I've had osteoarthritis - the "wear and tear" kind for about 20 years, even though I was too young (where have we heard that before?).  This is a hard disease for a pianist/keyboardist.

Anyway, I broke down a few years ago when I couldn't stand the pain and stiffness any longer.  I tried a boatload of medications, most of which I was allergic to.

For the last several years, I've taken Tolmetin Sodium (generic for Tolectin).  Well, it stopped working.  The doctor gave me some Vioxx samples today.  I was a bit leary to take them because of my past history.  he said that even if I'm allergic to these, the break from the Tolmetin might "jumpstart" that so it works again.

I was desperate this morning.  I took the first of the Vioxx samples.  It didn't come with all those drug warnings which I always read.  I was in a hurry and didn't look it up, either.

I felt kind of woozy/drunkish some of the morning.  Anyone know if that's a possible side effect of this?  If it is, I'll try it at bedtime.

MaryO....not you too!!  *Sigh*

I've had osteoarthritis for years too....tried all kinds of stuff....the last was Vioxx!!   It was hard for me to tell if the med made matters worse with dizziness, etc. as I can be that way with the Meniere's Disease on a good day......however......having said that.....I didn't like Vioxx!!  It did nothing for my aches and pains....I tried it for 3-4 months.....then when I went to see my ear specialist....he took me off it!!  Said....it can cause inner ear problems....which I already had.Soooooo....if the inner ear can be affected....dizziness is the result!!  Question is....can it do it that quickly...after the first or so day????  Dunno!!Then I guess there's always the possibility of an allergic type reaction....or just sensitivity!!I know the med helps some people....I've talked to a few.....but I also know it hasn't!!Anyhow....hoped that helped a little!   Sure hate to see you hurting with this.....it's no fun at the best of times!!

Take care and hugs........

Dearest
Mary, I think Vioxx is one of those Cox 2 inhibitors like Celebrex. If you remember, I told you I tried Celebrex out of desperation and had a reaction similar to yours -- feeling "drugged" and "woozy." I perservered for three days until I couldn't take it any longer. I had similar problems years ago with an anti-inflammatory. The problem with many of those medications is that although they may help the arthritic/joint pain, they can cause all sorts of liver and stomach problems. Even the Advil I take, which often doesn't help very much, can cause liver problems as well.

Sorry you're having this, MaryO. As you know, I can relate too well - wish that weren't the case for either of us, but lately I've been wanting to literally tear my hair out from all the pain.

Hugs,

Dearest
Don't you have FM (Fibromyalgia), Nancy?
NancyV
Dearest,

There is a natural antiinflammatory my doctor recommended for pain when I had root canal work.  It might help with your arthritis and has no adverse side efffects and is an antioxidant.   It is a powdered form of pycnogenol....if you are interested in the name let me know.

I have had pain in my hip the last couple of days and I don't know what it is.   Might try my pcynogenol for that come to think of it....

Morning....Ladies!!Yes..I do have fibromyalgia too....soooo...that makes it so hard for me to know what to do!!

When I took Vioxx, ( for arthritis)...I was told it was very easy on the tummy,etc....but later found out it can cause inner ear damage with some people.  As far as the stomach is concerned....and liver, etc....IMHO....I think anything not natural....like Vioxx or Advil can be a problem!!  I've had so many problems with meds  (sensitivities) over the years....that I've become the suspicious type.  Also...if I'm not mistaken Vioxx is still fairly new on the market....a couple of years or so....at least in Canada!I just wish they would find a cure for all these aches and pains....sigh!!The whole thing can wear a person out!!(((Hugs)))

Sandy
I have noticed that my wrists have developed the carpal tunnel thing. This is aggravated whenever I lift heavy water buckets...

Lately the tingling sensation has gone more into pain. Yikes, now its tendonitis, all up my arms to my elbow!!

I went to my Health Food Store, and they told me that a cream called MSM will help.

WELL ladies, it actually worked. The tendonitis has gone away, the tingling has stopped.

And all this since yesterday.

I couldnt rest my arms as I typed yesterday. Too sore. Right now I am happily typing away....

I am going to give my Mom a nice big jar of MSM for Mothers Day. She is an avid golfer with sore muscles a lot of the time.

