax and I just read yesterday that the bioflavonoid Quercetin can help lower cortisol levels too, I am yet to try this but it also enhances the absorption of vit C so I suppose they would work together to lower cortisol levels.

It seems to be all connected to whacky hormones, stress, anxiety, depleting our adrenals, more stress and worry, more anxiety, more internal tremors, less sleep, more stress and the cycle goes on and on.

39,

You could be experiencing adrenal fatigue. Often what happens when we are low in cortisol is that the adrenaline kicks in to make up for it. The heart pounds or starts racing, we get anxiety, etc. Going through meno is a major stress on the adrenals, since they are supposed to take up the slack and produce the hormones that our ovaries are no longer producing.

Have you considered doing an adrenal saliva test?

I had those symptoms and after my doc put me on hydrocortisone (low dose) they resolved.

Forgot to add that in addition to the Vit C, pantothenic acid is very important for adrenal health, usualy 500-1,000mg/day. And also a high-dose b-complex.

Thank you for your insight. I have started the Vit C, and will look into the other supplements. I will try to update you re: any improvement.

Rox, you nailed it on the head - probably a combination of anxiety, stress, wacky hormones, etc. When I have the slighest bit of anxiety, I get a more pronounced adrenal rush that lasts for a long time.

Rox, when you say you feel that you have high cortisol levels in the a.m., what do you feel like? I feel like I am wired on caffine, or that feeling of an adreneline rush that lasts for an extended period of time. My legs feel shakey, and my hands are all jittery. Although I haven't ruled out more serious diseases for these symptoms, they seem to be hormone/cortisol related since the sensation comes and goes throughout the day. I've also notice that I get jittery after exercise and sex (sorry - too much info).

Frankly, I don't think I am peri since my periods have remained as regular as they have been all my life - 28 - 30 day cycles, although, I did have a 26 day cycle 2 months ago, and my last period was lighter than normal. Maybe this is just the start of peri, but what a way to begin!

Sariah,

I don't really understand adrenal fatigue. I kind of dismissed that since I have no general fatigue - I wake up rested and have plenty of energy throughout the day. Doesn't that go against classic adrenal fatigue? I worry that I have other problems with my adrenal glands, but don't know what they could be - or how to solve them.

My doctor said he doesn't believe in adrenal fatigue...FP... Hopefully, this Alternative doctor will test for this... I am so sensitive to stress that I literally am unable to function...

I had my cortisol levels checked and my morning level normal and evening was low. I also wake up early with heart palps, anxiety, stomach flutters. I feel like I drank a bunch of coffee(which I had to give up). I don't understand why my levels wouldn't be high in the morning since thats when I'm feeling jittery. The endo doctor wants to recheck in 3 months. I do take xanax but not that early, maybe late morning. I feel so much better in the evening.
I really hate the morning feelings.....
