Hi Ladies,
For some reason my body can't handle taking individual vitamins like C, B12 etc even if I take them with food. So, I have been taking a Women's One-a Day. My question is if the vitamin contains 100% Daily Value of the supplements I need am I REALLY getting what my body needs, like B12, on a daily basis? Does that make sense? Maybe this is a dumb question. Anyway, I read about so many of you taking individual supplements and I wonder if I am lacking in these in my multi even if the label says I'm getting 100% DV? My doctor once told me that sometimes he doesn't recommend a daily multi especially if we are eating healthy. Well, I lack in that area, too. I need to eat better...and I need to stop rambling so I can post this! LOL!
Thanks, Ladies!

I do not think those are the exact amounts we need.If you want you can google the vitamin, example B-vitamins and find the maximum allowed doses.I did this with magnesium.I now take 500mg per day.GOD-bless

I think the daily value is based on getting a quality 2000 calorie diet. Most of us don't eat this much and when we do it isn't always quality. The best rule of thumb is how do you feel? I only take a Centrum vitamin even though I have B and B12 in the cupboard along with yeast cleanse, slo-iron, calcium, vit D, Co-Q10, and some others that I've forgotten. I just can't seem to stick to a regimin of taking all of those. But if I stop taking my multi-vitamin within 3 days I will begin to feel run down so I know I need some.

I only take a Centrum multi every day. I did take the Gnc Mega, but caused Mega side effects for me.

I take a multi that has some vit's over, or should I say, well over the RDA. Personally the more and more I learn and read, I think the RDA is outdated. I think the RDA should be changed to reflect, age, sex and age. Think about it, the RDA for a 90 pound 10 year old, is the same for a 200 pound 40 year old male... That for me is just proof that the RDA is behind on the times. Look at Vit D for example, they are finding more and more ppl dont have enough, and dr's suggest when that is the case to take 1,000 mg if not more... Now unless you know Vit D is low, I think 1,000 is alot, but hey I take 600mg per day....

I also believe you have to be careful w/vitamins that are not water soluble (sp), Vit C for example, if you take more than you body needs it is just expelled, but other fat soluble vitamins are handled differently.

My suggestion is find a good retailer, I personally like Whole Foods, cuz they have a huge selection. Also do a little research based upon your age and weight, there is alot of info out there... And if you can afford it, try to see if you can get your doctor to atleast check your vit d levels.

One final note, I truly believe, w/o a doubt, are food supply is not as good as it once was; meaning it does not have the same nutrient value that it had 50 years ago. You also look at all the other stuff, polution, and such, and our bodies are under alot more strain than ever before, and dang then add "stress" to the factor.

In time, I honestly think the RDA will come around, and unfortnuately in the meantime we need to do the best that we can. I also try to find the most natural supplements as possible, look at the so-called "other ingredients"...

Like I said, though certain vitamins you have to becareful of, ie, Niacin... But if you get a good reputable brand, you should be fine... I like extra C, D, and the B Vitamins myself....

Just make sure you take a multi that DOESN'T have iron. That's what I was told.

Hi!
I would suggest you to take a multi vitamin with a slow release formula. I take the Mega 100 slow release tablet from Ripple Creek. They also have a Mega B-Complex time release tablet. Make sure that you consult a physician before taking any form of health supplement.

I suggest using any good quality multi vitamin BUT avoid if it has meno or ladies written on the packet as all that seems to do is raise the price substantially. In the UK we have Seven Seas which a homeopathic doctor I used to see rated very highly inexpensive and good quality.

Do you know why?just curious, cause i've heard you should take one with iron, especially if you suffer from heavy periods.I've also heard that once you stop having periods, you should stop taking the ones with iron, casue the iron can build up in your body.

I think the thing to remember overall is that the RDA is a MINIMUM, not the absolute amount you should have. I agree that the RDA is somewhat outdated and the argument that it's the same for a 90 lb. 10 yr. old as it is for a 200 lb. 40 yr. old man is a valid one as well. Having said that, if you cannot eat 2,000 calories of high quality balanced food a day (who the heck can???) then you need to supplement somehow. If your body cannot tolerate anything but a multivitamin, then that's what you should take. But before I gave up on it I think I'd seek the advice of a licensed nutritionist on how I might be able to supplement my vitamin intake more specifically. He/She might have some suggestions. I know that when I started taking a multivitamin about a year ago I started feeling a little better but nothing to write home about. But when I started taking Vit. D3, B complex and Vit. E several months ago I almost immediately felt significantly better physically. It even helped my hot flashes! My skin is clearer, hair is thicker and grows faster, my nails are growing like crazy and my everpresent hip pain is much improved. They must be doing something!

I also feel I must question the advice given to one of the posters previously (sorry, can't remember who it was!). She said she'd been told not to take a multivitamin with iron. I'm not sure why that might be. In a later post it mentioned something about once you've stopped having periods the iron builds up in your system so you shouldn't take it. I'm sorry but I must disagree. If you take more than the RDA (there we go with that again! wink.gif ) then you could conceivably have a problem with that but otherwise it's not a problem. How many people in your lifetime have you ever heard with this issue? Many, many elderly folks out there (male AND female) are iron deficient because they don't have a good enough diet. Let's face it, most of us do not eat the recommended diet, either in quality or quantity and it doesn't get better as we age. Soooo, the bottom line is, unless you have been tested and it shows that you have way too much iron in your system don't worry about getting a little in your multivitamin.

If you still have your period and you're losing all that blood every month, you'll need to take a multi WITH iron. If you've stopped bleeding completely, you should take it without. Men's multis don't have iron. We women need to replenish the iron because we lose it when we bleed. I had a hysterectomy and so I was told not to take a multi with iron because I'd overdose on iron. The 'over 50' multis for women don't have iron in them for that reason.

There seems to be a correlation between high levels of heme (iron) and heart attack. There was a study done in Finland that illustrated that those with high levels of ferritin >200 mcg. per litre, were twice as likely to suffer a heart attack. I am sure more studies have been conducted but this is the one I recall. Vitamins for those over 50 do not contain iron for this reason.

My brother in law has hemochromatosis, which is a condition causing iron overload in the body. He has to donate blood monthly to keep his iron stores low and help reduce his risk of heart attack. Two much iron is also bad for the blood vessels.