Snowbird
Hi...Sandy!!

I couldn't be more THRILLED for you to hear that MSM has WORKED!!  Since I have Fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis....carpal tunnel syndrome has been a nuisance (off and on)....plus....ohhhh... so much a big PLUS....that...TENDONITIS!!  In fact it's there now!  However...when that flares the only thing for me that works is an anti-inflamatory!  I'm taking Relafen 500mg.  Along with that...where the pain is most  prevalent I have to brace and wrap the limb!

I've tried MSM....wasted my money!!  Doesn't work for me....in fact it gave me a stomach ache!! *Sheesh*God love ya....if it works....I'm all for what works for those aches and pains!!(((Hugs)))

Sandy
Hi Nancy!!

This MSM is a cream that I rubbed on my aching tendonits.

Have you tried this stuff?????

SandyXXXXX

Snowbird
Yup....I've tried the rub....and just recently bought a bottle of  it in tab form from the health food store!!  No go!! *sigh*  Aaaaargh....I'm tired of spending my money on stuff that doesn't work!!   Oh well....there's always next week!! LOL!(((Hugs)))
RebMac
Hi folks,What exactly is MSM -- what is it suppose to do?  I am having a fair amount of joint pain especially in my fingers, wrists, and elbows.  How do I use the stuff?  Thanks

Reb

Snowbird
Reb...Hi!!MSM...is short for "Methyl Sulfonyl Methane."It comes in creams...powders...tabs.  It's a biologically organic form of sulfur....sometimes it's combined with Glucosamine.  The creams and rubs work quicker....the tabs and powders could take weeks.  When I bought MSM, I had forgotten that I'm allergic to sulfur.....sheesh!!  So in due time...the inevitable occured. If you don't have a problem with sulfur....it's suppose to be very good.....but it is expensive!!  It might be something you would be interested in....as I know some people swear by it!!!!!Hope that helped~~~~~~~~~~~~~Take care and hugs to ya my meno-bud;o)"Snowy"
Sandy
Hi RebMac:

The rub really has put me on the road to recovery. I also rubbed it over all my fingers and the palms of my hands, since they were hurting.

This was last nite.

Today much improved.

I've been rubbing it in every 4 hours or so today, as it says to use it "as often as required"

I feel a lot better today.

SandyXXXXX

RebMac
Hi Sandy, Snowbird,I am off to the health food store to purchase some ASAP.  I am willing to try almost anything right now.  Thanks for the advice.

Let Us Know How It Goes!!!  I always** LUV GOOD NEWS**(((Hugs from Snowy)))
Lori
Hey gals,I figured out how to do this posting business.  It's not so hard!!!  My mom told me about MSM and I forgot to get some.  I'll give it a try.  MaryO, Vioxx did nothing for me pain wise.  It made me dizzy and made my blood pressure go up.  It also makes my heart race more.  I'm so sorry your meds no longer work.  Vioxx can be taken in half dosage at first to see how it goes.  I didn't get dizzy when I cut it and increased after awhile.  Celebrex made me feel awful.  I would take it at bed just so you don't feel the full effects of it if you decide to continue.  Good luck, Lori
MaryO
Thanks, Lori.  This is the 3rd day of the Vioxx and it's not helping at all.  I think that I feel stiffer on it, if that's possible sad.gif  After that first day, I've taken it in the afternoon and have had fitful naps.  I'm afraid if I try it at night, I won't get good quality sleep.

I've also been itching for the last 2 days, but no hives.  I think that I'm not going to try much more of this.  I think that I gave it a kind of fair shot.

The itching is about too much for me to handle, though, coupled with the no help, worse stiffness and poor sleep.  I guess it's no wonder drug for me!

MaryO
Not that anyone asked , but this itching is driving me just beserk!  It's just like the first months of meno when all the ants were running and jumpting all over my body sad.gif

This, from a drug that was supposed to make me feel better, make my joints less stiff and painful.  it didn't do what it was supposed to, but brought all this other bad stuff instead.

NO FAIR!!!

Snowbird
MaryO....so sorry to hear you're not feel well)))))Sounds like you are allergic to the med....there's nothing worse than an itch that causes all this trouble!!  I HATE that myself!!  Please know that I'm feeling for you and will be looking for another post from you saying ,"All is Well....the itch is gone!!  All is well with MaryO!!"Darn meds....a gal doesn't know what to take anymore...when one is in pain!!  *SHEESH*You're in my thoughts Hon!  Keep me posted!!(((Hugs)))
RebMac
Hi Folks,This is my MSM report. . .   it seems to have helped the tingling in my fingers as well as the pain.  I was able to sleep pain-free last night.  This morning there is a small amount of tingling but it is MUCH improved over last week.  Hope tht others have positive rsults as well.

Sorry to read that your arthritis is flaring up again sad.gif  I went off the Vioxx on the 3rd or 4th day.  I couldn't stand the itching at all - and it lasted for several days after I went off.  The Vioxx didn't help a bit with the pain or the stiffness at all.  Maybe it would have, if I'd given it a longer chance, but I just couldn't manage with the itching.

As it turned out, the Saturday after I went off, we went to our CSA (Consumer Supported Agriculture) farm and I was in the henhouse getting some eggs.  A young male goat wandered in, too, and started eating all the hen's food.  Without thinking, I scooped him up and moved him out of the henhouse.  believe me, he didn't want to go!  Next day, my wrists started killing me, like my carpal tunnel was back in full force.  I don't know if it's from the goat, the non-meds for a week or maybe the Tolectin had been helping in ways that I didn't realize.

So, I've been wearing wrist braces for a little over a week now and I started back on the Tolectin Sunday night.  We'll see what happens.

Oh yes, I have this "point" on my right hip that sometimes hurts so much. It's often when I'm just lying in bed, that my hip starts throbbing away. That's bothering me right now, too.

Anyway, sorry to go on so long answering your post. sad.gif  I hope that you feel better soon, Snowbird!

Snowbird
Thanks for the response Mary  smile.gif

GOOD GOLLY!!  Aren't we a MESS!! Only kidding....sort of!! :wink:Hubby has carpel tunnel too....and he broke that same wrist last year!! Poor Guy!!  He's a suffering for sure!!  The Vioxx is NOT helping him....but he's giving it a try!!  He knows it did nothing for me!  Another interesting point.....the Vioxx also caused me to bloat, (retain water)!!  It has done that with a couple other people that I know....both men and women!!Larry's poor wrist is swollen.....at least he's on light duty at work!!  No more climbing poles for him!!   Use to be a "Linesman."Gosh!! Your hip must feel like a toothache!! Grrrrr!! I sometimes get lower back spasms.....then again, that's the fibro flaring up!!  When that happens I'm bedridden!!Appreciate your concern and kind words!!  Not everyone knows exactly what it's like unless they've been there!!

Take care my dear friend and God luv ya!! smile.gif(((Hugs)))

Hey Gals,Sorry to hear you are doing so badly.  I was locked out of part of the message boards.  Everything under cholesterol was blocked off.  I have a parental account and couldn't get in!!!  Took my internet server a fewwww days to get me fixed up here.  There is this stuff called bluestuff on an infomercial that sounds interesting.  My hubby keeps telling me to order some.  I think they have a website too by that name.  Can't remember what all is in it except aloe and emu oil.  I like that emu oil.  My chiro used to use it.  Now he uses an icy hot type of thing.  Doesn't work as well for me.  With all this technology can't we just get new bodies with no pain?LOL!  God bless and take care, Lori
Snowbird
HiYa....Lori!!

Dunno if it's the same.....but I have a bottle of bluestuff!!  I use it when I can! I sometimes LOVE the **icy sensation**.....ya know....like the "Peppermint Patty" thing! HeHe!  Problem is....it needs to be rubbed in....and there are days I can hardly hold the bottle let alone rub anything in!!  Now hubby is in bad shape to.....sooooo...can't get him to do a message!! :(Like ya said......"can't WE just all get new BODIES!!!!!!!!!"

Hi, I'm new and live in England.  Have had various menopause symptoms for several years and am disabled as a result of clapped out knees.  The 'change' has certainly done nothing to help the arthritis and other aches and pains and would welcome contact with anyone who might 'understand' and even offer advice.  Not yet sure if the medical/herbal stuff some of you talk about would be available here, such as MSM cream - I can but try.
Dixie Chick
I have been having pain with my wrist, no tingling or numbness just a slight  hurting when I pick up something . I am a cashier in a grocery store. Could this be  carpal tunnel syndrome?  Also could this be part of menopause? How should I treat this ?
IreneCrites
DixieChic....It could be Carpal Tunnel but wrist pain is also very common in menopause as is all joint pain. Are you taking anything to help the pain? There are alot of natural therapies that can be very helpful with no side effects. Keep posting and we will all help you.
Dixie Chick
Irene.... Thanks for your reply. I.ll be using a wrist band for about two weeks and a heating pad at night, also rubbing "Flexall". Wrist seems to feel better. What are some natural therapies for this problem?
Snowbird
Hi, Dixie Chick!!!My hubby has carpal tunnel syndrome!!  There is usually numbness, tingling and pain in the thumb, index and middle fingers that worsens at night!!If you suspect having it....I strongely suggest seeing a doctor to have it diagnosed as damage can be done to the nerve where it passes into the hand, which can actually cause the muscles to deteriorate.  My husband had to wear a brace for several weeks until it healed.HOWEVER, since you said there is no tingling or pain....it sounds more like what I have.....which is good ol' fashion arthritis!! ohmy.gif  I do what you do....wear a wrist brace, when necessary and put a rub of some sort on it.....like Flexall!!Take care and best of luck......pain is no fun!!

Hi Dixie Chick....Sorry to see you are having so muchpain with your wrist....As for myself I had this for months - from typing - was put off work for about 3 months - I found a good chiropractor and he helped nearly 100% - my wrist would swell up - but it doesn't play up now...all is good.Take Care Sister:)
IreneCrites
Hi Dixie Chick......If it is a touch of Osteoarthritis a natural supplement called Glucosamine will help. Also MSM is very effective. Both of these can be taken orally or in ointment form.  There is an ointment that contains "cayenne peppers" called Capsicum that can be purchased OTC in any pharmacy.  Moist heat would be better than an electric dry heating pad also. My specialist prescribed Extra Strength Aspirin for pain and glucosamine for long term treatment with Capsicum Cream as needed.  I have had much relief. I hope this info is helpful and that you are feeling better.
Mysassy
I had problems with the aches and pain with the arms wrists and knees. I tried everything nothing worked until I started using magnetic wrist bands and magnetic waist belt. Pain went away almost instantly! You should try this! When I hurt my shoulder I used the large magnetic pad on it and I got almost instant relief. Mysassy

Mysassy,

I have heard that the copper bands work.  For the past 2 years I suddenly have had aches and pains in my legs, knees, etc.  I suppose it has something to do w/this old meno thing.  Jeez!!!!

If I stay sitting too long in a position, I am very stiff and then it loosens up.

Go figure.

Joannaran
Boy, am I glad I read this one!  I've taken Vioxx for quite awhile now for some mild arthritis.  Vioxx helps the pain I have in my neck, but does nothing for my back or knees; good old Doans pills work wonders on my back, but wear off; nothing helps my knees, yet.

But...I had no clue Vioxx could cause itching!  I'm already the itchiest person I know, but it's gotten much worse the last year or so, that's how long I've been on Vioxx.  Time for a breather to find out!  You learn lots of things here!

Dearest
I've used the copper bracelets many times. Sometimes they help. Sometimes they don't. I've tried magnets, too. They did nothing for me. I have a friend whose mother swears by them for her arthritis. My 89 year old mother keeps telling me once menopause is over (even though I'm postmenopausal, technically, she reminds me I'm not finished with menopause and she speaks from a similar experience as mine) that this will all pass. The aching feet, legs, knees and even the arthritic pain is more severe during menopause. I'm stil waiting, but am not a very happy camper right now -- me, the one who should be cheering everyone up! sad.gif

Where is it written that you should be cheering everyone else up???

You gave us all this so that we could learn from each other, from the guests in the chats, from the rest of the website.  Sometimes, I even learn from myself as i'm posting something for someone else.

But I don't think that you should feel responsible for keeping all 1000 plus of us cheered up.

That being said...feel better soon, Dearest smile.gif

AnnS
Well said, Mary smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

Dearest.......you DO NOT have to be the one to cheer everyone up.........as Mary said, you gave us these boards, and anyone who is having a good day is here to cheer up anyone who isn't......and that includes YOU .....you can have bad days, too.........it's because you do that you started this site in the first place, so don't feel guilty about sharing your aches and pains with the rest of us.....we have big shoulders (perhaps not as big as yours, but we're all learning)!!!

Love and hugs :cheesy: Ann

IreneCrites
Dearest....Ditto to Mary and Ann.  You have a large family of woman here on Power Surge thanks to you so let us cheer you on sometimes. You know the ole saying "its better to give than to receive". Well we need to give back to you all that you've given to us. We need to return the compassion, love and strength you have unconditionally shared with us. So here we are and we are all praying for you to feel well. We all love you.....be well.Love Irene

Hi Girls:I know I have posted this before (not sure which thread).  I have the aching legs, but the muscles in my legs jump or twitch.  I thought it might be due to the Premarin I was taking, but I have been of of it for about 5 or 6 weeks now.  (It happens mostly when I am sitting or lying down). It could be coming from back surgery I had 16 months ago, but don't know.   Is this a meno symptom?  I know everyone is different, but this is really starting to scare me.  Please anybody, help me if you can.  Thanks and hugs.Ga Girl
Snowbird
Hi Ga Girl!!I caught your question on the other thread....but I didn't know you had just stopped taking Premarin!! Premarin caused my legs to twitch...BADLY:o:o

When I went off it....the twitching was worse...because of withdrawals from it!!  It took 2-3 months for the premarin to finally leave my system enough for my body to settle down....including the twitching!!It's really hard to say if it could be from back surgery at this time... cuz, the premarin could be masking or causing the problem!!

IMHO...if it's really that scary for you, it might be a good idea to see a doctor....just to make sure there's nothing else going on!!

I'm sure it's just the withdrawals from the premarin...but one can never be too careful;)

Let me know how things go for you!Take care:)

Hey snowbird -- I have a shoulder injury now too!  The left side.  Pulled it when I was trying to get the darn ivy out of the garden.  Could not believe the pain!  Think it's bursitis  (inflammation of the bursis).  I think also that I'm falling apart -- back, shoulder, teeth, (ugly haircut mad.gif) neck, knees, feet , bladder etc etc etc!  Think I'll take a two hour nap and see if I can get the ol' positive attitude back again.... :cheesy:Hi to everyone who is in pain today!    Lots of gentle hugs to you all.
Ga Girl
Thanks Snowbird.  I hope you are right.  Some days the muscle twitches are worse than others. I am beginning to think that some days my hormone level may be really bad which makes everything else worse. I went to a neurologist and he did strength tests and said he didn't think it was anything to worry about.  Well, he won't worry about it!  I don't think any doctor believes these crazy things are menopause related. It may be just withdrawals from Premarin and will take a month or longer to leave my system completely. Every day is a new day!Ga Girl

My pain has moved from my lowback to my shoulder to my upper back.  I'm ready to turn this body in on a newer model!  I don't even talk about it to anyone but you guys here.  Can only imagine what everyone says about my "constant" aches and pains.  Oh, ya, I do tell my husband.  He's so great about letting me know he still thinks I'm sexy in spite of my poor, stiff ol' body!  Well, tomorrow's another and hopefully a painfree day! How's everyone else here doing?  Snowy, are you feeling less achey ?  Gagirl, how are the muscle twitches? I've had those and they almost drove me crazy.  Don't know what I did to get rid of them.  Do calcium/magnesium supplements help?I'd love to know how everyone who's posted here is doing.  In the meantime, gentle hugs to you all!

Eileen, I so understand your frustration when you work so hard to be healthy and do the right things and this body does not cooperate. These aches and pains have been very tough to deal with.  Do you have fibro?  I have been told I do not and I guess these crazy hormones can have quite an effect on the bones and muscles themselves.Good luck and a pain free day to all of you.
